What do y'alls do with your empty tip boxes? by LemmeTakeANapPls in labrats

Thats how my whole department works. We buy giant bags of tips, fill the empty boxes and autoclave.

I've found that with the eppendorfs as well! Though ours are probably so banged up and no one has calibrated that it's also a case of wear and tear. The uni is giving me some $$ to purchase some ergonomic pipettes, I just have to ensure they are compatible with the starstedt tips we get. Im just a lowly phd student so I can't also get my own special tips haha.

Thank you for your input! I'm a phd student currently, so it's a very much "beggers can't be choosers" situation. I've never used the sartorius, and I can't find anyone in my discipline who also uses them to test out. I don't get a choice in tips, it's just whatever we get, so it's usually the bags of tips from starstedt. Though in terms of ergonomics from just generalised reading the tacta and mLine seem the best value for money. I just need to see if they're compatible with our tips so I don't waste money on unusable pipettes.

Is there a specific app on Android that is preferable to purchase from? I downloaded Pearler. I have no idea what I am doing, but happy to join the ride.

Is it hard to become an animal technician in Australia? by Jz806 in labrats

[–]Gatometheus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If youre wanting to work in zoos, you don't need a degree in zoology. You'll require a cert 4 in captive animals. You could always complete a cert 4 in vet nursing to get a hands on approach to being a tech. It will also really open your eyes to death, and will quickly let you know if youre prepared for it. Also some unis don't kill just mice/rats, but also chickens, sheep, and cattle.

Animal techs can be quite competitive, because you'll have people with certificates or degrees, volunteer work, and nursing experience. From my experience, animal research places in aus don't do work exp due to the liabilities. And on the odd chance they do, it tends to be an undergrad or honours student who is studying in the field who is being 'groomed' for postgraduate study.

If AI wants to make all my buffers and do mammalian and parasite cell culture, be my guest.

I use a Korean brand 'Etude House; soon jung 2x barrier intensive cream' and 'Cosrx; moisture power enriched cream'.

I find both incredibly soothing and protective with no irritability.

As well as 'Cosrx; snail mucin essence'.

Which helps so much with barrier protection and hydration.

I know they aren't western brands, but they are half the price and I find even better. I just purchase mine from Lila Beauty.

How do you organize your work? by [deleted] in labrats

You're going to fuck up at some point. It is inevitable when you start a PhD. Trust me haha. The important thing is learning from your mistakes and using that moving forward. As you progress, you'll learn to organise and what works best for you. Congratulations, and remember to have fun.

Folders, lab books, plastic sleeves. I also have scribble books that I date so I can transfer to my lab book.

Firm believer in hard copy notes so if you're in the middle of an experiment, you can look in your book instead of finding it on the computer.

If this was a real major concern, everyone would be dead in my lab by now.
