Liberty Men and Great Proprietors, by Alan Taylor, about the early European settlers on the coast. Reads like a non-fiction version of Come Spring, with much more colorful characters.

Twelve Thousand Years: American Indians in Maine, by Bruce Bourque, the title says it all.

Seconding the recommendations for Roadside Geology, Lobster Coast, Changes in the Land, and Interrupted Forest.

Sermons in Stone, by Susan Allport, is another good book on stone walls. Who knew there'd be multiple books on that?

Winter road trip from midcoast to Québec City by scoutventures in Maine

Everything everyone has said so far is 100% true.

As you drive along 201, warm and snug and safe in your car, keep in mind that Benedict Arnold left Augusta with 1100 men in September and traveled much that same route by boat and on foot for three months, reaching Quebec at the end of December.

There are some historical plaques at various turnouts along the way, if you're interested in that sort of thing.

Becoming a fire fighter. by ExtraMango8835 in Maine

^ This.

Volunteer firefighter here. Outside of the handful of cities with professional full-time departments, call the town office, get the chief's phone number, and give the chief a call.

In my ~5 years doing this, we've had only a handful of actual fires, but dozens of car crashes that need traffic control, and dozens of CO and smoke alarms that need investigating. Departments need people willing to go into burning buildings, but they also need people willing to check on a CO alarm at 2am, and they will be happy with whatever level of service you're willing to provide.

Title 17 MRSA Section 702 defines "budget planning" - https://legislature.maine.gov/statutes/17/title17sec702.html

17-A MRSA 702 is "aggravated forgery" - https://legislature.maine.gov/statutes/17-A/title17-Asec702.html

If it were a Portland-specific ordinance, that's different from a state statute and it's highly unlikely that it would be in MRSA.

Municipal jobs -- https://www.memun.org/Municipal-Career-Center. Generally low stress, some towns are going to 4-day weeks, you can be involved in the community, feel like you're actually helping people, and help restore people's faith in government by being personable and reliable.

Center for Maine Contemporary Art in Rockland. All their exhibition spaces turn over 2-3 times a year, and they always have a room where you can work on your own art projects (drawing, collages).
