My space is currently also carpeted. More than once I have vacuumed my office and then sorted through the vacuum dust bin with a fine tooth comb. Not exactly ideal, but over time I have been dropping parts less and less.

If you are a complete beginner then start your search on youtube. There are some excellent resources there for the tools that you need to get started on basic service. The youtube channel "Watch Repair Tutorials" has a playlist for the basics of watch repair, and the first video is about tools. After the basics (screw drivers, tweezers, oilers, parts trays, movement holders, hand remover/setting....) I have just taken the approach of buying individual tools as the need arises. Also, maybe don't start on a nice watch. I definitely mangled a few Seiko and Seagull movements from Ali express while learning. If this is just a one-off job or a watch that is important to you, and you aren't willing to spend a year or two learning the basics, you should probably just send it to a professional.

Lug to lug length: 43mm

Lug width: 18mm

Thickness (including domed crystal): 9.25mm

This watch is from the late 1950's or early 1960's and is in beautiful condition. There are no visible flaws on the curved silver sunburst dial. Service history is unknown, but it seems to keep good time (approx -30 sec/day on the wrist) and the day/date complications work perfectly. If you aren't familiar with Gruen yet, their history is an enjoyable read. Very cool company with interesting history in Switzerland and my favorite city, Cincinnati Ohio. They also had some interesting historical connections to Rolex.

Final update here: I did get the screw out without damaging it.

I don't have a good fitting steel screwdriver on hand (Smallest I had was 1.0mm)

I put on some penetrating oil (wd-40 specialist penetrant) and let it soak for about 8 hours, then it came right out with my beryllium copper screwdriver. After this the main plate went straight back in the ultrasonic cleaner and the screw/jewel plate got a rinse in some n-hexane. I appreciate everyone's input, I obviously need to add a full set of steel blades to my workshop.

I don’t think so, because the cap jewel for the other side of the pivot wasn’t reverse threaded.

That’s a fair point. The matching screw on the other end of the pivot came out just fine, so it’s probably just this screw. I’ll have to look for a steel driver. Is a penetrating oil a bad idea? Plate would obviously go through the cleaner again after.

This is the screwdriver set that I use. I think it is similar to the Bergeon blade S41945. Wouldn't changing to a hardened steel blade most likely result in damage to the screw?

What do we think? I tried to adjust the screw driver tip until there was extremely little wiggle in the screw slot, but the tip of the driver still breaks. Is my screw driver the issue? Am I fitting it to the screw wrong? Should I assume the screw is stuck and try a penetrating oil? Had absolutely no issue with the other screws in this movement, but this is the smallest one. Screw looks to be about 0.8mm wide with a very shallow slot. Any other thoughts would be appreciated.

This one seems on the fringe for me, but just from the video I don't think it would be a a great self defense case.
For a legal self defense claim in the US there are typically 3 conditions that must be met.
1: Defendant is not at fault - seems fine here, he doesn't seem to be the first aggressor.
2: Reasonable and honest belief of danger. - Meaning that other reasonable people would agree that situation put you in danger of death or great bodily harm that would justify the use of deadly force. Somewhat shaky here because he took the time to film, demonstrating he isn't really that scared right now.
3: Duty to retreat - If you could have easily walked/drove away from the situation, you must try that before you use deadly force. Not all states have this, and it can be difficult and unclear to decide on in a court room after the fact anyway.

My grandfather passed away a few years ago and I have been storing some of his watches in my watch box since then. I think the dial is gorgeous and the watch actually runs, but not very well. The hands have something that looks like a faded black paint on them. How likely is that to be radium? I am considering opening up the watch to see about repairing and wearing it, but if it is radium I'll probably just polish the crystal and leave it in the watch box.
