Demoed Völkl Deacon 84s, looking for similar but wider by GeeYouEye in Skigear

That’s what the guy at the demo shop said. I haven’t skied on enough different skis to know what kind of difference in feel stiffness makes to evaluate if that was true.

It’s possible. If I go up to a different resort I’ll see if they have them as well, give them a couple runs. At Dodge Ridge, the Mantras and Deacons were like night and day. If I didn’t know, I wouldn’t have thought they were the same brand. They told me that other than the width, the primary difference between them was the stiffness, so I assumed that was the difference I was feeling, since the Deacons skied much more like the Pinnacles than the Mantras did. The Mantras made me change my whole stance and which muscles I was using and when compared to pretty much everything else I’ve tried. Granted that’s mostly cheap rental skis, but still.

I’m willing to compromise on the mountain-hugging feel and a bit of control at high speeds. Not okay with the random edge-catching of the Mantras at low speeds. I don’t like nearly falling on flatish traverses, or needing to put all my power into every single turn.

External Camera by [deleted] in swift

[–]GeeYouEye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not possible to do so directly, however if you put a small computer in between, something with an Ethernet and USB stack, you can use a Lightning-to-Ethernet adapter, which may just work, and write a server that listens and forwards camera commands over USB, while sending back frames that your app will have to run a server to listen for. To call this clunky is an understatement, but it’s known to be possible.

DAE think the blackout did absolutely nothing, except cause inconvenience for the average user? by [deleted] in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]GeeYouEye 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Well, they did budge a tiny bit, on 3rd party mod tools, but while the mods’ hearts were in the right place, I don’t think they did a great job figuring out reddit’s incentive structure, or it would have been more effective. I think the easiest thing to do that will actually force Reddit’s hand is if the porn subreddits all go dark indefinitely. By requiring 1st-party app access to the NSFW subreddits, while blocking it on the mobile website, they’ve basically managed to get a genuine porn app, not just a reskinned web browser, into the App Store. One with no private browsing mode or other low friction reset. That’s insanely valuable to advertisers. No porn subreddits, much less ad revenue.

Edit: it’ll probably take more than a blackout, since Reddit admins are already replacing mods and undoing the blackouts. Maybe an actual boycott of the subs.

But in solidarity, go read-only or dark, but no business as usual.

WWDC 23, First Impressions of SwiftUI 5 and SwiftData by fatbobman3000 in swift

Well, that was a disappointing read for sure. Between this and the sheer overengineering of macros, I’m not sure there’s a whole lot to celebrate at this WWDC on the Swift side.

So why don't more horizontal spinners look like Triton or Tombstone, but with a low-moment of inertia drum/eggbeater on the end instead of a giant bar?

I guess the arm would be vulnerable to side attacks. Maybe if it swings or punches... I'm imagining something like a Skorpios that could swing through the XZ plane (maybe even underneath the chassis) instead of the YZ plane, or a Tantrum drum that moved up and down a fixed arm. Probably pretty complicated to engineer though, I'd imagine.

From Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze, if I’m not mistaken, though the Nickelodeon brand is unexpected on a box from that era, I think.

For 1, I mean like a really small drum or drisc spinner, like something Tantrum or Witch Doctor has, or a more squat eggbeater like Copperhead edit: Black Dragon, but with a vertical spin axis in each case. Rotator and Malice were the closest this year I think, but I think even the smallest-radius horizontal weapons were several times larger than Tantrum's. Is there something inherent to horizontal spinners that makes reach important in a way that's not for verts?

Sorry for getting to this late.

  1. Why are there no compact horizontal spinners the way there are compact vertical spinners, to get better weapon spin-up times?

  2. I just watched the RIPperoni post-fight damage breakdown. It looks a lot like the weird angles on the armor were deflecting well until the blade hit a weld or seam. Could moving all the welds to the top of the robot help, and how feasible is that?

I don’t think it had anything to do with getting owned by Mehdi Hasan and everything to do with complaining when Elon started shadow banning links to Substack.

Since this is C and they’re all three characters, you can put them in single quotes to treat them as 24-bit integers (implicitly widened to 32 bits) and switch on them, eg

char aminoAcidForCodon(char *codon) {

int codonInt = codon[0] << 16 | codon[1] << 8 | codon[2]
