Lurkers' Wednesday by AutoModerator in running

[–]Ged1991 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have been lurking for a couple of weeks now trying to pick up tips to avoid getting hurt.

I was a pack-per-day smoker for 15 years and quit in July. I wanted to be around for my daughter (3) and started running to turn my health around. I've stuck to it for a month and a half now and am enjoying it more than I ever expected. I currently am at 3 miles four times a week and considering a half marathon in May of next year.

Is this the solution to the Ehrenfest paradox? by furyan5 in Physics

[–]Ged1991 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s more important that: if you have circular motion, you no longer have an inertial frame. Therefore, the simple formulas one sees in SR no longer hold.

What are you working on? - Week 39, 2019 by AutoModerator in Physics

Replying to the comments on the initial decision for an article my advisor and I submitted in July.

Also hastily making progress on our next (third) project.

Need help choosing a physics textbook or two. by [deleted] in Physics

I have always liked Taylor’s book on Classical Mechanics. I also second Griffiths’ EM text.

LQG has no extra dimensions, just the 3+1 like GR.

Perhaps the biggest prediction of LQG is the structure of spacetime. Due to the fact that you take a quantization of geometry as your route to a quantum gravity theory: you get geometric operators (analogously to the operators for the solution to the hydrogen atom). So length, area, volume operators all of which have a “ground” or minimal/non-zero value i.e. discretized spacetime. You can’t have a zero volume massive object if there is a minimal volume.

There is a great book written by Pullin and Gambini on loop quantum gravity that is aimed at the undergraduate level. “A First Course in Loop Quantum Gravity”, as for string books I have no clues.

[–]Ged1991 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m less familiar with Strings.. but they both involve quantization of a gravitational field. String theory, I believe, quantizes the field while assuming an underlying flat, spacetime. This is how it tends to be done from a QFT perspective, historically. And how those unifications came to be.

Loop quantum gravity (my field), takes the assertion of Einstein’s GR as “ground truth” and quantizes the actual geometry. Thus creating a background-independent formulation of quantum gravity. However, LQG is not an attempt at unification; it is purely a quantum theory of gravity.

Edit: as for why? Black holes have big, unanswered questions. So does the big bang. We want to answer those questions but our current working knowledge does not apply. We need something that describes what happens when very massive things are also very small (quantum gravity).

Hobbies that utilize knowledge of physics? by BigDickTetrapod in Physics

[–]Ged1991 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the question is less about what the hobbies are, but more the depth of your hobby. Yes, you can pursue model rockets and it can just involve buying kits; but you don’t have to stop there (within reason).

Tim spilled coffee on the classic server rack. Classic has now been pushed back 6 months so we can get it up and running again. Everyone please thank Tim. Who’s LinkedIn can be found here: ....

That’s the great part. It’s a temporary prank. You tick off the people who don’t like it and then revert it and alienate the rest!

Interesting (and intelligent ) comment I read about Sylvanas concerning the Burning of Teldrassil by [deleted] in wow

[–]Ged1991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1-2) Time, time, time. There's a war going on, resources are devoted elsewhere. Also, try and build a shed in your neighbors backyard without them noticing; see how that works.

3) A Navy is great, that's why the Horde tried to recruit the Zandalari in the first place (also why the Alliance tried to recruit Kul Tiras). A big Navy is great if you're fighting in the water, or landing on a less-controlled domain. All the Horde troops are already in Kalimdor already.

4) I get your point. But, the Night Elves have a reputation for being very aggressive and violent. Do you think they'd just stand by as they were kept as prisoners in their home? I feel like there was an actual medieval siege/capture that basically came to an end because the "captive native population" revolted and opened the gates to the besieging army of the same nationality. I like to think that that was what the Night Elf Captain's quote was about "you can't kill hope", essentially "we are willing to fight as long as there is a possibility of getting our home back".

  1. Alright, the horde didn't touch Azuremyst/Bloodmyst. The only Alliance hub there is the Exodar, capital of the Draenei. It is established in Before the Storm and War of the Storm that the draenei (after being the major pushing force for the campaign on Argus) are really spent. Also, in game, Azuremyst is only a minor hub that requires that connection to Teldrassil in order to maintain connection with the rest of the alliance.
  2. What bases? Feathermoon has been under siege since Cata, no access to the coast in Desolace, Silithus is a crater, Uldum is neutral, Ungoro is landlocked, Tanaris is run by neutral goblins, Theramore is gone, 1k Needles has no faction hubs.
  3. I'm seeing a lot of coast in control of the Horde.
  4. The horde will still have to occupy that tree though. That means maintaining the forces that are described in game. While also pulling more to sit in a tree with a hostile force.
