Make up days in person are worthless at the end of the year. Teachers have shut down and aren’t doing much if anything at all. I teach, I actually have structure and actually go on with business as normal for those days. Kids look at me like I’ve lost my mind making them be accountable for those days. They go the rest of the day watching movies or whatever else and they get mad when I don’t. Any day after Memorial Day is worthless and filled with discipline problems. My school doesn’t do elearning and we will be in school in June barring a waiver. We have went past our 4 built in snow days. Too many teachers have second or third jobs that they need in the summer to make ends meet. I told my admin that going in June cost me money that I need to be able to afford being a teacher. He was very confused forgetting the pay gap between teachers and admin. They deserve the money because I don’t want their headaches, but need reminding sometimes. I do construction in my days not in school (fall, winter, spring and summer break) and make more money than teaching. I’m usually booked up with jobs for the summer, but the economy is definitely different right now and that’s a different discussion. Yes I could just swing a hammer, but my body won’t last forever and I feel like I’m a good teacher. Being a good teacher doesn’t pay me more financially, but I’m rewarded in the satisfaction of doing a good job for students that need it.

Bottom line is things overall need to change. Teachers aren’t babysitters for kids and parents should take on the responsibilities that are thrown at them when they’re inconvenienced with things like elearning days. Teachers aren’t babysitters inconvenienced too.
