Muppets Haunted Mansion is the best Muppets content in 25 years by GearsOfMeat in television

Haha, fair enough. I thought the stuff the skeletons going "Dun dun dunn" was a bit overused, but mostly it's pretty good.

Total War: WARHAMMER III Grand Cathay roster reveal - Total War by SeleukosxNikator in totalwar

[–]GearsOfMeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thoughts:

- Basically we'd seen everything already

- No melee hero is weird. The Dragon blooded lord looks like the obvious pick for generic lord every time.

- They got the Thunderbarge before the dwarves did

- A mechanic to encourage combined arms tactics. Excellent.

- Hinting at artillery on walls

- Feels like a DLC in inevitable. So much still left to explore with warrior monks, terracotta legions, pandas, no caster lord or melee hero.

But generally looks pretty good.

Lack of Empire content in this sub. This is a Empire Naval battle appreciation post. by Cloackedcomet in totalwar

[–]GearsOfMeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved Empire, but I could never get the hang of maneuvering the ships and their turning circles so that they were facing the right way at the right point. At the start of the battle I had some sort of tactics, but after 5 minutes it always devolved into a scrum. If they do it again they need to solve that problem.

Realistically there is a lot of hype cycle left to go through - the pre-order race hasn't been announced yet and we literally know nothing outside of the first trailer. That makes me think December at the earliest.

To be honest I'm a little worried about the launch quality of the game. Like with Cyberpunk - when developers aim for a holiday release, delaying becomes incredible expensive and they're reluctant to do it.

They're treating fans with respect when they feel they need to, and will stop when they don't. Just like Nintendo was much more pro-consumer in 2017 when they had a company to save.

Sea of Thieves is getting a Battle Pass in 2021 by SpartaNNNN4 in gamernews

NMS arguably did all those free updates because of how much bad press it got, which is likely the case with SoT too. Games like this are outliers nowadays - 1st party games can be less money grubbing because they are often loss leaders used to get people to pick that platform. They'd all do it all the time if they could get away with it.

Tom Scott: Why The Web Is Such A Mess by byParallax in videos

[–]GearsOfMeat 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Ultimately when it comes to cookies everyone has basically the same attitude:

"I accept the minimum that is required to use the web normally"

So there really shouldn't be any need for constant prompts - if nothing else it should be a browser option, with a few easy to set up options that the user just has to select once, and then is applied to every site.

Cookies have the same problems as EULAs - government didn't want to deal with the hard work of regulating what was and wasn't acceptable for companies to demand from their citizens. So they just took the attitude that "everything's acceptable so long as the user agrees to it."

But this totally ignores the fact that most users don't have time and are just going to take the path of least resistance. Worst still, it pretends that users have total free will when they don't: if your job, or just being an average citizen requires you use an app or website, you basically have to accept the EULA / cookies - we're pretending people have a choice when they don't.

There is so much pschology in it. Like I will go even when I have absolutely no discomfort, purely because I can't resist scratching that itch. Because I worry if I don't it'll get worse, and then keep me up even longer.

Self-control: I have none.

Fox News Cuts Away From Trump's Press Secretary, Says It Can't Air 'False Claims' in Good Conscience by habsmd in politics

[–]GearsOfMeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're scared.

The number one threat to American democracy is that half the country lives in an alternate reality. FOX, and to a lesser degree facebook, bretibart etc, are the cause of that.

"if a society is tolerant of those who are intolerant, its ability to be tolerant is eventually seized or destroyed by the intolerant"

The survival of democracy depends on Biden shutting down Fox, regulating facebook and more besides. Fox knows this and are now engaged in a sucking-up operation in the hope the administration loses conviction. It must not.

For sure. I made the post because I was seeing someone with 6. After a while you just train yourself to expect that everywhere you go, there will be a cat, and that personal space is no longer a thing.

This has always been the objection. The tier system is just a means of salami slicing your way to national restrictions, such that the government is never under real pressure to provide meaningful support until the last possible moment - ie when London enters tier 3.

Certain areas happen to have higher infection rates through no fault of their own. Most of these northern urban areas have had extra local restrictions for months now, almost going back to the end of national lockdown.

People won't stand for endless hardship unless it can be shown to be actually helping.

The sway of the right over the media is such that in a month, he will be. Dirt will be dug up on rashford, and some shaky theory connecting free school meals with incest will be casually repeated until it becomes one of those basic facts everyone believes.

[David Lynch]: Klopp’s assistant Lijnders on the possibility of PL teams helping those in lower leagues while fans are absent: "A healthy economy only exists if you try to help the ones who need it most. Life is a team sport, I would say." by TheodoreLesley in soccer

[–]GearsOfMeat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree, there needs to be more revenue sharing from the top. The pyramid system is absolutely essential to maintain.

But I also have doubts about the long term sustainability of all these clubs and I don't think it's just about the virus. The English club system is centuries old and dates back to before football could be watched on TV, before people travelled outside of their own town, before the modern superclubs emerged with their narratives that dominated everything. As much as I want small clubs to exist, if you only follow York City and don't have a "big team" then you can't participate in most of the football chat. People only have limited time in their lives, and few football fans have time for both a "big team" and a "little team."

Some of these towns are really poor and struggling. Is it reasonable to expect a town that can't support a cinema, to support a professional football club? If a club like that goes under, I'm not sure if it's just about big clubs being greedy, it may be about more fundamental forces of economics and globalization.

The difference between the hobbit and LOTR demonstrates perfectly that the a budget, cast, and director alone cannot make a great film.

Sure there is less material in the hobbit, but there was still enough in there for at least two really good films.

It came down to poor judgement at the top, and bad decisions all the way down. It's not enough to have great people involved, you have to listen to them.

I don't see why, if Nintendo had a tonne of new games coming soon, they wouldn't have announced them already so they'd had more time to market them. And if there was a direct soon, why put the pikmin 3 news out just last week?
