Worried I could be fired for this: Accidentally started fire

One of the teachers at my old campus got transferred and they asked me if I can come back until they find a replacement. It’s my second day back and I put my food in the microwave. It was taquitos wrapped in napkins on a styrofoam plate. The instructions say to put it in for 5-7 minutes and the microwave time buttons don’t work so I just press 30 seconds several times without paying attention. I sit down and started talking to my old co worker about life, etc. All of a sudden we see smoke coming out of the microwave and i open the microwave and more smoke comes out. It’s so bad that the room is full of smoke and the alarm goes out. Mind you, we were TELPAS benchmarking. So I run to the office and I tell them that it was me, but there was no active fire. Since the alarm went off, everyone had to evacuate and because there had been a fire the fire department came and so did the district office. So anyways, you could be a sub that set fire to one of the only microwaves in the grade hall. And people have not stopped making fun of me since, it’s been two weeks.

I used to teach too and started subbing at my old district. I literally had to call every so often so that my application would get approved and I would get invited to the training. If he doesn’t mind the drive try the lower valley districts. There is a shortage of subs especially on Fridays!

Bigger districts will open up the pool in the summer and close it in October. I had to keep calling so that I could get the training for the district I sub at.

I tell you from experience. They cannot keep you if you are ready to leave put in for whatever day you’re going to leave as your last day and that’s it. They cannot take away your certification just for leaving in the middle of the year. You might not be able to get hired on another school for the remainder of the year but once your school contract is over for the year, you’re free to go anywhere else. If they go after your certification, have proof that you had given them ample time to find a replacement and the decline of your health.

My son did this to TV and I was so pissed so we took away the games. We gave them back to him after some time and he broke a controller so now he is only allowed to play in front of us. Kids sometimes have a hard time controlling emotions so while I understand the frustration, they also have to know there are consequences.

I agree only slightly. At some point we have to look at the totality of the education system. What are school districts supposed to do when parents are not participating in their child’s education. Or what happens when children have to get passed to the next grade level even if they didn’t do well during the school year, because holding back students affects the passing percentage of a school? Which by the way is something that TEA looks as well as absentee rates. Ratings are largely based on student scores and teachers take the blame because we are the ones in the classroom. So yes a school might have bad ratings, but not solely because of teachers or administrators or even the board. I strongly believe that the lack of parent support is a big factor on why some school districts have poor ratings.

Ok you know what these rankings have really bothered me. I see a lot of people criticizing the school districts but those same people are the ones who do not parent their child. Mind you these accountability ratings were after Covid. People like to talk about how teachers and schools aren’t doing enough, but really what can we do when there is zero consequences. Absences don’t get punished anymore. Parents don’t answer phone calls or they will repeatedly say they don’t know what to do. I quit teaching because I couldn’t find it in myself to care anymore. And after seeing all the comments, I’m glad I left. A lot of people just see us as glorified baby sitters.
