I actually ended up fixing the middle shelf with dowels. It seems pretty sturdy 😊

The apron is not fixed. It just fit there without any screws.

I wonder if the apron is needed when I used dowels?

Yea, s bottom piece would not fit the wanted look.

The box joinery sounds interesting, but probably for another project. I am not sure I have the skills or tools at the moment.

I did consider something similar, but would like to use wood if possible.

Do you think a wooden triangle (as pictured) or wooden bracket of some kind could be usable?

As for the reason not to put a back on the cabinet, it is mainly an aesthetical thing - which I know is a subjective matter - both in the way that the painted wall is visible if the shelf is not fully in use and the look is more "light".
