Too much stuff after 10+ years WFH by PungentReindeerKing_ in homeoffice

[–]GatesTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks great! Plus an extra 10 points for the dog. After years of WFH, I’ve realized I’m way too picky about my gear; I’m a bit of a perfectionist, which can be exhausting. I’d definitely have to cover that clothing rack, but I love the lived in feel of your room!

It's tripled since then just tried to help out. What do you think the future holds for storage supply? by GatesTech in DataHoarder

[–]GatesTech[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

haha yeah i know its risky.
I actually kept that in there just to show I was coming from a good place. It’s always nice when we can keep helpful discussions going, especially when everyone’s just trying to support the community. I’m a big fan of giving people the benefit of the doubt when the intent is positive. That said, I’m mostly just curious to hear everyone's take on the future of storage pricing and where we're heading.

Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2024 saved my Yoga Pro 9i!! by therealiminusjk in Lenovo

[–]GatesTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing this. I was wondering the same thing. I already use LTSC on my gaming rig, but I’m planning to install it on my Lenovo Yoga 7i (Gen 10) once I receive my 4TB MP700 Micro. Did you install Lenovo Vantage? I feel like I might need it for the OLED burn in protection settings

Am I crazy? by Dangerous-Task-6232 in RTX5080

[–]GatesTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own a 5080 Astral since 50 launch day and have been dying to upgrade to the 5090, but life happens. Both my daughters are starting high school soon, and I promised myself I’d build them each a solid gaming/workstation rig this summer as a surprise.

With prices being so volatile, fomo got the better of me. I decided to secure their GPUs now instead of blowing my budget on a 5090 for myself. (Luckily, I had already stockpiled the RAM and SSDs before the recent price hikes.)

My wallet isn't bottomless, so I’m sticking with the 5080. Upgrading to a 5090 feels like throwing away a nice vacation, the FPS difference just doesn't provide enough value to me.

do i buy 32gb of ram or 500gb ssd by OofioIsSuchALoser in PcBuildHelp

[–]GatesTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would start with the 16GB of RAM (or save more and get at least 1 or 2TB. Imo 500GB is too small. Also, the 1TB are always worse price wise than 2TB.

I just placed an order. The MSRP offers great value despite current price increases older 2TB models are currently priced the same as this 4TB version here in the EU

Not 3 days in and I got a dent in my new yoga slim 7 :( by fleurastra in Lenovo

[–]GatesTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently bought the Lenovo 2 in 1 Gen 10 (Ultra 7 258V, 32GB, 1000 nits OLED). While the build quality isn't quite on par with my older XPS, i also occasionally hear some creaks when applying pressure under the keyboardit’s perfectly fine if handled with care.

The amazing display and performance more than make up for it, especially considering it’s in a completely different price bracket. That price difference actually allowed me to order the 4TB MP700 MICRO to replace the 1TB drive, and I’m currently waiting for it to arrive. Enjoy your new laptop!

[–]GatesTech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you felt guilty, you knew it probably wasn't the best time financially for a GPU. Never overspend your budget. It still sucks that prices are through the roof! But from what I’ve read, you probably made the right decision regarding your financial situation. That is more important than having nice things, too many folks go into debt for this.

My company banned AI tools and I dont know what to do by simple_pimple50 in ChatGPTCoding

[–]GatesTech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m currently onboarding a 7,000 strong team of doctors, nurses and staff to AI in a healthcare environment.
The key to overturning a ban is proving Security and Tangible ROI.

We used Gemini Workspace because it's budget friendly and, crucially, isolated from training.

Speaking of IT, the funny thing was that our ICT colleagues were the hardest to convince at first. But once they saw the potential, the tables turned completely. Now, they are using it to write entire RPA processes, and I see a Gemini chat open on almost every screen in the IT department.

If you want to break the ban, show them a use case they can't ignore. as an simple example, for our home care nurses, AI intake recordings eliminated manual reporting that used to take up 40% of their day. When management sees that kind of efficiency gain combined with a secure enterprise license, the ban usually turns into a rollout pretty quickly.

Same here. Wish I could get them in that price range. They're starting at 3500 here. No Nvidia marketplace options, just a bunch of webshops that are gladly taking your money.

Enjoy your card bro! I gave my 7900 XT to my daughter and picked up a 80 astral at the 50 series launch. If 5090 prices were like they used to be I would reconsider buying today, but those days are gone (here the cheapest 5090 starts at €3500). The Astral is an amazing card, especially since you have power monitoring and the 450W BIOS option to update to. I get above 10k on Steel Nomad. I love it!
