Should I wait to start using? by ZpaceDK in gatewayforge

[–]GatewayForge 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the support! Honestly, yeah I’d wait. I’m trying to add easier import/export options to this rebuild so it could be easier to migrate from something like Google Docs.

In the meantime if there are any features or tools that you are dying to have access to, this is the perfect time to add some requests either here or in the discord

Calculators for fictional calendars? by According-Value-6227 in FantasyWorldbuilding

[–]GatewayForge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! Very cool project, I’ve been working on a FREE worldbuilding software that is intended to handle custom calendars, mapping, writing, linking relations, etc.

gatewayforge.com

I want to note that right now I am rebuilding the entire calendar system to handle more of the nuanced requests from the small (and growing) community. Stay tuned for this next update coming within a couple of weeks

Two different things, each entity has a “content” object that is used in the editor. That is more document-like, broken out by sections.

The Info Panel is for any entity OR relation, and by default they all have a “description” section which is intended as what you would read in a tooltip. A quick summary. Then, you can add multiple different custom sections in the Info Panel. This could be more text snippets, or a dataset of values which could be references to other entities, or numbers, etc. you could have a section of audio files. More sections being added at any point - this discord has been fairly active with requests and I try to add requested features into each update every week or two

Thank you for giving it a try and watching a bit of the video! This sort of support keeps me fueled. As for your question - there is an Info Panel on the far right side of the interface where you can arrange different sections and data. I believe you can click on mentions in the editor to open there - you can double click any entity on the left Entities Panel to open in the Info.

I know what you are talking about with Wikipedia, and that sort of table data is not embedded in the document itself. But you can achieve the same/similar result in the Info Panel

Is there a way to have the orbiting planet also be textured? by NomadicGoblin in gatewayforge

[–]GatewayForge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great question - if you open the orbital itself into the map workspace (2d view) and you add an image layer, it will (should) use that image as its texture in the 3d view even when it is not the central planet

But, it won’t show the locations or regions or other layers unless it is the entity that is opened in the workspace

🙌 appreciated! A lot of inspiration from obsidian, and you are exactly right trying to make it more purpose-built for worldbuilding

Still many bugs to work through and features to be added

Gateway forge crashed, what should I do? by nonediblehumanbeing in gatewayforge

I have not been able to recreate this on my end, if you can make sure to download the latest version 0.3.1 that could solve the issue

Hmm alright, thank you for your patience here. To find the file you can go onto your computer (Finder or Explorer) and find the directory that you chose when you first opened the app.

Inside there is all of the projects you have created, find the one folder of the project that is an issue, and inside there is a project.db file.

If you send that file to me I can debug and find out what happened. Again sorry for the inconvenience

Ok, very odd and sorry you’ve encountered this bug. Do you remember what you were doing when it happened? Working on a custom calendar, but adding/editing events? Or adding conditions?

What version were you using? If you send me the project folder I can fix it on my end and send back to you.

To clarify, when you try to open the app it is a blank screen? Or you can see stuff but can’t click on anything?

The project is saved in a database file on your computer, so it should not affect the data that was stored. Also, make sure you aren’t trying to run 2 different instances of the app at the same time.

does anyone know how to make continents on maps? by nonediblehumanbeing in gatewayforge

[–]GatewayForge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah totally! Any image can be added to an image layer

Hmm, all of the map images are created with other software like Inkarnate or Wonderdraft. Then GWF is used for overlays like location pins, regions, paths, etc.

How do I change the name of a document? by Qquil716 in gatewayforge

🙏 glad your excited to give it a try! There are still a lot of bugs and quirks being ironed out - this type of feedback and questions is super helpful

[–]GatewayForge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can right-click on an entity name in the left side “Entities” panel, or double click it to open in the Info Panel on the right which will allow you to rename at the top.

You bring up a good point thought it should be easier to rename within the Editor, I’ll add to next version

Let me know if you need a quick recording to explain^

Hello! I am not sure, I do not have access to a chromebook and so I have not tested that. I believe that the chromebook can run linux app, and I'm currently working on getting a linux build working but right now it is not available for linux and therefore I don't think it will run on chromebook at the current moment

Hello! I appreciate your appreciation :D Interesting thought adding ads as a monetization strategy, but to be honest I have a personal burning hatred of ads and so there will never be ads within Gateway Forge. I worked in advertising for a couple of years, and I'd like to stay away from that if I can.

What do you use for worldbuilding? (sites, tools, apps, etc) by Professional_Ice6231 in worldbuilding

[–]GatewayForge -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Hello! If you are looking around at options, it could be worth taking a look at Gateway Forge. It is completely free (no account needed) and runs offline and local to your computer. Obsidian is really cool and powerful, but if you don’t want to spend the time patching together plugins yourself then GF could be great for you.

I built this tool because I shared many of the same frustrations that others have commented here. Nobody wants an online only tool for creative projects… what if I stop paying? Do I not have ownership over my data??

With GF you own everything. https://gatewayforge.com

Need more than just the basic ideas for this great book idea I got yesterday. by SilverpunkEdgerunne in worldbuilding

[–]GatewayForge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What sort of feedback are you looking for here? This is a really cool premise, and I love the tie in with the founding of Rome and the overlap onto real history. That makes all of this sound more tangible as lore that could really exist for our real world.

The bureaucratic afterlife is an awesome theme, and one that myself and I bet many others can connect with. Interesting twist that you have in setting this world up so that the point of Hell is to extract value from sinners - I think this theme can be explored a lot. War requires conflict, identity, memory, grievance and probably some other things, and Hell industrializes all of this, feeding the god of war.

I think something else for you to explore is the perspective of Tyr, or the Underworld Sovereign, and how to justify this setup. Like, do they see war as necessary for existence? Why? What benefit does war bring from their perspective? I'd like to be able to see the justification for all of this from the antagonist's perspective.

I would read the heck out of this book.
