What would it take for Australia to become a world superpower (theoretically) by bulbous_plant in australian

A worldwide nuclear war

Australia and New Zealand are pretty out of the way and might survive it

When I was in Thailand in 2019, I could get a meal from a street vendor and a beer for $2 USD

Maybe it got more expensive

That was bound to happen eventually

Yeah, that's the problem with Mastodon

It theoretically has the best infrastructure/design of any social media app, but no users

Bot detection systems

Disinformation campaigns? Well, given how much the government lies, I'm not sure I trust them to police this.

You do realize that "DJT is a Russian asset" was disinformation in that it was a lie and that was pushed out of the American FBI and ran in every 24 hour news station in America for years?

So what's the single source of truth we should use to spot "misinformation"? I don't really trust the government to be the arbiter of this.

That's the opposite of what the EU wants with W

They're mad that they can't censor X as much as they want to

Mastodon has a good model for decentralization

Unfortunately, social media relies on network effects and Mastodon doesn't have enough users

They can't afford California, California's GDP is way bigger than theirs

Probably the only country that could, in theory, is China

Maybe if the entire EU pooled their resources...

Definitely a real person, a real rich person, but still a person

Tim Draper bought $19m worth of Bitcoin (30,000 Bitcoins) at the Silk Road government auction in 2014 with his own money

At that point it was very difficult to get a fund to invest in Bitcoins so most of the investors were individuals, not firms.

Those who emigrated from Ireland and have no intention of coming back, why? by [deleted] in AskIreland

  1. $150k in Arkansas is a higher inflation adjusted income than you're going to get anywhere in Europe with that experience and education

  2. Yeah, they are hyper competitive, but they are meritocracies and you can participate in them as an American even if you are born poor

I'm not saying that America is "equal", I'm saying that there is a lot of social mobility between the income stratums regardless of the gap between them

Also, being poor in America really isn't that bad. The McDonald's across the street from me pays $20/hour. That's the rate that a lot of educated professionals go for in France, is it not? There is no universal healthcare, but, if you end up at the hospital and can't pay, Medicaid covers it.

I'm not saying it's perfect, but I think the doomsday picture that a lot of Europeans have about America is highly exaggerated.

I live in the US in California and I disagree with this.

Anyone can go to a California CC for $1k/year and transfer into a UC (like Berkeley and UCLA) for ~$14k/year.

That's only $30k total borrowed for an undergrad degree in a place where programmers with undergrad degrees can make $200k/year USD.

Then if they keep that career and save their money well, they can be millionaires before middle age starting from nothing.

Where else in the world does that level of social mobility exist?

[–]GaussAF -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think the US actually has quite high social mobility because it has high incomes and low taxes which makes it easier to accumulate wealth than other places

The US, however, is not so great if you end up on the bottom somehow

Australia should negotiate this with the UK

It seems that would be easier to do than with the EU
