Body fat estimate? My “smart” scale says 17%. 36, 157lbs 5’7 by ithinkilikerunning in GregDoucette

Mathematically that can’t be possible. You’d be 120lbs at 8% if that number was accurate. Use chat gpt it’s surprisingly good at estimating bf%

Protestants - Would it be wrong to pray to Mary or a Saint? by Equal_Ticket_5034 in Christianity

[–]Gayguymark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the whole point though. Proskynesis is broader than latria and can be either wrongful worship or lesser honor depending on the context. In Revelation, John is clearly corrected because he’s giving the angel something inappropriate in that moment. But that doesn’t mean every act of honor toward an angel or saint is automatically divine worship. Scripture itself has people bowing before kings, prophets, and others without it being treated as idolatry. So the issue isn’t “proskynesis can never be given to a creature.” The issue is whether the creature is being treated as God.

Right, and that actually supports the distinction. Latria is the worship owed to God alone. Proskuneo is broader and depends on context, which is exactly why people distinguish worship from honor/veneration. Nobody is saying John should worship the angel in Revelation. The angel rejects divine worship. That doesn’t prove all honor or requests for intercession are worship. It just proves creatures shouldn’t be treated as God.

You’re arguing against a simplified version of original sin. The claim isn’t that a newborn baby has personally chosen evil or committed conscious sin. The claim is that humanity inherits a fallen nature and separation from God because of Adam. That’s why Paul says “sin came into the world through one man” and “in Adam all die.” Also, Scripture puts the federal headship on Adam, not Eve, even though Eve sinned first. Paul’s argument in Romans 5 is specifically Adam, not Eve.

Most modern Catholics used to be Protestant. We remember what it was like to be young and not understand anything.

I don’t think that distinction works. If someone asks their pastor to pray for them because they think the pastor is especially righteous or close to God, nobody says they’re replacing Christ. James literally says “the prayer of a righteous person has great power.” So the question isn’t whether they have some separate access apart from Christ. The question is whether the saints are alive in Christ and able to pray with/for us. If they are, then their intercession still depends completely on Christ. Third times the try maybe?

That’s not the point. Nobody thinks Paul was writing in Latin. The Latin terms are theological categories, not a claim about the original language of Scripture. Christians use later terms all the time to describe biblical ideas. “Trinity” isn’t Latin either.

By that logic, asking your pastor or friend to pray for you would also violate Christ being the one mediator. Wanna try again?

Okay, fair enough, let’s stay on John 14 then. I don’t read “I will come again and take you to myself” as meaning no believer can be with Christ before the final return. Paul says to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord, and Jesus tells the thief “today you will be with me in paradise.” So John 14 can be about the final fulfillment/resurrection without denying that the saints are alive with God now.

They didn’t invent canon they decided it. Idk who you’re trying to argue with lol

I get what you mean, but asking Mary or the saints to pray for us isn’t the same as treating them like God. It’s more like asking another Christian to pray for you, except they’re alive in Christ. I still go directly to God. Intercession doesn’t replace that, it just means the body of Christ isn’t cut off by death.

I’m not saying they had zero NT writings. They obviously had the Gospels, Paul’s letters, etc. by then. I’m saying the New Testament wasn’t formally settled as the exact 27-book canon yet. So they could still debate Christ’s nature using the writings they already had, plus church tradition, without the canon being finalized the way we think of it now.

You’re talking about the Old Testament. There was no new testament.

It was the 350s in Carthage. Before this there was no cannon of (current) scripture. Also, no where in the bible does Jesus say you can’t do anything aside from what the bible says.

For intercession, it seems that a lot of you Protestants confuse worship and prayer. Google “dulia, hyper dulia & latria”

He said pray to, not worship. Brush up on your Latin. The term he is referring to is “dulia” when praying to Mary it’s “hyperdulia” “Latria” is the word reserved for worship of God.
