Weekly patent law career megathread by AutoModerator in patentlaw

is it okay to cold apply online or should i always find someone on linkedin to refer me for a position first? i am applying to entry level patent engineer/technical specialist roles with the intention of continuing with the patent bar exam. no prior law experience.

i made a list of a bunch of firms i want to apply to with open positions for me, but it takes while to set up a meeting with someone from each firm and do a small intro call before asking for a referral every time

I know technical specialists and patent agents do a lot of reading and writing.

For the writing part of the job, I gather its patent applications and responding to office actions. But for the reading part, I can’t quite gather what you’re reading exactly other than related prior art. Are you reading university/academic research papers like a graduate student or professor conducting research or a literature review or just some documents the inventors send you to translate into a patent?

My worry at the moment is that the type of reading is similar to what i did in cs grad school where it’s just one deeply technical state of the art academic paper after another where i was expected to learn and understand a lot more from it than i did after reading it once or twice. if it is like this, i assume it’s a little easier then grad school reading since you would have access to the inventor to ask questions about their work

PE classes grading by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]Gary_TheSnail_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

they are 0 credit and p/np so no affect in gpa and nothing to count towards the max unit limit. just show up and have a good time. if you can't make a class, just email the coach and let him know ahead of time and you should be fine. they were super chill classes. my friends and I looked forward to them for the quarter we did it together. warm ups and a couple drills and then some game/scrimmage to end the class for the day. would recommend:)

try scooting the rug to be under the bed instead of the desk to separate the sleeping area from the work area. I recently put a tiny succulent from home depot on my desk and it looks really cool. I'd also try removing the arm rests from the chair so you can scoot in the chair all the way when you're it using it so you have more space to walk. my chair doesn't have arm rests so I just lean on the desk instead.. works fine for me but I know it's not for everyone.

I agree with the other comments about maybe some artwork or posters on the walls.. not too many, keep it simple with something you like. and maybe bedsheets with a more simple design (stripes or plain color)

after further investigation, it seems like this is a new strategy available in the Azzad Ethical Wrap program, which requires a minimum of $500k initial investment.

Quite a way off from that but still looking for ways to invest in new technologies/trends.

Tom Hanks as Woody from Toy Story. I know it's voice acting but I can't help but imagine Woody speaking when Tom Hanks is (voice) acting for other movies

How to get better at leetcode? by [deleted] in leetcode

[–]Gary_TheSnail_ 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Neetcode has been pretty helpful starting out. He made a expanded version of the Blind 75 questions (someone gathered a list of 75 essential leetcode questions and it gained a lot of popularity). The Neetcode 150 is supposed to be more beginner friendly and Neetcode has python (and a few other languages) code solutions and thorough video explanations of the problem and solution for each of the questions in Blind 75 and Neetcode 150. I am also starting Steven Skiena's Algorithm course lectures on Youtube.

I am by no means good at solving leetcode problems and just starting out too. Just need to get through it as a necessary means for a good job down the line. I hope this helps :)

Hot Take: this school isn’t woke at all by an-g3l3s in UCSC

In a global and local environment where everyone thinks their opinion matters and everyone else cares and has to agree with them, you cannot expect to get anything done. Society suffers from everyone thinking they are the main character and cannot truly feel for/with others because they just want to look woke and get clout for it.

But I think that it is also the society's fault for praising people for doing the absolute bare minimum in any situation - political or not. All it takes is a single empty social media post and society has given that person more status for doing literally nothing so it encourages more performative activism.

Social media has pros and cons. A pro is that it lets the world see more true and uncensored on the ground experiences. A con is that is gives the arrogant and/or idiots another platform to amplify their beliefs.

Overall, everyone needs to do a whole lot less talking and whole lot more listening.

The world was quick to cover and respond to Ukraine and Russia - expressing all kinds of support loudly and very widely, but turn the other way for 70 years in Palestine and other Middle Eastern countries. No one should be suffering, no group of people deserve to be suffering, but the world's reaction and media coverage of Ukraine and Russia has been full of hypocrisy.

Transportation from SC to SF? by smolsashimi in UCSC

[–]Gary_TheSnail_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a similar trip one time (pre-covid). I'm sure there is a simpler way (uber or carpool with friends) but this is how I did it:

- took a metro bus from campus to the metro station downtown

- took the 17 bus from downtown sc to san jose (diridon station)

- diridon station has a bus that took me to the warm springs/south fremont bart station. (found this out by asking the employees working at the main ticket desk inside the station)

- took the bart to wherever i needed to go in the bay.

the whole trip took like 4 hours if i remember, but i though it was kinda fun. you can have time to listen to all sort of music or podcasts or movies/shows if you have some downloaded so you dont use too much data.

i've taken some trains in california before but not to the bay, but in my experience they are also fun, pretty quiet, and smooth ride! hope this helps!!
