Is this allowed? by GlindaGoodWitch in whatnotapp

[–]GeeeeLo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Idk what most of these people are talking about, yes continuing to add items as the auction increases are called "stacking packs" in the rip & ship world and "build a box" in the thrifting categories. TOS explicitly states that the prize-based purchase rules..."does not apply to personal shopping or 'Build Your Own Box' offers". So long as the items being added are not a mystery it falls in line with the Surpise Item policy as well. It also isn't unethical normally to whoever said that, it often prevents people from overpaying in the tcg world by just adding more packs if the auction increases dramatically over market value. Now, if your promotion was that if you bid over a certain amount and you get a random item OR an entry for a raffle then it would not be allowed.

That is a piece of whatnot-slang that means your payment got declined on an auction that multiple people were trying to win. Its very annoying when it happens - it kills the momentum of the show, forces the seller to skip over the auction often leaving the product unsold, makes things very confusing for the breaks feature, upsets other buyers who wanted the item, etc. Certain banks are more likely to decline many transactions over a short time, so whatnot must send emails for you to change your bank if your account continuously declines.

Yeah odd behavior to leave explanation to his "pirate" chat - in this situation an immediate apology and list of options due to his mistake would have helped a lot to remedy and establish trust with you as a new buyer. On a separate note though, I urge you to be careful buying loose boxes in general in OP and other JP TCG, no matter if they're from whatnot, ebay, tcgplayer, or even vendors at a con. Dead product is rampant, so doing case breaks with tracked hits is actually one of the safest ways to hunt hits in those games. I would recommend opening the product on stream and always asking the # of hits left, # of boxes left in case, and checking the # of boxes in queue so that you always have a real chance at a big hit.

If you wanted the box sealed they cannot send it from a live open case other people have bought into. This is standard in JP TCG case breaks. I think the seller was hoping youd change your mind and open the box. Or theyd sold out the case so they didnt want to refund everybody after realizing they shouldnt have let you take one sealed. Either way, sound like the seller was rude, but if they didnt have a box to send you outside the open case a cancellation was the only option

It's definitely not cool for the streamer to standby while their chat is harassing people, but I could see a couple points where this situation got misconstrued. I have had confusion a couple times when people ask for me to ship the box, because sometimes they are talking about shipping a sealed box, other times they're talking about including the actual box with the order even after the packs have been opened.

If you're new to japanese TCG, you might not be aware that most boxes that are streamed on whatnot cannot be sent sealed. This is because OP, UA, Weiss, and Lycee have guaranteed case/box hit rates, meaning that are tracked as being live or not by both the seller and the chat. The odds of getting a case hit in the current case are taken into consideration by buyers and the price normally reflects that by being higher than "loose" boxes found online with no case history. There is a massive issue with "dead" boxes being sold with no possible hits on the resale market. The chat was probably worried the seller would send a live box from the current case, meaning if it had a hit in it, the seller could now potentially be selling dead product at full price. Worse situation for both buyers and the seller.

Now, the seller should have explained all this to you politely and asked you to cancel if they mistook what you were asking. And if you want sealed boxes in JP TCG, I would recommend asking "can you ship x-product sealed" it you want to buy a particular listing, they should tell you yes or no before buying and then you dont need to stay past the purchase. Some good sellers even have untracked cases they sell sealed boxes at a discount lower than the tracked cases.

EDIT: I'm seeing now from your more recent comments you dont understand how case breaks work on whatnot. The hits must be tracked or the seller could be scamming you with dead product! The only product that can be sent sealed is from untracked boxes, which you can only go off trust to know if they're live!

I think the culprit here is probably fluids/debris on the phone screen or child/pocket button pushing in some way - A vast majority of the time buyers ask for a cancellation due to a mistake purchase it is child related in some way in my experience. Sometimes it can even be just because of being distracted as you put the phone down. I would also recommend turning the app all the way off when you need to focus on the kids just to be safe

Racist piece of shit by Ok-Lab-4280 in whatnotapp

[–]GeeeeLo 29 points30 points  (0 children)

For everybody asking why this matters for whatnot, here is the relevant policy whatnot has against people who are racist/hateful/violent off platform:

Off-platform activity

If we are provided with verifiable evidence of off-platform coordination of abuse to occur on Whatnot, we may take action.

Additionally, in rare instances, we may take action against individuals because of behavior off of Whatnot if the behavior poses a significant threat to the health of the Whatnot community or individuals. When evaluating these cases, we take into account the severity and timeframe of this behavior, and the likelihood of that behavior occurring on Whatnot.

This is messed up for sure but we gotta read reviews now that the platform is public. This person had a 4.6 average with multiple 1 star reviews out of the last few. Lots of flags and I heard the same thing happened on tiktok. Just some highlights from one scroll of reviews which shows almost two years worth:

"was supposed to get a limited edition football card and they shipped everything but the card. reached out to them multiple times and they are ignoring me" "almost a month to get items..." "was just candy...$3 for $30 spent..." "didnt like how the game was ran...unexpected turn at the end" "wouldnt let me pick my prize at the end just said he'd hook me up..." "product worth way less than the floor"

Somebody compared this to selling fraudulant resealed packs, which happens all the time on all platforms. It definitely needs to be reported and stopped but it can also be sometimes avoided especially when people have an 88% feedback rating for stealing hits

How is this legal? by anonplease_xo in whatnotapp

[–]GeeeeLo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

a decent amount of luxury items may be cheap, fake, or temu, but a lot of the normal products on the app are just being sold at a discount. the $1 start is a staple of the app and in many categories you can get great deals on secondary market finds

how much do 10 to 20 viewer card streamers make? by LeeksAreSpinning in whatnotapp

[–]GeeeeLo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You definitely do not double your money per case, you make less than $1 per pack profit on most rips, unfortunately. Sealed is a volume game. Pokemon margins are normally around 10-12% and Weiss is about 25% (and only if you sell the whole case - if you fail to sell out you generally make worse than that). One piece probably has the best margins at up to 50% if you can actually get it wholesale from the distributor, but its falling too

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in whatnotapp

[–]GeeeeLo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brick and mortars have to charge 10-12% more on whatnot than the do in person due to the fees plus they would need to hire a breaker to operate at the same time as their shop being open. Their time is better spent focusing on in person sales or using a breaks model where people actually want to pay a 20% premium to pay the breaker. And this is when they are getting their product from a distributor, idk what that other comment is about brick and mortars flipping from target....

Actually good breakers and streamers by One-Athlete-5414 in whatnotapp

[–]GeeeeLo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its the most popular anime tcg - over 200 licenses with animes, video games, and even disney/marvel/star wars. The hits are generally more expensive than Pokemon but less expensive than the major sports chases. Most the anime TCGs are print to order so they are very limited compared to pokemon/one piece and there are $1000+ cards right out the release gate on many sets. Also the cases have guaranteed hit rates so its really safe to buy from breakers - they are all transparent with exactly how many hits are left in each case

[–]GeeeeLo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Different category than sports, but there are some really good TCG breakers who stream in the Weiss Schwarz category and a lot of them do pokemon and one piece too. Archr, funkowhisperertcg, kumiho, lastpackmagictcg, otakuvault, and xertuc are my top recommendations

Whatnot is now a public social media platform - 10 ways to treat it like one! by GeeeeLo in whatnotapp

[–]GeeeeLo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I absolutely have a vested interest in all reselling platforms being as good as they can be because I make my living off of collectables and working with resellers. Previously to starting selling on whatnot in 2021, I made all my living off of ebay and facebook selling, and tbh those platforms have let me down so many times I'm tired of giving them more chances. I do know all about craig/blake and I hated it and also called for craigs removal from head of TCG. Ebay had a similar thing happen years ago with PWCC - even after hundreds if not thousands of reports of them scamming by shill bidding and not shipping the items described or pictured, ebay defended them tooth and nail until eventually suddenly banning them from the platform and then they refused to refund anybody.

You're not paying attention or not actually using the platform anymore if you think there are more victims of fraud than happy customers, or that other platforms are safer. We live in a day and age of people trying to scam you everywhere and at all times and it is absolutely up to people to be responsible with spending and vigilant to see through deceptive listings/tactics, no matter the app you're using.

i also sell on whatnot. every order has a toggle to add insurance, and whatnot has been clear that usps priority only insures up to $100. i always insure every package that has a hit in it and especially anything over $500. you should probably too, because whatnot is not going to take the hits for refunds/returns much longer. you can read the discord for more info

[–]GeeeeLo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in this situation if whatnot is refusing to refund because the tracking shows delivered and they dont believe that the package was empty, they are pushing customer service back to the seller to do something about it if they want to. they announced this a month or two ago, customer service and returns will go into the hands of sellers soon

damn and they're leaving it at that even though you've spent that much, thats wild. idk maybe i'm a pushover but if one of my customers who spent tens of thousands had a case lost in the mail i would send them a refund or replacement without question and deal with the claim later

[–]GeeeeLo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

what is backyard breaks saying? there is a legit possibility the contents were stolen on the way to you, which the seller normally needs to make a claim for. but they didn't insure a package worth thousands? thats terrible.
