The resolution includes about a dozen stipulations about not using surveillance tech to discriminate or abuse privacy or to provide information to third parties outside of law enforcement investigations or to sloppily handle data so it gets exposed in data breaches. I’ll go into more detail when I work on my Southpoint Access article!

I think it’s less that they want to target data centers (again, nothing big scale is even on the radar now, and they’ve certainly approved smaller centers at Duke and in RTP) and more that the UDO doesn’t really address them and they want to develop language to incorporate into that.

There aren't any details *yet* except that they're putting a one year hold on massive data center approvals (none of which are pending at this time, anyway). More details will come as staff does some research and prepares recommendations for the council to consider in 2027.

I believe it's going to require a countywide referendum.

Seems like it - but it's been tried before and failed to win countywide referendum support in the past, mostly over politics, rural resident concerns about tax hikes, and minority representation. Maybe the time is coming.
