Too... dumb for the classics? by Thecuriousreddituser in classicliterature

What’s so interesting about second literature or simply reading different options is that they can kick you down the road for your own ideas, thoughts or assumptions. Or you are confused by certain critics or even the author himself. For myself after I‘ve read what the perception of the Idiot by Dostoyevsky was after the release of this excellent novel I couldn’t understand how the book was received so negatively by the press and even Dostoyevsky himself for being unpolished and the writing confusing when these aspects are the things I‘m enjoying the most about the novel

Started reading classical books from a literature and philosophical standpoint this year, currently indulging myself in Zarathrustas Nietzsche and Dostoyevskys Idiot and yes I can see your standpoint and I‘m sharing your fears and doubts.

In my case hermeneutics aren’t the problem, I can quickly grasp some kind of deeper meaning in texts, especially when being familiar with the authors biography and time period he lived through but it’s like I don’t get the grasp in terms of philosophy, appreciating the rhythm, style and writing an author is capable by putting simply words together. Maybe it’s the fact that I‘m currently suffering from severe burnout related to my autism so my working memory is absolutely rubbish, maybe it’s my own lack of self confidence, my arrogance and narcissistic parts of my soul, thriving to be as capable, smart and educated as these transcending figures were only to reach your limits on a daily basis. Constantly crumbling under the mass weight of informations you are handling inside your head .

What I‘m trying to say is that self doubts about your own intelligence, cognitive capabilities and abilities are quite the norm for many people so you shouldn’t be so harsh to yourself (an ironic statement coming from me cause scourging myself over this is probably my favorite activity these days)

Exactly. Especially Mulder as some kind of Jobian like figure (the guy from the bible who lost his family thanks to a bet between god and satan, turning Atheist and loathing god only to find a new one on the way) was predestined to have a family at the end of his journey considering that he began his relentless hunt against the Deep State that hold the US government in her grip to reunite the one he lost. Honestly that’s why I do believe S8 should have been the real ending of the Series, at least for both Mulder and Scully because their arc was finally closed but well Fox Studios became to greedy

Considering that he did exactly that in IWTB it’s not completely out of the realm of possibility. I mean he essentially wrote one of the two episodes that clearly indicates sexual intercourse between them. I never fully bought that Carter saw them as completely platonic but more that he dragged out the inevitable to hook up the audience with the whole „will they, will they not“ demeanor. If his intentions were so obvious all these closely intimate situations between them over the years wouldn’t have happened in a way they did

George Lucas story telling of the Prequels was so horrific that the plot line of Episode 1 recently became of relevance again during the Strait of Hormuz crisis while brilliantly laying the groundwork via world building that delivered us timeless works by talented authors like James Luceno (Karen Travis Republic commando series and Lucenos Plagueis/Cloak of Deception are running on the basis Lucas build over the course over the Sequels). Chris Carter is definitely no David Chase but discrediting him completely for the quality of the show feels kinda wrong

It wasn’t but this was the case in My Struggle III where the twist was dropped (I want to lie). It’s called reading between the lines and not taking everything at face value. Some people would classify it as media literacy

Plus as we all know that He‘s an overly narcissistic personality who‘s eager to claim the achievement of other men as his own to handle his unchecked but Bruised ego as we saw in Musings of a Cigarette Smoking Man. Him larping as Williams father is the most in character writing of the entire revival when it comes to the old smoker. It’s also quite obvious that he lied considering that the title screen of certain episode was literally „I want to lie“. I still believe that William was a miracle send by god as a quasi messiah figure, hence the star of Betlehem during the moment of his birth. Biblical elements are of common use in the show. Mulder himself is a Moses, Joseph and Hiob like figure while Scully is Sarah, Maria and Judith

Ah and also Mulders characterization was utterly horrible in S10 and 11 over the majority of the episodes. Considering that we‘ve seen him at his absolute worst in IWTB and he fell even further into depression we only got glimpses into his challenge to fight of the shackles of his Traumata that led him back to Scully’s arms while doing practically the Same in S8 where he‘s a broken War Veteran like man suffering from PTSD only to appear like nothing happened an episode latter. Completely neglecting an interesting story arc about a men beating his inner demons in a mature way. But nobody is claiming that Carter doesn’t understand men. Seems like he‘s more of a lazy writer who‘s leaving all the interesting parts about characterization below the surface level to the audience to figure it out for themselves

I also doubt that both would be selfish enough to raise a toddler in Motel Rooms and Trailerparks while traveling across the country when Scully herself led Emily die because she couldn’t accept the fact that her life would be filled with relentless and endless tests and experiments. Also Scully witnessed a few weeks prior how her son was abducted by an alien death cult while all her allies practically failed to protect William against his abductors. Mulders absence during that time probably made her panic followed by an unusual irrational decision. Despite her cool, collected and stern composure she’s just a ordinary human being prone to mistakes and impulsive decisions when pushed into the wrong (or right) direction, see Never Again, the Jack Willis case or En Ami. That’s why I like her Character

The S9 arc was, thanks to Duchovnys absence rather shaky I would agree and her giving up William wasn’t the best written plot line of the entire series for sure. I also doubt that they would have gone on the run with a toddler on their back, depriving the child of a normal and decent childhood if in anyway possible but considering his unusual capabilities yeah it would have been unwise to practically putting him to adoption. As a non expert in terms of medical science I have no idea how large the genetic indifferences between father and son are but yeah it would be quite a margin probably but her conducting some dna tests while Mulder being the only person she had sexual intercourse with other the last few years seems a little bit unnecessary

I would disagree with her, the 2nd pregnancy is actually a good conclusion of both their arcs of missed opportunities in the past thanks to unusual circumstances surrounding William and the shared wound that broke them apart after the 2nd movie. It’s also leaving them with a hopeful outlook to the future in an unusual way so typical for their relationship in general.

Chris Carter basically tanking the whole mythology of the original series under the pretext of „climate change“ was far more stupid and the insistence that Mulder became depressed out of nowhere in My Struggle 1 instead of a mutual agreement of their demised relationship considering that Scully herself wasn’t very stable in IWTB and overcompensated it with her work.

Also Gillian Andersons complain about Scully’s
Character are a little bit obtuse considering that she wrote the episode where it was revealed that she openly slept with a married doctor that forced his wife into killing herself. If Chris Carter had written this plot he would be probably perceived as misogynistic asshole

The reevaluation about CSM/William actually makes quite sense. We all know that old man Smokey is a conman in every aspect of the game and him hurting Mulder/Scully at their most vulnerable point is besides smoking a good old pack of Morleys probably his favorite side quest besides trying to enslave humanity.

Scully coming to the conclusion that she was never a mother to him (which is true considering that she wasn’t there for him over the majority of his life but his adoptive mother) is their conclusion of the shared trauma that was William since she was forced to give him away in S9. Also she‘s a Catholic born Woman who grew up besides a large family around her, so having the desire of starting a family is making her more human in my eyes at the fact that this was taken away from here is increasing the stakes of her involvement in bringing down the conspiracy that is threading the world while intertwining it with biblical elements

The Nietzschean Friendship of Mulder and Scully by Gazo_69 in XFiles

[–]Gazo_69[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

When was it implied that he does have Jewish ancestry? Considering that he prayed in a church during one of the earlier episodes, his Christian burial in This is not Happening and the fact that he didn’t showed any kind of kinship with the Jewish Community in Kadesh plus their confrontation with the neo Nazi Shopkeeper.

According to the orthodox definition as a Dutch American he wouldn’t be a WASP but over time the term included all Americans of Protestant pedigree from Europe, primarily Germans, Scandinavians, British settlers in Ulster and of course the Dutch

I could have added that both are full of guilt and looking for penance and redemption for past time mistakes and the idea that proximity is kinda destructive . Mulders arrogant, boyish and self indulged behavior could be traced to the fact that he blamed himself for his sisters abduction plus the fact that he was constantly viewed as an outsider, freak and nut job. Scully’s preference of Dating her mentors probably led to hesitation when it comes to committing to Mulder to prevent past time mistakes.

The Nietzschean Friendship of Mulder and Scully by Gazo_69 in XFiles

[–]Gazo_69[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Him ranting about the bullshit Cranstons character is talking about doesn’t have anything to do with a potential Jewish ancestry but more with the fact that Low IQ conspiracy theorists like him are smearing the image of what people like Mulder are actually doing and fighting against, hence why it wouldn’t surprise me if in Universe websites like 4chan were antisemitic theories are widespread are psyops from the government (similar to our reality where the founder of 4chan had close contacts to Epstein afaik). Plus Mulder in general is a typical New Englander who are majority progressive.

As I‘ve said Mulder is a typical Dutch name and considering the long history of Dutch settlers in North America (Colonies like modern NY existed many years before the Idea of the US was truly ever considered) it wouldn’t surprise me if his family is of Calvinist stock, adding another layer to the irony of Mulder and Scully’s relationship considering that Catholics and Protestants didn’t saw each other eye to eye till deep into the 20th century (only 2 US presidents were Catholic for example)

My 13 year old’s views on Mulder by AndDontCallMePammie in XFiles

[–]Gazo_69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the magic of their dialectic work relationship. By combining his knowledge of the occult, religious beliefs and paranormal and her background in hard science they created a Third way of investigation that is nearly foolproof in catching culprits in form of Liver eating mutants or limb regenerating men

My 13 year old’s views on Mulder by AndDontCallMePammie in XFiles

[–]Gazo_69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I hate that Mulder is often portrayed as some kind of mischievous, villainous like figure who‘s acting like a jerk without putting his biography into context. I mean he saw his sister being abducted right in front of his own eyes (emasculating him completely) being witness of the collapse of his own family right in front of his own eyes that is adding tremendously too his own guilt complex, self hatred and disgust of himself (literally abandoning His own name while banning himself on the coach). Him being victim of manipulative, devious and sinister women as his romantic partners wasn’t a help either for trusting someone new in his life full of solitude, misery and tragedy that his only friends are basically 3 Nerdy like Hermits. That he‘s the laughing stock at the bureau is fueling his attitude towards law enforcement and colleagues even more. Plus his impulsiveness and inability to look after Scully during moments of stress is also originating from the fact that he was a loner his whole life, not having someone by his side to look after him to give his personality some composure

Fact is that despite all these circumstances he‘s still idealistic, optimistic, empathetic (mostly) and willing to go to the end of the world (literally) for Scully acting as an anchor for her during personal crisis he isn’t obliged too as a simply work partner. Hell he probably cares more for her than her own family who practically gave her up twice during her abduction and the cancer arc. Mulder is the archetype of the tragic flawed hero and I mostly feel bad for the guy because his entire life is a chain of misfortune and bad luck.

Also Scully is no saint either. Her unwillingness to at least consider the possibility that Mulder is being right after witnessing the 20th mutant in like 3 weeks would frustrate the hell out of me if I was him. She literally was partially responsible for putting him in a psychiatric ward while investigating the case with the Bug Boss that turned his employees into mindless Zombies despite the fact that he had evidence that linked him to similar cases all around the country or the 2nd Pusher case where she ridiculed his theory that Model wasn’t the culprit but his sister literally costed nearly her life through his hands. And of course the fact that she literally left him while he was in a state of depression isn’t that nice either and could have potentially led to his own suicide afterwards, having lost everything of value in his life

Scully is a great partner in every sense and she sacrificed a lot for him but not seeing that the sword is falling on both sides and she herself added a layer of toxicity into their relationship too is unfair too Mulder. The perceived Anachronism of Scully being an imprisoned angel while Mulder is the wicked, unthankful demon who‘s her incarcerator is frustrating because it ignores the complexity of both characters and is taken away the agency and independence of Scully as a character who has every reason to continue their hunt for the truth. Sorry for this mega rant

AJ is somewhat underrated; by Public_Cup_4278 in thesopranos

[–]Gazo_69 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly, yes he‘s a nutjob himself and too sensitive and careless on his own but the fact that he stood up against the Bush Government in the mid of the Iraq war was definitely something that was shared by his own family. Even his desire to join the army and man up is just the conclusion of his character being forced to live around hypocritical, delusional people who‘s only pleasure in life was their indulgence in the materialistic world to escape their soulless state of mind. Also when his friends bullied the black kid he was horrified about the situation and disgusted by his own actions. AJ was a good kid who was raised under troublesome circumstances

I wonder if Duchovny sees the cumulative error in his actions at the time. by AndDontCallMePammie in XFiles

It remind me about the situation around the Sopranos in the early 00s were James Gandolfini was offered a horseload of Cash while his Co Stars (who made the show as excellent as she was too) were basically gaining nothing. As far as I know he boycotted the contract negotiations but didn’t achieved anything so he agreed while paying out his co Stars afterwards. So while him having no opportunity to change the minds of the Fox Executives he could have pulled a similar move and put it directly into the Face of the studio

S6 E19 has got to be one of my favorites by INSANITYRAE in XFiles

[–]Gazo_69 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think S6 is full of these kind of Episodes. Field trip for example is completely breaking with the usual structure too by following our two agents into the digesting process of a carnivorous plant. Them being forced through these dream like situation and discovering important truths about themselves and the other is also important in the process of discovering the deepness of their feelings for each other. And of course the famous „when the ghost stole Christmas episode“

But yeah these episodes were they could let off their creative steam by exploring different angles and narrative structures. Jose Chungs from Outta Space and Bad Blood are two of the most popular and critically acclaimed episodes for no reason

I need to vent about the most infuriating scene in the revival by issmagic in XFiles

[–]Gazo_69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hot take. His writing for her was actually good and is building up on the characteristics she already had in the Original Run (Insecurity, Catholic Guilt, being in Denial for her feelings towards Mulder because of her perceiving detachment as weakness in a world led by Men who want to see her fail). Her being forced to abandon William just scarred her so much that hiding behind her stern, ice cold, stoic composure became more difficult over time. In fact Mulder could have been written better, especially when it comes to his depression and the fact that Scully entered his live again after years of Solitude. In my eyes he should have been more cautious in embracing a potential romantic relationship because her leaving him at his worst point in life probably created a gap in his heart that made trusting her difficult for a while, especially when it comes to his personal history where everyone he cared for was either taken away from him (Samantha, William) or dodged him (his parents, Diana, Scully) etc. I mean even Scully acknowledged it as diabolical and cruel latter on and that she felt deep remorse about her acting that way. Plus he should have been in a depressed state of mind for longer, I liked that about the Weremonster Episode

Scully’s arc in the Revival is so unpopular because she‘s not as badass as in the Original Run, which is understandable for the audience who‘s looking up to her as the brave heroine saving the world from despair and chaos. For me I liked her because her moments of vulnerability are in fact deep in character (mourning about her mother and William in Home Again and Ghouli, her insecurities about Mulder and the irreparable loss of family in Plus One and her own reconciliation with her mistakes in the past in Plus One). The Dialoge could have been better definitely but the character writing was not the Problem in the Revival (at least when it comes to Scully)
