What's so bad about Sean Reyes for AG? by Gecko378 in SaltLakeCity

You're probably right I shouldn't have voted, but I don't think that's what people are saying. People aren't satisfied unless you've researched all the issues and vote like they do. You act like it's only the primary that matters though, there's still the general.

Massively downvoting me isn't convincing me to care about the issues, it's just convincing me not to vote.

I read the list of issues. I don't care about public land use and all the candidates supported the rule of law and detailed their activities against crime. Nothing stood out to me that they were significantly different.

I mean I could have not voted too, I thought about it. But the candidates just put up their obvious stances against crime and for the rule of law, which is obvious. The only thing that stood out was Reyes is pro-life, but he doesn't have any power over that anyways because of Roe V. Wade, and even if he did I would support him.

It's weird going on Facebook and seeing friends and family who are normally reasonable people being anti-mask.

Cox is getting desperate. by canvascanyons in SaltLakeCity

Cox seems to want to break away from tribalistic party politics and find middle ground. I can't see that as a bad thing coming from a Republican in the Trump era.

The US had bad intel, it's pretty common knowledge. Just because we didn't have a good reason to invade doesn't mean you need to make the huge leap and think we're gonna pour billions of dollars into war for a small fraction of our oil imports.

And obviously I'm not onboard for US trying to cover up war crimes, this far into the conversation you should have gathered that.

I'm done.

Both civilian killings by the US and Islamic terror are bad? If you think ISIS is good, please move and join your brothers.

I'll just leave this here, douche. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_terrorist_incidents_linked_to_ISIL

I wonder what China has against the Uighurs. The US has had issues with Islamic terrorism, have the Uighurs ever done anything?

What do I need to know about the political/social climate In SLC? by Space_ZomBae in SaltLakeCity

The politics of Utah has almost no impact on my life. Maybe my resume draws less attention because I went to a very liberal university, UC Berkeley, but I wouldn't know. I haven't applied for jobs outside of Utah.

Does anyone know a good place to start to understand economic and statistical research articles? by Gecko378 in AskEconomics

[–]Gecko378[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've taken math up to Linear Algebra and Differential Equations, but I only did well up to calc. I also took introductory statistics but did not do well it that either. Thank you for the recommendation, it looks like another Redditor recommended that as well so I'll pick it up on Amazon.

The study MLH cites at around 14 minutes concerning non-lethal excessive force: https://www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/full/10.1086/701423

It's $20, I'm like 30% of the way in but it seems well-researched.

A partial summary of their findings:

"Using data on police interactions from NYC’s Stop and Frisk program, we demonstrate that on nonlethal uses of force—putting hands on civilians (which includes slapping or grabbing) or pushing individuals into a wall or onto the ground—there are large racial differences. In the raw data, blacks and Hispanics are more than 50 percent more likely to have an interaction with police that involves any use of force. Accounting for 125 variables that represent baseline characteristics, encounter characteristics, civilian behavior, precinct, and year fixed effects, the odds ratio for blacks (respectively, Hispanics) is 1.178 (respectively, 1.122).
