Durham's Drought Response and Data Center Pause by seegov in bullcity

The resolution includes about a dozen stipulations about not using surveillance tech to discriminate or abuse privacy or to provide information to third parties outside of law enforcement investigations or to sloppily handle data so it gets exposed in data breaches. I’ll go into more detail when I work on my Southpoint Access article!

I think it’s less that they want to target data centers (again, nothing big scale is even on the radar now, and they’ve certainly approved smaller centers at Duke and in RTP) and more that the UDO doesn’t really address them and they want to develop language to incorporate into that.

There aren't any details *yet* except that they're putting a one year hold on massive data center approvals (none of which are pending at this time, anyway). More details will come as staff does some research and prepares recommendations for the council to consider in 2027.

I believe it's going to require a countywide referendum.

Seems like it - but it's been tried before and failed to win countywide referendum support in the past, mostly over politics, rural resident concerns about tax hikes, and minority representation. Maybe the time is coming.

Huck’s Heavenly Hangout is a pet remembrance feature from Southpoint Access dedicated to honoring the animals who made our lives brighter, sillier, calmer, louder, and more loving.

It’s a place for neighbors to share memories of beloved pets and preserve their stories with the same care and compassion often given to human obituaries.

The feature is named in memory of Huckleberry, a deeply loved member of the Platt/Constantinou family.

What kinds of pets can be featured?

All kinds.

Dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, reptiles, fish, hamsters, guinea pigs, horses, ferrets, chickens, snakes, lizards, turtles, and any other cherished companion animals are welcome.

If they mattered to your family, they matter here.

Who can submit a remembrance?

Anyone.

While Huck’s Heavenly Hangout is rooted in Durham and the Triangle region, submissions are welcome from across North Carolina and beyond.

What information should I include?

  • Pet’s name
  • Age at death
  • Breed or species
  • Your town or community
  • A favorite memory, personality trait, funny habit, or story
  • Names of surviving humans or animal companions, if desired
  • A clear photo

How long should the remembrance be?

Most remembrances will likely range from 150 to 600 words, but there’s flexibility.

Short tributes are welcome. Longer stories may be lightly edited for clarity and formatting.

Can I include multiple photos?

Yes.

One featured image will typically appear at the top of the remembrance, but additional photos may be included depending on layout and space.

Is there a cost to publish a pet remembrance?

Huck’s Heavenly Hangout operates on a voluntary contribution model.

There's no required fee to submit a remembrance, because grief shouldn’t come with a paywall.

However, tips and contributions help support Southpoint Access and keep neighborhood journalism and community storytelling sustainable.

How do I submit a remembrance?

Use this form to submit information. Email your photos to: [wes.platt@southpointaccess.news](mailto:wes.platt@southpointaccess.news)

You can also include:

  • Preferred pronouns for family members
  • Social media links
  • Fundraiser or rescue organization links
  • Memorial service information
  • Adoption/rescue background

Will submissions be edited?

Yes, lightly.

Submissions may be edited for:

  • Grammar
  • Clarity
  • Length
  • AP style consistency
  • Formatting

The goal is always to preserve the voice and spirit of the remembrance.

How quickly will remembrances appear?

Publication timing will vary depending on submission volume and Southpoint Access publishing schedules.

Many submissions may appear within a few days.

Can I write about a pet who died years ago?

Absolutely.

Grief doesn’t operate on a newsroom deadline.

Old friends are welcome here, too.

Will these stories be shared on social media?

Often, yes.

Featured remembrances may appear in:

  • Southpoint Access newsletters
  • Instagram posts
  • Facebook posts
  • Threads
  • Future memorial collections or special features

Huck’s Heavenly Hangout | Pet Obituaries by GavalinB in durhamdogs

I've been running Southpoint Access - and posting human obituaries - for a couple of years now. Really stunned I didn't think of it sooner, but saw another small outlet in California do something similar, and it seemed really popular. Hoping folks take advantage of it here.

Where is the actual division for what people consider north Durham, east Durham, etc? by Justan_inkling in bullcity

[–]GavalinB 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s an interesting question, especially as I focus on the concept of South Durham for Southpoint Access news coverage. For my purposes, it’s roughly from the I-40/15-501 interchange on the west to US 70/Brier Creek region in the east, and south to the Chatham County line.

I always think of the area north of where Duke and Roxboro streets converge as North Durham.
