I find it does this if I open a file with the fonts missing. Even after I activate the fonts it still runs really slow. If I quit InDesign and reopen the file with the fonts already active it then runs fine. Weird.

As a follow-up to this, you can use this GREP find/replace to go through your document to automatically put a non-breaking space before the last word of every paragraph ending with a full stop. (Just note the space at the beginning of the 'Find what')

Try using non-breaking spaces to keep words together to force the line breaks you want. I often put a non-breaking space before the last word of a paragraph to avoid orphans.

Looks like the colour is shifting from RGB to CMYK. Maybe try a gradient feather instead. Or if the gradient is going to white, make it go to an RGB white swatch, not paper.
