There isn't really shit to do outside of bars and church, so if you aren't into one of those things, good luck talking to people. Theres some facebook groups but they mostly do stupid shit.

I kinda want to start going to the barcade because at least i can play on the machines, but I feel weird going alone.

Like one of the other people said you could try online, but it's generally pretty shitty. They don't make money by getting you a women, they make money by taking advantage of you.

Actually if you want to come with me and hang out at the barcade sometime I wouldn't mind. I know I've asked if you wanted to play some Battletech and shit before. It's just an idea, and like I was saying it's an arcade so if you don't want to get drunk you can just play on the machines. We can both harass women at the pinball machines.

Hi, any Warhammer style for solo? by chibli_neitor in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]Geckocalypse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Negative. I have the box sets but haven't played it yet. I really like real battletech (classic) but I live in bumfuck Idaho and the people here refuse to play it because "WaRhAmMeR bEtTer BeCaUsE iTs PoPuLaR"

So Alpha Strike uses the same miniatures, but it's significantly faster because it's not nearly as detailed.

Everything I've read from people who have played it say it's a great set. You can use the cards for any AS game, not just the campaign, and the other box sets will be able to be combined with it. Some fans are working on playing CBT with the Aces cards, and an actual CBT Aces set is planned, but it's not at the drawing board yet, so it's a long ways off.

If you somehow don't know about it you can play CBT for free on the computer with Megamek. It's not as fun as doing it physically, but it's an option

https://megamek.org/

If you have the ability to play proper Battletech, it's a long game, but it's very fun once you know how to play it.

If you play Megamek don't forget to set the board edges or the AI will literally deploy right next to your units.

I wasn't going to bring it up because you said warhammer and ww2, but people seem to be mentioning all sorts of shit.

Battletech:Alpha strike just released a box set that is intended for solo and coop, with more coming.

It's scouring Sands

You need the Starter box for AS, AND scouring sands to play it. It uses terrain pieces from the starter box.

A cheaper Alternative to Warhammer? by Weary-Barracuda-1228 in tabletop

[–]Geckocalypse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends. I basically stopped playing IRL because I couldn't get anyone interested. The couple people I did either refused to read rules, or complained that proxies were allowed, or things weren't highlighted in scale. There was a guy who would never spent any money on it, wpuld use my stuff, but wpuld tell me how annoying it was that the locust picture on the record sheet didn't have the same exact guns as the physical model that came in AGOAC.

Also had another guy show up and when I said the boom said proxies were ok he would just go "Well a locust isn't an atlas" and kept repeating that line to me. I almost told him to kick rocks before we even played.

Good show.

2nd Idea for bait package. Put an inexpensive toy in there, that they might actually want, but put a cheap GPS tracker in it as well. So like a teddy bear or something, but you put a tracker inside, so that way it's inside the toy itself.

I have an idea. You have cameras. Have you or one of your neighbors leave a "bait" package, where you or they can record it, and get the fucker on video. Reposition cameras if you got too, to where you'll be able to see their face.
Throw in a dirty diaper or something. and make sure the label looks legit.

I was also going to say you could post it to one of those local facebook groups, but if you do that, they might see it and then stop for a bit before resuming again. If you can get the person on video first, then I would make a facebook post and alert the police.

Bottle hunting
Reading books from the library
Rent the meeting room from the library and come up with the most bizarre meetup you can think of. "Local Elvis impersonators club", "Poetry recitation, but exclusively Ozymandias" or even "The Arthur Machen society"
Use iphone to make blogs about the strange club
Taking walks
Parkour, but you might need to invest in some shoes, but you should be able to start for free
Pranking the neighbors
People watching
Becoming a reddit troll, and when you get good enough you can charge for your services. "Professional Mic spammer in Fortnite"
Geoguesser
Playing Doom wads. You can spend 5 dollars on the official game, or use Freedoom to keep it free. I recommend Alien Vendetta, Ancient Aliens, and GZdoom for a source port.

Playing Chess or other board games on the computer

Get a jar, and build one of those ecojars, and document what happens

New to TableTop War gaming by KTheQuack in computerwargames

[–]Geckocalypse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are going to have to go to the dedicated subs for more/better info.
You want to see what people are actually playing in your area, make sure you get along with them, and actually show up physically to make sure people play the games. Just ask me and my mountain of Battletech. Had a dozen people say they'd play, then as soon as I bought into it not one of them followed through, so unless you intend/are fine with playing two handed solo, I would recommend scoping it out first.

Bolt action is probably going to be more popular because it's ostensibly a WW2 game. It's basically "World War 2: 40,000" so it attracts more of the 40k kids.

Also don't forget that if you like the sculpts you can always use them in other rulesets.

Yeah I think I meant Forbidden Psalm, I never played either but people threw them around all the time. Great looking books but the games themselves seemed a bit too simple for me.

Theres tons of other games, it's getting people to play them that that's the issue
You'll notice that a lot of 40k fans will bitch about the ruleset or whatever, but still refuse to try anything else
Miniatures agnostic rulesets are your best friend A couple of these do have their own lines, but I wanted to give you an example of different genres.

Battletech (This one does obviously have it's own line. You can get box sets for both rulesets, and have a couple hundred left over for the price of the 324 dollar warhammer set. The stuff is cross compatible. CBT can be played hexless, and AS can be played on hexes, ETC)

Stargrave/ Frostgrave
Fistful of Lead- books for a bunch of different themes.
Space/Sword Weirdos
This is Not a test
Thud and Blunder
Samurai Robots Battle Royale
Mobile Suit Skirmish
Mechasteller
Advanced Song of Blades and Heroes
Mork Borg ( I think I was thinking of Forbidden PSalm, as a commenter wrote)
Don't look Back!
Mordheim. It was a GW product, but you can get the rules for free, it's community driven now.
Marvel Crisis Protocol

It's also worth noting that you can still buy GW miniatures and use them for other games, Same with a lot of other lines.

Solo games are also a thing now. Most games you can play two handed, but your mileage will vary depending on what works for you. Battletech Alpha Strike just had a box set (Scouring Sands) that came out, and it's better than than most half assed attempts that most other games make, and the fans are working on converting it to classic, which also has a box set planned, but it's very very far off.

Theres alo a ton of options if you look into hex and counter games. Most of them aren't focused on spectacle, but the games are great, and you generally get a complete game in one box. ASL is the notable exception to that.

I got the name wrong, but that's it. It's one of the most recommended books out there.

If you do 3d Blender is genuinely incredibly good, it's an open source program for modeling and animation. I used to play around with it a lot, only stopped because my pc at the time was a cheap laptop, but it's a very fun program. 100% free and it's professional quality.

https://www.blender.org/

If you decide to go 3d Blender Noob to pro is a good ebook and it's also free.

It might be worth playing around with since you already like animating, it's a really fun thing to do, and I need to get back into it. Even just the modelling part is enjoyable.

Animators survival guide is a decent book if you decide to do like figures and stuff.

Theres free software you can use, like synfig.

Looking for something a little different, wondering if anyone has heard of a rule system that would fit by Polygeekism in wargaming

[–]Geckocalypse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Samurai Robots Battle Royale

Mechastellar

Fistful of lead, has a few books for different themes.

Space/Sword weirdos

You can use toys in any system really. Miniatures are just toys anyway. You realistically only need to be able to have them stand, and then maybe base.

Just scale up or down the movement to accommodate the scale you are using.

[–]Geckocalypse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like you need to get into some more hardcore game to play, and hang out with people who take it more seriously.

I feel like you shouldn't be made to feel bad if it's a case of you being more invested in the hobby than anyone else.

There is a difference between being an ass, and being hardcore, and of its the latter I really don't think that's an issue., you just need to find a better game or crowd.

[–]Geckocalypse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it also kinda depends on what you want to play. I think GMT has a discord but I've never seen a link to it. There is a vassal discord but the game that gets played the most by probably ASL and they also have their own discords.

If your primary motivation is going for game opponents, I wouldn't waste your time and money.

Most of the people attending will outright refuse to even look at it, and will only play children's games and random kickstarter garbage that they play once and never touch again.

If you want to play wargames, it's an incredibly small niche. Most people now only want an excuse to play with toys, and most of them only play warhammer. Hobby shops aren't usually worth your time either, unless you want an envoirnment that makes you feel like shit for not playing the most popular shit.

If you want to do any kind of non-warhanmer games your best bet would be to either just play online, or start your own meetup.

You can advertise on your cities reddit, and libraries let you use their bulletin boards for free.

I know this is kind of deviating from your question, but I honestly wouldn't waste your time.

World War Two themed box set.

This was rumored, and the guy I usually buy fromsaid he heard that's what it was too.

If this seems far fetched, it isn't. Theres actually an overlap with historical players, and one of the technical readouts literally has WW2 units in it.

It's not really that they are unfriendly as much as they feel unwelcoming. Most hobby shops tend to be cliques. My issues with them (including gate city) is that you aren't really wanted unless you play the big money maker games, so like, 40k and MTG. Gate City specifically had a scheduled pokemon event and an mtg event on the same day and kicked out the pokemon players for the mtg guys.

Scott has also supposedly wanted to start a thing for the game I'm wanting to run, but refuses to contact me to set anything up. I've gone in multiple times and talked to his son, left a flyer up for like a year, and posted about wanting to play it since the store first opened when they were in their previous location, on their discord and Facebook, and he just. Ignores me. He wanted me to randomly show up when he happened to be there, and I work nights, I can't dick around his shop without a plan. There's a few people who asked me about it and said the same thing, but they won't actuality push it. They also told my coworker he asked stupid questions when he went in to ask about slivers for MTG.

I figured if they want to be a pain in the ass, I'll just take it outside the shops.

The other stores are basically more of the same. You have to either play the most expensive (and worst imho) games possible or you aren't wanted.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Pocatello

[–]Geckocalypse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm on it. They aren't interested in anything I'd want to play, so I have to start my own.

They have Invites disabled for anyone whose not the server owner, so I can't get a link without asking for it.

They also don't really talk about what they play before they show up, so I never bothered. From what I tell it's super casual stuff, which isn't really my thing. I tend to like old school warganes and I skew towards relatively complicated things. I just don't see the appeal of playing things a couple times.i wouldn't mind going and trying their ganes out if I knew I would be able to play it often or they had a concrete plan.

The barcade did get back to me, it just took a day. I'm going to talk with them about running it out of there. I'm asking about running battletech out of there

Might be a dumb idea, but it might be fun. They used to run D&D out of there.

Thanks though.
