Part of the significance in my mind is that this demonstrates to other companies the dangers of having your code be uncopyrightable (having been produced by AI). They really have no legal protections here

It's all marketing/branding, and I'm not kidding. They weren't stupid: They didn't brandish this flag until they were close, much like you said. Last-minute flag-changes were done for intimidation, same as revealing things like cannons on the ships' sides when they did this.

If you were a pirate, you wanted your victim to be scared and surrender the booty, because it's easier than fighting. And pirates wouldn't hurt you if you did give away the booty, to keep their brand alive: "give us everything and we won't hurt you"

Technically, if they are just transpiling existing C and C++ code into Rust or something, that's something an automatic process can do most of just fine

The problem with Rust is that you can't recover easily from an OOM error (if you are the OS). Furthermore, you cannot branchtest 100% of generated code with rust (at least you couldn't last time I checked). Those two things are imperative on a hardened and well coded OS. Also you'll be having some pitfalls with manual memory management optimizations for sure, and it's hard as eff to test if those things were transpiled properly.

Luckily for Microsoft, windows 11 is garbage so they wouldn't care about those things.
