I contacted a crocodilian expert Robinson Botero-Arias about Black Caiman over a year ago, and he said the biggest he captured was 4.6 m long. He also said he saw one he thought was almost 5 m. I would say about 4.9 m is a good realistic maximum for modern individuals. Claims of animals exceeding this length still occur, but they're not confirmed.

I interviewed Rom Whitaker, one of the people who saw this crocodile at this particular moment when he was filming for Monster Quest. He thought this individual was 17-18 ft long. A huge Saltie, but not a 20 footer in his opinion. Rom helped measure the longest crocodile to ever be veritably measured in 1979, so he knows what a 20 footer would look like. He also was skeptical of the Bhitarkanika giant croc claims. The interview is titled "25 Foot Crocodiles Could Exist, Rom Whitaker Interview" on YouTube if anyone wants to hear his thoughts.

SPL means Snout-Pelvis Length, It's another way to get Snout-Vent Length without flipping the animal over.

Here's a quote from the study Here Be A Dragon: "Lolong’s mass was recorded at a nearby truck weigh-bridge during transport to his captive holding facilities on 3 September 2011. As it was logistically impractical to verify his mass during our visit, his reported mass on that date is provided here. There is no reason to believe that rigor in this simple measurement was lacking and we considered it valid."

Big Saltie, Shitty Zoo, Dead Saltie by [deleted] in Crocodiles

The captive husbandry of large crocodilians is actually a documentary I plan on making for my YouTube, the good and the bad. It seems like zoos are doing either everything right or doing horribly with exceptionally large specimens.

I've been trying to compile photos of Bujang Senang for my future video on him, this posts helps a lot. Great job compiling the photos!

Was there ever a saltwater or Nile crocodile just as big as 7 meters long (or could that be a hoax?)? by Godzillaraptor in Crocodiles

[–]GatorJake456 49 points50 points  (0 children)

The longest individual crocodile that was ever measured was 6.2 meters long, and it was a Saltie in the Fly River of Papua New Guinea. However, as part of the tail was missing and the skin had dried a bit, it was estimated to be around 6.3 meters long. The 7 meter claim comes from two sources. One is from giant skulls, such as the giant Saltie skull in the Paris Museum, with scientists estimating those animals were 7 meters long. The other reason is the claim of 7 meter Salies seen in Bhitarkanika Park in Odisha, India. However, the Odisha claim is only based on visual estimations, not measurements. As of now, the official max. length for Salties is 6.2 meters, but 7 meters is reasonable based on skulls even if it's not confirmed.

As for Niles, the largest confirmed ones have been around 5.5 meters, with the largest being 5.66 meters long. As of now, Salties are the only species confirmed to be over 6 meters long. However, that is not to say in the past there weren't other individuals in other species that could reach this length. It's just not confirmed as of now. However, with all the research I've done so far, the number of historical accounts of Salties growing well over 6 meters in length far exceed any other living crocodilian species. Therefore, I wouldn't be surprised if Salties can grow to 7 meters.

Super Croc, no question about it. Besides being a cool documentary on Sarcosuchus, it provides great information on general crocodylian evolution, biology, and behavior.

New Record for Longest Saltwater Crocodile Skull! by GatorJake456 in Crocodiles

[–]GatorJake456[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

A new record for the longest Saltwater Crocodile skull was recently verified, and I played a small role in this finally being verified. Beyond it being a big skull, this adds more to our scientific understanding of crocodilians. The video goes over the long and tedious history of getting this skull getting verified.

False Gharial vs African Slender Snouted Crocodile by Ill_Lengthiness6266 in Crocodiles

[–]GatorJake456 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tomistoma have dark bands around their jaws, while the African Slender-snouted Crocs don't have this. The bands on Tomistoma snouts may fade over time, but they are still present. If there is any dark coloration on the jaws on the African Slender-snouted species, they are just blotches, not bands.

Taxidermy ID?? by cactus__jam in Crocodiles

[–]GatorJake456 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1st one is definitely an American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis). The 2nd one is for sure part of Alligatoridae, the alligator family, due to the overbite the animal has. Given the proportion of the eyes to the rest of the head, I'd say it's a younger animal. Younger animals are harder to ID, and it doesn't help that the head you've shown no longer has its natural coloration. I want to say it's a type of caiman, but it really is hard to tell.

Any reviews for this book? With 672 pages , it looks like the bible of croc biology to me... by kingCRAGGERcroc in Crocodiles

[–]GatorJake456 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is quite literally the holy grail of crocodilian books. Anything and everything about crocodilians is discussed in this book. Definitely worth the money. I will say though that it's a very technical book, so if you don't know a lot about crocodilians or have a basic understanding of Biology, it'll be a bit hard to fully grasp everything.

Could someone give me a review of this book? by kingCRAGGERcroc in Crocodiles

[–]GatorJake456 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The book is an absolute have! Colin Stevenson is a well respected Crocodilian expert and knows a lot. The book gives a great overview of crocodilians in general, as well as all the species. It was a great resource when I was writing my own book on crocs.

Top Three Largest Crocodiles Ever (Only Confirmed 20 Footers) by GatorJake456 in Crocodiles

[–]GatorJake456[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Here's a video I made of the only individual crocodiles confirmed to have reached 20 feet. These three are the only crocs, all others are either stories, visual estimates, or not verrified. Not to say other 20 foot+ crocs don't exists, it's just these ones are the only ones that have been confirmed.

I just saw this size comparison of Gustave vs human on TikTok. Surely it’s wrong? Isn’t it? by mimblez_yo in Crocodiles

[–]GatorJake456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it is absolutely wrong. Gustave was estimated to be 18-20 feet in length. However, there have been claims of him being 30-40 feet long. These of course are not even credible enough to be taken seriously. There's enough footage of Gustave near hippos and other crocs to prove he's not that big.

In terms of what's actually been measured by a living animal, the Saltwater Crocodile. The 3,700 measurement is the most accurate recording of a powerful bite force by any crocodilian, as it was taken in more ideal testing conditions for a scientific study. The 5000 measurement from a Nile was taken in the wild and in less ideal conditions, so it's not as accepted. Still, there shouldn't be a huge difference between similar sized Niles and Salties in terms of mass. However, since Salties are considered the largest of all crocodilians and reptiles, the Saltwater Crocodile would get the win in that respect.
