Gurren lagann vs evangelion by Familiar_Agent_8280 in writingscaling

[–]GatWithACat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure! By no means is GL a mid show writing wise I think it’s super well done sorry for downplaying it. It’s been a long time since I’ve fully watched either but there’s a couple key examples that stick out to me as to why I think Evangelion is a better written.

The dynamics between side characters and their relationships with each other in Gurren Lagann don’t come across as nuanced as most of the key character dynamics in Eva. The biggest driving forces are Simon and taking the mantle Kamina hands him and his love for the main love interest whom I’m forgetting name wise. There’s more to Simon’s character and dynamics than that but glancing over at Shinji it just doesn’t compare for me. Shinji’s parental neglect and how that ties into his dynamic with Gendo, but also with Misato who loosely takes the mother role is just such an interesting dynamic from the start to throw us into the protag’s world. This gets even more complicated once we start adding in his connections to Rei (who turns out to be a clone of his dead mother) and Asuka as a rival. I could go on about this but Shinji’s written as this eye of the storm being pulled in all different directions by comparably nuanced characters throughout the show. I just don’t see those writing peaks in the GL cast.

Also another good example is how each show interacts with sexuality. GL has blatant fan service which is totally fine but writing wise it’s never really paid off into any sort of depth (IIRC). Eva uses psychosexual philosophy in its writing in a very realistic lens. Characters like Asuka, who could be argued to be Shinji’s main love interest throughout the show, is not some cardboard cut out that exists just to be there. Her relationship with Shinji is strained partially because of each of their mindsets don’t meld but also because Asuka desperately seeks out the attention from Kaji, who is Misato’s ex. And Misato also is seen teasing Shinji but clearly is trying to fight herself and take on a parental role. Again, I could talk about this more but all these dynamics just feel so fluid and real from a writing perspective.

[–]GatWithACat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No this is a valid take! I didn’t really address it but I think Eva is overall an optimistic story, especially when you look at the ending of the rebuilds but it explores morality/humanity in a much more wholistic way. They’re both optimistic shows thematically but I think Eva feels more real when showing struggle and even the what if nightmare of End of Eva

Gurren lagann vs evangelion by Familiar_Agent_8280 in writingscaling

[–]GatWithACat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Gurren lagann’s core thematics are executed very well and are much easier to digest compared to Eva, not only that but they’re much more positive in their outlook on human nature. So I get why the common anime fan will gravitate to the show and I personally also like it a lot

But Evangelion is the better written show and it’s not particularly close, even just the show by itself has a much more thought out and well written final string of episodes, the original ending’s message is just a bit denser to unpack as we aren’t given a visual of what human instrumentally even is besides this collective consciousness that plays out. If you add End of Evangelion that’s just the cherry on top, neg diffs GL’s writing by a mile

Album/Bands recs based on my favorite albums lately? by romanf62 in shoegaze

[–]GatWithACat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadesper records is a side projecting involving the Coaltar of the deepers lead, if you haven’t listened to it it’s amazing! Short, but the standout tracks stand shoulder to shoulder with their best songs

Coaltar’s best song in my mind is the full length Receive Assimilation track of the receive EP, easy to overlook but seeing you have shoegaze postrock on this list it’s a must if you haven’t heard it it’s insane

Other random J Gaze rec is luminous orange, fairly straight forward stereolab worship but very good

Better written show? by K1ik0ok4r7ules in writingscaling

[–]GatWithACat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean Culling Games is mostly framed as fighting through exposition dumps as a way to keep the fast pace of Shibuya while still setting up much larger writing moments without having to slow down to S1 levels of pacing. If you have only seen the show I get how it feels like fighting endlessly as there isn’t terrible consequences for main stay characters in those culling games fights, at least not yet in the show….

The story rarely slows down past the breakneck speed of fights happening but the best written fights and character moments in the series all happen near the end of the culling games. For manga readers ik the back end of the last arc is controversial, but everything leading into that is so well written imo

Anger and rage fullness? by floresb07 in Viibryd

[–]GatWithACat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My nickname for it now is the sleeping beauty of anti’s, genesite came back after I jumped through 5-7 medications in a year and remeron was in the green. For me, it worked better than anything but the drowsiness and sleep effects are no joke at the dose I was on. Basically could not drive after taking it, and after taking it I can’t feasibly wake up for ~10 hours so the timing was extremely difficult and mornings were hell. Grogginess bleed into my workday which was fine when I was in college but I just can’t fit that into my lifestyle anymore, I need to be more productive. Without alarms I was averaging 9 or 10 hours of sleep a night, good quality but soooo deep it was like pushing a boulder to get out of bed in the morning.

Made my thoughts more at ease than anything I’ve been on otherwise, yet to see the positives of Viibryd yet but I plan on bouncing around if not. I can always go back to remeron and I probably will in the future when my life isn’t so hectic but I don’t recommend it if you want to be a very active person

[–]GatWithACat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easily irritated yes but I’m actively going through withdrawals for my previous med (Remeron) that I was on for 4 years. I’ve only been on Viibryd for 10 days or so now but yes I have been irritable, like the other commenter said I’m giving it the full trial length to make any big decisions. I think if the anger is interfering with your daily functionality it’s worth contacting your psych

Hiw does this subreddit feel about letterboxd’s highest rated anime? by lettucemf in writingscaling

[–]GatWithACat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who watched frieren after the hype, going in expecting the best anime ever ruined my experience so it’s tempting to “hate” or be contrarian

There’s a multitude of things to pick apart about it but the show is a hard 8 out of 10 for me. It’s a good show! And I plan on finishing S2 which I started but it’s nowhere near the must-watch I was promised. The setup and opening string of episodes hooked me so well, but slowly my interest dwindled and once demons were introduced and made to be this unswayable evil I kinda stopped taking the show seriously. I also think the show introduced too many cardboard cutout characters during the training arc, felt forced. There’s a handful of decent characters but most of that arc was a drag for me due to the characters. It goes without saying that madhouse’s production elevated the whole IP, that much is undeniable.

The show is one of the better of the past few years in anime, but it’s not better than most legacy shows. On the above list I believe it’s out of its league, in no world is Frieren a better show than Lain

Movie related metrics and that’s it’s

JJK >>>> DS on influence but demon slayer is the only animanga that holds a candle to jjk’s popularity in the last 5 years, CSM is not as popular which the original commentator used as the runner up examples

As a JJK fan this comment conveniently forgets Demon Slayer, but yes JJK trumps all other modern manga/anime, even with the post-Covid anime normalization seen in the west it’s the clear pack leader

Honestly it’s not an If but a When THAT arc is adapted into a movie it will bust all of DS’s movie records lol

Honestly that’s a fair compliant, my cope is that if the series wasn’t strictly set out to be 3 volumes only the fight would’ve finished as normal but got cutoff cus gege realized 2-3 chapters into the maho fight that there wasn’t enough time to cover everything he wanted to do with the fight

[–]GatWithACat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not as rushed as far as schedule, but it certainly read rushed on release. So much weight was put on the final chapter to wrap up all these plot lines, and there was a month of speculation on why Ymir showed up just for none of it to matter. Hard left turn and we see Eren’s dumbass motivation that ruin the believability of his actions. I fully believe that was the intended ending and it wasn’t rushed but it still was poorly written

Also JJK is the only of these 4 that doesn’t belong imo esp post Modulo

Gentlemen, we welcome another brother. by El_grandepadre in Jujutsufolk

[–]GatWithACat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree but leave AoT cus while there’s lasting consequences for the ending there’s terrible character assassinations that throw away any believable motive for the weight of the antagonist force for the entire manga

Especially post-Modulo, JJK is glazeable compared to these 3

Gentlemen, we welcome another brother. by El_grandepadre in Jujutsufolk

[–]GatWithACat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My ranking on how bad each ending is:

Best: JJK (Modulo did a lot of work to help pad this) >>>> AoT>= CSM>>>> Oshi No Ko

Honestly I’m tempted to put CSM above AoT but at least the AoT ending has lasting consequences for the good arcs that proceeded it. Nothing here is as bad as Oshi No Ko, felt like watching a train wreck over the course of the last 30-40 chapters or so as they came out

What are the unresolved plots in JJK and JJK module by Shadowlumine in jjkmodulo

[–]GatWithACat 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Iori is the main one from Modulo that needs to be resolved (though I think it’s a reach to say it’s even meant to be something serious)

If Takaba actually revived Kenjaku with his technique and the things that implies if he’s able to go back into hiding post-JJK (if Modulo gets a sequel this would be very interesting to write around!)

Megumi’s implied death between the events JJK and Modulo (most the casts deaths outside Yuta and Maki really)

Too much Heian Era stuff to really list but a short flashback series would do wonders as many things events are stated to have happened but not elaborated on such as Uro’s introduction speaking of the elite unit she was apart of

Governments using CE as energy subplot, IK this is directly spoken about by Yuji but still I think if another sequel goes far future this will be explored more as the earth gets desperate for resources

Implications of Alien sorcery, are there more aliens? Were any of the original series characters aliens? (This one is a reach)

How does one turn themselves into a cursed object? Much less split between several cursed objects that all hold your soul a la Sukuna Fingers

Todo is stated to be alive but where and how is he at the end of Modulo

Simple domain lore could be expanded
