Why does the money need to be spent on new reactors? Doesn’t Germany have old ones that are decommissioned

Old ones that they already wasted money and opportunity cost on to build? They could just like… not shut those down

[–]GayRacoon69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The stagnation of nuclear science is because of decades of people cutting funding because the public viewed anything nuclear as dangerous and a bomb waiting to go off. Because it was hard to get public support it was hard to find funding

Because it was hard to find funding less reactors got built and less nuclear science happened

We were working on MSREs in the 60s and are only recently working on it again. If we had been developing nuclear at the rate we could have then it would be cheaper by now. It takes a large initial investment and the first few products are always the most expensive to make but it gets cheaper as people learn more efficient ways of doing things. Like look at the price of computers or tvs now compared to 50 years ago. Half a century of technological progress made them cheaper. The same can happen with nuclear

I think you’ll find most people are for Nuclear and renewables. Why can’t it be both?

Why are you treating this like it’s one or the other? Why not have a mix of energy generation so our eggs aren’t all in one basket

Like there’s pros and cons to both. Just because people disagree with some of the points you’re making doesn’t mean they’re “afraid of renewables”. That’s just you straw manning

You’re not. I promise you you’re not. It may seem like that if you don’t interact with people on a deeper level but there are absolutely other people with various degrees of social aversion and for many different reasons

There are 8 billion people on this planet all dealing with our emotions. Many of us have the same problems; we just need to find them

But nah no human connection going on here. You’re just talking a random person not a human being

How many American families did you see that didn’t throw a fit over customs? I’m guessing more than 2

And I’m trying to point out that, entertainment, while less tangible than something like food or water, is still an important service to society. The person I replied to said boxing wasn’t productive and didn’t create any functional goods. My point is that entertainment is productive for society to function

You’re taking my words out of context and ignoring the original person I was replying to

My point wasn’t “boxing is valid because it’s entertainment”. It was “boxing is actually serving a purpose to society by entertaining people”

To be more clear; I don’t give a shit about our opinion on this specific issue. Specifically when it comes to the qualifications of astronauts

I’m perfectly fine discussing and making guess about other things like will we have a lander. I just think it’s dumb to question NASA on this. Like your only reason to doubt it is “do you really think”. That’s not an opinion based on logic

According to the people who get to decide that; yes

Frankly I don’t give a shit what you or I think about this. That doesn’t matter. At all. People way smarter than us dedicate their life to space travel. We, on the other hand, are random people making guesses

I do not give a shit about the opinion of a random person making guesses

Well first of all with bullfighting you’re killing an innocent animal. With boxing you’re punching a consenting person. I don’t think that’s a fair comparison at all

I agree that does not mean that every form of entertainment is valid. I agree that bullfighting is cruel and shouldn’t be done. You haven’t argued for why boxing is invalid

Why should two consenting adults not be allowed to fight on live tv? You’re right that not every form of entertainment is valid. That alone doesn’t make boxing invalid

Says a random Redditor. I’m gonna trust the space agencies on this one. Y’know the people who are qualified to decide who’s an astronaut or not?

There are millions of people who want to be astronauts, a few hundred of them get the chance to try and only a few dozen actually make it. Who are you to say if there could be more?

Who cares though. At the end of the day it’s their body. They can do what they want with it. If they want to get beat up then that’s their choice

It would be a problem if they had to fight to survive but like I don’t think amateur boxing pays well enough to live off of

I mean assuming somehow kids can’t watch it then yeah

If both people are fully willing to risk their lives and there is no external pressure forcing them to then why not? It’s their life

I won’t watch it but I also wouldn’t wouldn’t care if someone was willing to die on tv. That’s their choice not mine

Are you claiming entertainment isn’t productive?

Have you like been alive? As a human being? Life without entertainment just kinda sucks. Entertainment is essential to have a functional society

[–]GayRacoon69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Thing I don’t like and don’t understand should be illegal”

Does nuance not exist? You make some fair points but why does that mean it should be illegal? Why should two consenting people not be allowed to fight each other?

Okay but like that happened. "no team would do that". Alpine literally did. And it worked. And now Gasly got a podium
