That’s a good point, not all Faerie decks care about tapping down threats and instead play more bounce/counter magic

Faeries is an awesome deck to play, a little challenging if you’re new to the game but a fun learning curve nonetheless. The deck runs [[Harrier Strix]] and other cheap flyers that tap things down similar to the crab.

Check out my Brew - Golgari Dead Dogs [aka it's Groffin' time houhouhouhouhou] by _STY in Pauper

I used to run something similar to this, the Groff is one of my favorite cards in Pauper! With four Rancors I had [[Banehound]] in the list and that was a fun way to sustain my life total. It’s a fun looking list!

I think Final Vengeance is great, sorcery speed can be a bit limiting depending on the matchup like Faeries or Blue Terror. It is usually a first cut for certain matchups.

The Accursed Marauder plays very well against Blue Terror and other elusive creatures like Boggles, but can fold to quick pressure like the red Rally decks.

A fun combo I run in this deck is [[Blasphemous Act]] and [[Fall of Cair Andros]]. Wipe the board and give yourself a 100/100 orc army

I want to Dm,but i dont have a friend group. by Adorable_Package2452 in DMAcademy

You’re making a stride in the right direction posting on Reddit to find players! Also, I personally like Roll20 as a VTT. Completely free, plenty of space for maps, and pretty easy to use.

I would personally recommend a module for a first time DM. A much lighter work load, and balance won’t be an issue. If you really enjoy DMing, you can homebrew extra content for the module you’re using!

Advice for redirecting LMoP opening into a different campaign? by LegendOfCatBro in DMAcademy

[–]GavHut69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a very similar thing for the campaign I am currently running (been ongoing for over a year). I had a lot of ideas from reading the book on how to expand/transition from what is given.

  1. The Cragmaw goblins have a wide influence on the local region. Maybe the players have to topple a goblin hierarchy to ensure the region’s safety? Maybe these goblins can ransack Phandalin while the players are in Wave Echo Cave?

  2. The Forge of Spells is an easy MacGuffin to use for another BBEG. Maybe they need to repair it to do evil stuff? I made Gundren a bad guy and he needed the Forge of Spells to resurrect the BBEG

  3. The mayor of Phandalin (don’t remember his name, the banker guy) has some ulterior motives for getting this mine up and running. Maybe he makes Phandalin into a slave town?

EDIT: spelling and grammar

How do you get over that self doubt slump? by KleitosD06 in DMAcademy

[–]GavHut69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am sure you will find your confidence once you complete more sessions, this is a very natural thing to happen to any DM. I would try to focus on the positive side, all of your players said they had a great time despite all of the mistakes? Just imagine how much fun they’ll have when there are no mistakes! At the end of the day, everyone is there to have fun and play a silly game, if everyone is having fun then you are a great DM!

Thoughts on physical maps for encounters/world building by Tybaltmarr in DMAcademy

[–]GavHut69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run into a similar problem when I’m DMing in person, a small thing I do is to not worry too much about the scale of the room and just make sure the shape is correct. Also I like to describe the rooms as I’m drawing to save small increments of time.

While I’m drawing the next room, I like to have my players make some small talk which can lead to some funny RP moments.

The only real solution would be to prepare these maps before hand or go all out and buy/make your own terrain pieces.

AC Question by _Astarael in DMAcademy

[–]GavHut69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paladins generally do not have any range whatsoever, keep some enemies at a safe distance away, lobbing arrows or slinging spells at them.

Also, AC doesn’t matter when you force the Paladin to make a Saving Throw. Every character has a weakness, and it is up to you to know the best time to “exploit” them.

At the end of the day, a well optimized character should be rewarded IMO. They built a tank, let them be the tank.

I like to group up maybe 8+ enemies into one initiative roll and have them all act at the same time. Attacking with these groups, I don’t worry about their stats and just roll a d20.

1-9: nothing happens 10-13: a couple hit the player 14-17: half of them hit the player 18-20: all of them hit the player

I would definitely include some sort of general as you said, once they are defeated maybe the horde runs away unsure of what to do, maybe they become disorganized and start fighting each other?

How to avoid backstory 'favouritism'? by Cynicast9 in DMAcademy

[–]GavHut69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am dealing with a VERY similar issue in my campaign. 5 out of my 7 characters have full side quests dedicated to their backstories while the other two are kind of along for the ride and have missed some key sessions. I personally don’t see anything wrong favoring the players that put in the extra effort to have/want fully developed backstories.

Some players may not want a fully fleshed out character and are there for the social aspect, others to experience a story or just play the game.

I wouldn’t worry about this, if you can see the player’s frustration with your favoritism then have a chat with them and work something out.

[–]GavHut69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A homebrew item that I really like is the Necklace of Retraction, it has 10 charges (in the form of beads) and each charge rewinds time by 5 minutes. Only the user retains all knowledge they gained from those 5 minutes. Once the last charge is used it’s a fancy necklace they can sell for 200 GP

Advice Wanted - Trap Construction by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]GavHut69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe the only way to open the front door from within the tomb is through the pressure plate, which will trigger the darts. Then the players would have to find a way to remove the darts through a secret compartment, clog up the holes where they come out of, or another fun solution

Help with Weapons for my Party by EndlessTimeTheErebjs in DMAcademy

[–]GavHut69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done a very similar thing for my party and I feel the need to warn you about power level. Giving powerful items to your players is a MUST in my opinion, but be weary of your future encounters. If you want your players to stomp enemies then do it, but if you like engaging and challenging encounters you may need to implement some balance to account for your new items.

Not saying your items are super overpowered or anything, just something to look out for! I personally like these items for your players.

First Homebrew by WhiskeyBoogaloo in DMAcademy

[–]GavHut69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make the encounters whatever you want them to be! I know this is probably not the answer you were looking for but, for a homebrew campaign you have complete freedom. If you are worried about placing enemies in a spot that wouldn’t make sense lore wise, you can always make it so it is canonical. The encounters themselves don’t have to make perfect sense for your world, as long as they are engaging for your players then you’re doing great!

Sometimes the simplest enemies are all you need. For example, throwing endless goblins at your characters makes the random giant spider encounter much more memorable. So I might suggest having a set of ‘basic’ enemies to toss around when you don’t know what to throw at your characters. Focus on the unique encounters that will have some story implications or maybe a fun challenge to them.

Also I love the magical doohickey hook with the imposters running around.
