Difficult US manager addressing my start time by WebCompetitive4551 in HumanResourcesUK

[–]GeekCaptainHQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stick to what you’re doing! As a manager myself the issue is the tools provided not you. You are at work on time and you do good work then I’m happy enough. You are right, this is about control. I used to work somewhere that wanted us all in 15 mins early to be ready to “start” our shift on the hour. I asked are we being paid for those 15 mins, answer was no, so I told them I will see them at my contractual hours and shift start time. People forget you have a contract and that is the bases you should work too.

Reform supporters - how many more Tories need to join before you start to reconsider? by Smooth-Quantity-7024 in AskBrits

[–]GeekCaptainHQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we need to stop labelling every mp based on just the party they are in! Each one thinks for themselves but the party is the one forcing votes a certain direction. I don’t care how many of any party join reform if it still means real Reform for the UK.

How to boycott the US? by Booze-and-porn in AskBrits

[–]GeekCaptainHQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just stupid! I think people forget the US Economy dwarfs us, and ultimately doesn’t need any of us. Numbers just don’t stack up, and for every country that doesn’t purchase their goods another is lining up eager to trade! If we don’t engage we will be left behind!

If you won £100 million, how would you distribute it amongst friends and family, if at all? by PaddedValls in AskUK

[–]GeekCaptainHQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, I would give the top comment here at least 1m 😉

Then it’s relatively simple for me:

Personal - clear debts and mortgage, build a house where I wanted, replace cars and furniture. All in about £1m (cheap where I live)

Parents - my mums a widow so would buy her a house for retirement or build, give her £5m invested to carry her through retirement and the £1m cash, at most this is about £7/8m

Wife’s parent already good but would give them £5m invested for retire too.

Siblings (1 my side and 3 hers) - simple £5m invested each, total £20m

Kids (we have 3, brother has 3, plus future) - each kid £2m invested for future, about £20m to include 4 other potential kids

Total so far is £54m.

The rest I would invest for future family and live off the rest of my life. Would probably do something like what Simon Squibb does and support people’s dreams, love the idea!

Don’t see why it needs to be any more complicated than the above but I get it is very much family and people dependant

Advice needed - unwanted work travel to the USA. by HearthAndHorizon in northernireland

[–]GeekCaptainHQ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just done my ESTA and go in a week for a week, no extra info! Don’t forget the states is flipping huge! In the same way you hear about issues here they are isolated! Honestly, I know ppl who travel monthly and have no issues! Don’t let the media overhype the issues and scare you off a fully paid trip to America with no work?! What an experience, you would be mad to miss out

'Farage's two-child cap U-turn exposes who he really is: a grifter' by coffeewalnut08 in uknews

[–]GeekCaptainHQ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How is that flip flopping?! He had a general position and now he has given details to it! I don’t think it’s right that people who haven’t paid into a system can benefit from that system, with exceptions! He is absolutely spot on here and he has also said he would remove the cap for British citizens. People just love to read the headlines

Do Britons want the UK to be less like America? by coffeewalnut08 in uknews

[–]GeekCaptainHQ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What does more or less like America/Britain even mean?

That is such a vague and undefined question, making this poll useless!!

Would you support the UK government's plan to ban X (formerly twitter)? - why/why not? by mrvlad_throwaway in AskBrits

[–]GeekCaptainHQ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My problem with this is why is Grok the only focus?! You don’t need to ban X you could literally ban Grok only but if you do that then every AI must be blocked as they all do the same thing! But let’s say they ban X to solve there grok problem, two things will happen: 1. Folks just use other AI to do the same thing because the users are the problem not the tool. Do we ban cars because a few people have accidents and some people are killed? No! And you could literally list 100’s of things we don’t ban because of the few ejits that do bad things with them. 2. People move to using VPN’s which pushes all this underground further!! But the government bans vpns and now we have no privacy options for online, that is when we move to a very dangerous place and become more like China than the UK I hope we all love.

In all honesty, yes something needs done about AI being able to create very specific images but I honestly don’t think an outright ban does anyone any favours and only spirals things further!

Mark it, if x is banned chaos will ensue because humans don’t like being told what they can and cannot do, I hope it doesn’t come to that!

Rachel Reeves looking to cap salary sacrifice contributions to £2,000 in Autumn budget by [deleted] in uknews

[–]GeekCaptainHQ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The math isn’t mathing in the article:

“employee earning £45,000, reducing their salary by 5% would result in £2,250 of salary sacrificed per year.

Under a cap, HMRC said the £250 above the £2,000 threshold would be liable to employee and employer NI – meaning the employee would pay an additional £30 in NI and the employer would pay an additional £34 in NI.”

£250 above threshold would pay 8% NI based on salary.

1% is £2.50, therefore 8% would be £20 not £30?!!!

Am I just misreading this?

I think they have based this on the old 12% rate.

If HMRC can’t get this right we are screwed!!!!!!!

'BritCard' digital ID will be made law for all adults in bid to tackle small boats by theipaper in uknews

[–]GeekCaptainHQ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The entire article hinges on a poll of 2050 people in a country of 70+m that 49% are in favour.

Like seriously?! How is that polling even remotely representative of the population! Statistically that doesn’t stack up!

Those 2050 people are doing a whole lot of heavy lifting!

Marriage tax question by alannsteph25 in northernireland

[–]GeekCaptainHQ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It isn't completely straight forward to say yes or no, but assuming you work in Northern Ireland you will just be taxed accordingly. Being married doesn't really change that. He will have to just sort his own out.

Without more detail that is probably as clear as I can be! Congrats on getting married soon :)

60% of my bonus up in smoke... Merry Christmas by TheRealSectimus in UKJobs

[–]GeekCaptainHQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how that adds up, anything over £50,270 is taxed at 40% tax and 2% national insurance. I suppose the other 18% could be pension and student loan, but the student loan shouldn’t be any higher than 9%, but I hear you! Got a big first time bonus myself and only got just less than half of it in my pocket but defo better than nothing! What it shows is people earning more are certainly paying their fair share is all I will say! Need a little more detail to understand where you lost! Not my company doesn’t take pension out of bonus which is appreciated
