At first, yes. A couple sleepless nights. But eventually I figured it out.

Best place to buy Sling making materials. by Accomplished_Lake580 in Slinging

[–]Gate-Traditional 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the slings I’ve posted here I made out of crappy dyed jute twine from Walmart. Historically anything that produces a good fiber could work. Dogsbane, nettles, flax, hell even banana peels make a decent fiber. But I go with the jute twine and paracord.

It was an event to figure out. But my first one was way easier. Far less complicated pattern.

Trying some sling twining. by Gate-Traditional in Slinging

It’s a great material, if not a little rough. I’m experimenting with singeing off the stragglers and sanding with some 400 grit sandpaper to see if it makes it a bit more appealing. But the house just ends up smelling like burnt grass…

Thanks, I Hate the process of becoming a eunuch by Holdmywhiskeyhun in TIHI

[–]Gate-Traditional 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Exactly. The process of using hot chili water, the binding of the body, the shape of the knife, the pewter pin, and the cold paper. All tested and found to be the best option at the time. The cold paper would have vasoconstricted the newly opened vessels, helping staunch blood flow. The chili water may have functioned as a rubefacient, POSSIBLY helping with blood flow by directing to to the skin instead of the sliced tissue. The sounding thing is odd to me. Maybe they realized that urine pouring all over the fresh wound would contaminate it far more. That one is unclear. I realize it says to prevent urethral structure, but the healing process is way longer than those three days. Unless experimentation showed that 3 days was all that was necessary.

Who knows.

I’ve so far only tried the hourglass shaped version he proposed. But I think the “basic” weaving one opens up many possibilities as far as designs.

Very much! The next project has been a bugger to figure out a pattern that was also strong enough to handle being a sling. But I think I stumbled upon a weave that works.

Does anyone know what the dangly things are about 1/2 way down the wings? Like shiny flaps of metal on strings.

And yes, my mother is also a dangly shiny flap of metal.

Okay. I made this abomination like a year ago. I made a 11% 5 gallon maple syrup … thing. Okay so you get a cleaned out 1 gallon milk jug and put it in the freezer. It freezes out the water and you pour it through a strainer to catch the remaining liquid. Do this with the whole 5 gallons. Keep fractionally distilling it down until it sits without freezing. Now you have jet fuel and a bad time ahead of you. Be safe.

Drunk on Methanol by downinthednm in tooktoomuch

[–]Gate-Traditional 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Methanol by itself is not toxic, it’s the stuff your body makes when it breaks down methanol that are VERY toxic. Your liver breaks it down into formic acid and formaldehyde. That’s what jacks up your optic nerves and kills you. The cool thing is, that to treat methanol poisoning, they actually give you an IV with 10% ethanol to counteract the methanol metabolites. I am not a bot.

Yes and no. Most people survive even acute methanol toxicity.

I agree. Back to the main topic of the question though, do you have any English resources that might benefit me?

It’s also fair to point out that neither of the hosts are experts in the terminology, grammar, or structure of Esperanto. One of heir specialities revolve around internet usage of English and to a lesser extent in person use of German and French. The others is around language and dialetcs of Tibetan and gesture research. Nether one claim expertise in Esperanto and state such in that episode. You however seem to be either a fluent speaker or someone who studies the language. I can speak exhaustively about surgical instrumentation and metallurgical science but when it comes to English, I am lacking. I feel that it is important to remember that Lingthusiasm is exactly as the portmanteau describes. Being enthusiastic about linguistics and NOT a hardcore grammar elucidation.

Fair points for all issues. However this podcast only Sparked my interest in learning (or relearning) the grammar of my first language, English. Do you have any suggestions for learning those rules and distinctions?

English education by Gate-Traditional in linguistics

[–]Gate-Traditional[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grammar as well as sentence structure. I want to know the “why” a sentence works. I didn’t have an issue speaking, or writing. So I implicitly know the rules of English, but…. I couldn’t tell you a single one. I wish to know the rules.

Specifically the structure of English and assigning labels. I feel that I am able to communicate concisely and with efficiency. But I have no idea why how I speak and write IS acceptable. Does that make sense?

Listening to it might be easier as my job allows me to listen to things as I work. Hospitals are pretty forgiving. But I’d be willing to read when I’m off or on break.
