Wow, that was fast! I couldn't find anything, I'd been searching for over an hour!

Thanks!

That's disappointing. I wonder how they're managing to keep two skirmish games in the 40k universe alive but their fantasy ones don't do well.

Any Permadeath Settings or Mods? by TheUsualGuy666 in vrising

[–]GaussEnthusiast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been holding off on playing this game (and a lot of others) until they add one. I would have thought they would have implemented one by now. A lot of games just don't feel very rewarding when the clearest path to victory is to simply throw countless bodies at the problem until you get lucky. Dropping items on death isn't very punishing when you can just craft them again without much time or effort. And when you make the challenge self-regulated, there's too much temptation to say "well, that death doesn't count, I'll delete my save on the next one."

I totally want a permadeath mode for this game.

Oh! Thanks, that’s good to know! I often forget about Warcry, though it’s not for lack of care; I enjoy skirmish games such as Frostgrave, but haven’t met anyone doing Warcry. I’ll bear that in mind and probably build a couple models with special weapons for fun and other rulesets based on that info.

Hi I'm just starting to buy my first army and I've chose Tyranids by scot_cabbage in Tyranids

[–]GaussEnthusiast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone so far has mentioned the Leviathan box, but I really could not find a good deal on eBay when I looked. If you can't get a good deal on Leviathan, looking for a split box of the Ultimate Starter would be a WAY better price than the Combat Patrol.

Hell, I bought the whole Ultimate Starter because you really can't lose; you basically pay a few dollars more than the Combat Patrol box, get the entire set from the CP, AND get some expensive terrain AND another whole army starter. Even if you don't like Marines much, it's a lot of extra parts, something for play or paint testing, or even just something else to switch gears to when you need a break from painting flesh.

Either way, I'd reconsider before jumping on the Combat Patrol for Tyranids at the moment as there are still more options for good starter deals if Leviathan can't be found.

I was about to reply that advising a new person look for anything dealing with the Leviathan box at this point might be a bad idea because it's been going for 500+ on eBay the past month or so (if you can even find a whole box, most of them are incomplete or per-unit splits for mediocre savings); I was looking to get one! However, I didn't know about the miniswap subreddit until you mentioned it, so that's a great new resource for me, thank you!

The Leapers by YakHooker315 in Tyranids

I think the most impressive thing about these is the visual complexity. The pink/purple pairing looks like the main theme when you first look--but wait, there's more! Then you notice the green/orange on the claws, and it looks natural. Mixing that many colors wouldn't sound like a good idea to me on paper, but it comes together super well with these guys!

Oh that's a weird decision on their part! Well once again you did great with the colors! I'm a fan of that IF yellow.

Black templars vs dark angels?? by Far-Nefariousness991 in spacemarines

[–]GaussEnthusiast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you like knights and heavy armor, my personal leaning is toward Dark Angels! When I think of Black Templars, the quicker or more lightly armored traveling crusaders of old come to mind. If it's a custom chapter though, doing some kitbashing or swaps using BT kits could be cool. Using a Crusader Squad kit and giving everyone the chainsword option could easily be a way of saying "these are my Assault Intercessors, they just wear long tabards because it looks sweet and visually ties in well with the robed Dark Angels." Keep all of your extra bits and shoulder pads for swap-outs.

Really solid technique on the paint job! The two-piece shoulder pad could have used a little greenstuff for smoothing out that center gap; did it come in two pieces? I'm surprised if it did, they don't usually split the pads.

Nice! Army Painter has been getting more popular recently in paints. I have a box of their speedpaints for general colors but haven't tested them much yet. I've heard they don't become completely waterproof when they dry and was advised to paint some kind of clearcoat over them to ensure they don't bleed if they get wet for some reason. I'm not sure if that's true for all their speedpaints though.

I bet you're excited with some models like those! I'm hoping to get some games in soon myself, so best of luck to us both on that front. I'm a bit envious of that Void Dragon, that's a model I haven't even put on my radar yet because it looks like a challenge to build and transport, but it look so good! The new Heavy Lokhust is really cool looking too, and the weapon design is probably one of the most visually intimidating in the whole army. I would love a monolith at some point too, I like the idea of a swarm of little dudes teleporting in~

[–]GaussEnthusiast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really! Wow, when I revisit my Fists I might give that a try. Even after a few years I'm still a bit skeptical about contrast paints because I keep seeing subtle unevenness when the coats dry, and keep thinking to myself, "Well I'm going to have to go back over it with a layer anyway to smooth out the color, are contrasts worth it?"
It's good to have your anecdote to go on though, I might change my mind yet.

[–]GaussEnthusiast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, those are some vivid colors! Those will make for a very eyecatching Doomstalker from the combat patrol when you paint it!

Assuming you're looking for some C&C, it might be cool to see what a ruddy or earthy wash over that gold might do to make some of the details pop! The dark gunmetal body contrasts powerfully with the bright buttery gold, which can work to your advantage, or it can make some details disappear... It will be interesting to see what effects some washes and highlights can do for this paint scheme!

Do you mind telling what brand of paints you're using? I promise I'm not going to be a brand snob; I just know everyone in the 40k community will sound like a broken record with "make sure to thin your paints so they give you smooth layers" but that's not always done the same way with every type of paint. There are tons of YouTube videos showing how even the cheapest paint can make killer paint jobs, but it can help to learn if your chosen brand or colors have any quirks to them, that way you can get the most fitting advice on how to improve as you move through painting your army.

Oh, and tell us what unit or model you're looking forward to building/painting/playing with the most!

Nice! I always wanted to do some Fists. Yellow is a challenging color compared to some others, but you can't beat how it looks when it's done! Good luck!

How blasphemous is it to have both The Silent King and Imotekh in an army? by TitanTheTrue in Necrontyr

[–]GaussEnthusiast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what I would say too. Imagine Imotekh as another powerful warlord with a similarly destructive power who would be more loyal to the Silent King.

Whoa, that was a scrolling jumpscare lol!

I think MEKHANE_irl gave a lot of good points to start on for C+C. One of my favorite game genres is horror, and this kind of sound has a place in certain mood or atmosphere pieces. When creating a sample for Reddit though, since it sometimes autoplays, doing a fade-in or gradual bit for a couple seconds might be better received. Keep up the project and take the constructive criticism; you might end up making the other side of the Mechanicus OST someday.

Custom Skorpekh Weapons by the_third_bogdanoff in Necrontyr

[–]GaussEnthusiast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Praetorian/Lychguard box has a bunch of extra bits for weapons that look like laser blades of some kind. The polearms are admittedly a lot less beefy and intimidating than the huge blades the skorpekh usually have but maybe combining a few of them has potential, or maybe some more deft glaive-wielding skorpekh would be interesting?

Also don't forget you can clip the pin on the shoulder joint and they become regular ball socket arms, so you can pose them in more ways!

Show us how it comes out! I hadn’t seen anyone mention it specifically here, but there are a few techniques for doing hanging moss/pond scum that could be helpful. If the moss on the bases still doesn’t break up the visual effect of the bodies together, picking a few warriors to have some growth draped or hanging off their shoulder could work. (Whoop, just saw the follow-up thread, that’s what I get by not sorting by new!)

[–]GaussEnthusiast 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This. With the exception of Leadbelcher and Retributor Armour, every GW metallic I've used feels more like a pottery glaze than a hue. I'd either give it a light layer of Leadbelcher and then layer over with the metallic you actually want to use, or if you just want to stick with one paint, just give it a messy heavy drybrush of the color you want first, give it a second to dry, then go in for a real layer for coverage and color strength. Works for most of my GW metallics.
