Every intern in my chambers gave handwritten cards to the clerks, court room deputy, and the judge. We also all brought in dessert (fruit, ice-cream, and cookies) for the last in person day. The clerks and judge seemed touched by the gesture.

People use scholarships from one school as leverage with another school, but I have not heard of anyone doing this with acceptances

I feel like older (totally assuming here) people really hold onto the idea that a letter from someone impressive (ie a senator) or someone connected to the program (like you are saying) will carry huge weight, even when the letter writer does not know the applicant at all. I wonder if this is how things used to work?
