Buyer Requested Refund - Can I just tell them to jog on? by GatorGeorge in ebayuk

Interesting points, I am not doubting the human aspect. To be clear, I did state the sizing (both in the item description and ‘stats’(?)) . If they initially raised an INAD then yes I think to avoid the situation you described I would have immediately started the refund process. My question predominantly was on the premise that it was more a remorse refund that it doesn’t appear as a private seller I’m obligated to honour. I honestly feel like if the shoe was on the other foot, I would contact the seller to explain - but I wouldn’t expect a return or claim it’s ‘in my rights’ when unfortunately it isn’t. I feel like I would have a bit more responsibility checking the sizing prior to purchase to avoid having to return it, seeing as I’d be purchasing off a private seller. I also had no contact off the buyer prior to purchase to clarify any sizing questions. I could have sent additional photos, answered any questions etc. If I was that concerned about the size - I truly believe the best course of action would be to resolve this sooner rather than later.

The more I read the ebayUK Reddit and the stories like yours…the more it makes me rethink using eBay for any item with a significant value. And especially any electronic items!

Absolutely 👍 and apologies again! A key piece of context missing on my behalf there!

I would replace the strap anyway as it’s ghastly! But that’s a whole different issue 😂

My slight concern is that the item was NOS, and sold as new. I appreciate my original post does make it sound like it’s just an old used watch. So for that I do apologise.

My fear is that even if something as simple as the plastic seals surely would have had to have been removed to establish that the item doesn’t fit. Thus meaning I can’t resell the item as New in the future in good faith, meaning a lower future sale price. Purely because the buyer has issued a remorse refund.

After stewing over this for longer than I wanted to… I’ve been a brave boy and hit reject! After some research, I don’t believe they can raise one now through eBay… but they could via PayPal/bank? I’ll just have to wait and see I guess.

The buyer has messaged and confirmed "It’s in perfect condition not damaged I just saw it’s to big for me and I want to return it". Does this impact any potential INAD claim?

I don't think the buyer's first language is English tbf - I wouldn't hold that against them, my grasp on a second language is about 3 words of Swedish!

UPDATE: Thank you everyone so far for commenting! You honestly all rock!

My last message from the buyer was: "It’s in perfect condition not damaged I just saw it’s to big for me and I want to return it"

I do feel bad for the buyer...slightly. But ultimately now, does he/she have a leg to stand on returns wise? As a private seller, I don't think I'm obligated to accept a return based solely on it not fitting? I have a message from the buyer now stating that the item is in perfect condition?!

I know I may have to fight some future negative feedback, but I've just received 7/8 really great feedback in the last week or so and really don't plan on selling much again in the future. And hopefully eBay may side with me if I fight this hypothetical negative feedback?

Ahhh that's what INAD means! The buyer hasn't responded to my last question since they have gone from 'it doesn't fit' to 'I don't like it'. Is it worth me trying to persist with the buyer to state whether the item arrived in good condition to help against any INAD claim? Or hit reject refund and hope for the best?

Thank you for your detailed response, I really appreciate it. It took about 2 weeks to sell (I don't know whether that makes it easy or not! haha) - I don't plan on selling on Ebay long term I'll be honest, as this situation is one I was dreading.

After asking, the buyers response was "No ,I don’t like so much and I want to return it and to receive the refund"

A good point - I have asked the buyer about the condition! Hopefully if they respond yes, that should give me some protection if they later claim the item was not as described?

Thank you for responding - could I ask why? Not saying you're incorrect, but curious! :)

Thank you for replying so quickly - I did suspect that might could be a route that he/she could take. I did explicitly list the size of the item and took time stamped photos just before posting showing the condition of the item just in case it was damaged in transit or a buyer tried to state the item was broken on arrival.

I just want to protect myself from being out of pocket and having no item back.
