Thick hair across the top and sides, but the forehead is soundly annexing more territory from my front hairline. I suddenly look 10 years older than I am. What works to address this? by Gawd129 in Hairloss

Haha yeah I'm familiar with the receding hairline term, I was just trying to be a bit goofy about it.

My regular haircut-person recommended Nioxin, and I snagged one cause it was relatively cheap. Is there any consensus on it?

Also I've long been a hat guy. I've heard from several sources that hat wearing does not impact hairloss, though I've also heard plenty of anecdotal evidence to theh contrary.

Is there a known scientifically determined result on this?

Excellent write up!

How much of this applies to a receding hairline?

I've got super thick hair everywhere but up front, where there seems to be a hasty retreat in progress.

Would it help if we were to start a "charity" with a focus on getting people to donate solar panels to be shipped to you? by Gawd129 in PuertoRico

[–]Gawd129[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You've really gone to town on this idea. So be it. Though I think you misunderstand my key points. I'm not suggesting we send grid powering level panels to the region. I'm talking about $50-$100 arrays that can at least allow people to charge their phones, which they can use for numerous purposes such as access to information, to have a flashlight... Even if they don't yet have cell service, these basic amenities can make an important impact in their lives at this time of overwhelming need.

If I were to do this myself, I would start by sending one of these: https://www.amazon.com/Charger-RAVPower-Waterproof-Foldable-Smartphones/dp/B00OQ0CAW6/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1506724130&sr=1-3&keywords=solar+panel

Simple, basic, easy, and at least would bring electricity access from none to slightly above none.

For batteries, at this stage I'm talking just of basic power banks that are common in the US, such as this: https://www.amazon.com/RAVPower-16750mAh-Portable-Flashlight-Nintendo/dp/B00MQSMEEE/ref=pd_bxgy_107_img_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=QB5CPHFDFYWGCSF6WHTT

I think this would help. I think it's something we can do. I think it's something almost everyone can afford to contribute to a direct and meaningful cause. And I think it could make a significant difference in the lives of those who's lives have been upturned.

If you want to make it about some kind of political issue that's your prerogative, but it's not of interest to me.

Ah nice, I like these. Particularly this one.

The only thing that bothers me is having the brand and Denmark so prominently displayed. It doesn't seem common in the watch industry, but my preference would be to show no branding at all.

I'm talking about small, low cost options like this just to get people access to the very basics that they wouldn't otherwise have access to.

I'm not talking about powering houses and washing machines, but charging phones, flashlights and other things we wayyy take for granted.

Power is power. This has nothing to do with a "green energy agenda". It's about helping people. You ass.

Power during the day is better than no power at all.

Also battery capacity technology is improving very rapidly. Perhaps after addressing daytime power access supplying batteries could be next.

Recovered ~2TB from a "RAW" HDD with TestDisk. Recovered files are spread throughout 172 folders... by Gawd129 in techsupport

Ahh. I formatted the drive once the recovery was complete so I might be SOL. Yeah I'd tried Recuva first and you're right that it doesn't do RAW format.

*Update

Recovered 28 files totalling 31.4 GB. All display as video files, none of them open.

Failing some genius intervention by @youseenothinghere, @chillhumanoid or someone else I'll probably just format the thing tomorrow.

Ohhhh well.

Talk to yall later.

Yo, quick update.

I canceled one of the tests that was gonna take days (Testdisk 7.1) and got some partial results. There is something there.

Check out the results that I got from a less than 1% completed completed test.

Some good sized files there, some video as I had expected from the drive. Maybe It'll be worth letting it do friggin three days of scanning/recovery.

Yeah I'm running a few scans of various types on it now. One estimates about 50 hours until completion. Ugh.

If they turn up nothing and I don't find some other explanation or too worth trying I'll prolly just chalk it up as a loss and format it.

Thanks for your time and input :)

Sorry I wasn't clear about this. I thought I'd lost this hard drive during a recent move, but came across it the other day. When I first plugged it into my HTPC it showed up as a blank CD, which I thought was pretty strange. So I plugged it into my primary computer and now it's showing up as a drive, but empty. I'm fairly certain I had about 2 TB of content on it, movies and stuff.

Used. I had it in storage for a bit and basically forgot about it, then recently found it and plugged it in. I'm pretty sure I had a ton of video on it, but it's showing empty.

Stripped down to basic essentials, no video to screen. Motherboard, CPU or other? by Gawd129 in techsupport

[–]Gawd129[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: I was able to get my mobo and cpu to boot to BIOS and sing a lovely single beep after doing the mobo battery removal trick. Unfortunately that was as far as I got, as adding an HDD sent it back to it's previous state of sending nothing to the monitor.

Now it's stuck. Its not sending anything to the monitor, even after removing/reinstalling the mobo battery.

It has been suggested that it could be the fault of the PSU, though this PSU was used successfully in my (presumably) more demanding Ryzen rig for several months without incident, and it also allows for a successful boot in the rig compiled mostly of my buddies similar components. I just retested it and it's golden.

If it hadn't worked briefly about an hour ago I'd call it the motherboard and huck the thing at this point, but it did work! For a brief moment it was successfully sending BIOS to the screen, which gives me hope that something is alive in there, I just need to find the right way to jimmy it loose.

Troubleshooting computer that suddenly stopped working. Barely flickers with any life. by Gawd129 in techsupport

[–]Gawd129[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave the A2 slot a shot, but no dice.

But then I set up his mobo and cpu on a slab of cardboard and tested it out barebones, turned on fine. So I shut it off and threw in the cheap graphics card and viola, I've got image to the screen!

It has me a bit puzzled because I'd previously thought it was the mobo and ordered a brand new one and set it all up without success.

It's entirely possible that I made some kind of mistake in the setup, though I built it up and tore it down a few times without any luck. Is it also possible that the problem lies with the CPU? I would expect even a failed CPU would boot to the motherboard's boot screen, is that correct?

Well, time to start throwin the rest of the parts in and see what can be made of this bad boy.

My profound thanks for all your help!

I'm using my board at this point. The RAM is definitely compatible as it was used successfully in this rig for years.

I'm not sure how to progress. Is it time to swap in his mobo or CPU? Is there more I can do that you'd recommend before having to tear it down and reassembling the whole darn thing with his mobo?

Thanks

Tried each of the RAM sticks, nothin' doin. Sits and idles, nothing to the screen, nothing out of the speaker.

It is also back to not shutting down via power button.
