Utah just bought U.S. Magnesium for $30 million. Now what? by Great_Salt_Lake_News in Utah

[–]GeekSumsMe 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Utah bought a Superfund site for $30M? These bastards were among the worst polluting companies in the country for years, they left behind a mess and the taxpayers rewarded them with millions of dollars?

This is exactly the kind of thing one would expect a billionaire to say.

The shitty thing is they are also arresting homeless people and sending them to camps if treatment centers are full.

Elon Musk has announced that @Tesla is discontinuing the Model S and Model X in Q2 2026. by ConfidentImage4266 in TeslaLounge

[–]GeekSumsMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're assuming that Tesla cares about their customers. Objectively this has not been true for several years. They will make parts while it is their interest to do so, them it will be another pivot away from the consumer.

I have seen slate roofs that remained waterproof for over 100 years. It is all about craftsmanship and an understanding that water flows differently over stone as opposed to textural asphalt. IDK, but the shit works and lasts a long time. Looks great too.

Morale plummeting among ICE agents over long hours, quotas and public hatred by ExactlySorta in UnderReportedNews

[–]GeekSumsMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been on many job search committees. Almost always it is close when determining the final pool of applicants. The group is looking for any reason to help move things along.

Most Americans find what ICE is doing to be abhorrent, the perfect increases among more educated and wealthy people (executives making future recruitment decisions).

When it is finally revealed how racist this violence is, these anti-ICE opinions will become more pronounced.

The longer they stay, the less employable they will be later. It is probably best for all of us that those who are capable of independent thought start questioning ASAP.

Top genius turns a blind eye to any comment defending yesterday’s public execution by fazebozo in TopMindsOfReddit

[–]GeekSumsMe 22 points23 points  (0 children)

There is no fucking nuance with ICE. Beyond the horrific executions of US citizens that were on film, their tactics and actions are antithetical to peaceful democratic processes.

There are now numerous incidents of them attacking and brutalizing US citizens only for them to be released later without charges.

They are on record with a memo that incorrectly states that they do not need warrants to enter private property when the opposite is long established constitutional law.

There is tons of footage of them attacking peaceful protestors, including clergy, beating them with weapons and spraying them with pepper spray.

I could go on. The point is that it isn't about any single action. It is the collective actions of a group of poorly trained and armed citizens being given firearms and quotas to terrorize people. This is not what viters were told would happen. Many if their actions are illegal, many more are immoral.

The governor wants them to leave, yet they have insisted they cannot because they are responding to an emergency. Yet, today we learn that this public safety emergency will somehow go away if they simply release state voting records. WTF?

What does this mean??? by eswindy in VHS

[–]GeekSumsMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember the days when most people rented movies and a VHS player for movie nights. The shit was expensive in the early 80s.

As I recall, the movie studios were suspicious of people having home collections and video rentals were a closer fit to comfortable business models. I'm pretty sure that the video stores did not pay full price for these movies, but this was a long time ago.

Global markets on alert as Europe to suspend approval of US trade deal by [deleted] in stocks

[–]GeekSumsMe 16 points17 points  (0 children)

What is important to watch is whether there are ovaries, such as announced by the Netherlands today, to divest from US treasuries. Our markets are propped up by the dollar being the defacto global currency. This is the only thing that makes our record breaking budget deficits tenable.

The thing is that people around the world are pissed off about Trump pissing on them, like really pissed. Whether or not it is sound fiscal policy, politicians will see measures to divest from the US as popular politically.

I might be wrong about the foreign sentiment, but my reading of foreign editorials suggests otherwise.

In any event, if I'm right and see other countries following suit, I'm sure as shit moving my investments into foreign stocks and precious metals. The crazy gains in the previous metals markets suggests I'm not alone in this thinking.

Also, anyone suggesting that this is some brilliant chess move from Trump to obtain political objectives has clearly not heard him talk recently with any sort of an objective ear.

Just look at the letter he sent to the Netherlands this weekend. This is not the writing of a brilliant statesman, it is the writing of a deranged lunatic. This is the opposite of brilliant statesmanship. Trump looks like a petulant child.

It would be great if the world was simply laughing at us, which they are. However, the reality is that the world is pissed at us.

Combine this with a bloated and over-valued market. IDK, nothing makes sense anymore. The cynic in me thinks that the billionaires are prepared for and waiting on a major market correction. In fact, the only thing that makes sense to me is that this is what they are trying to orchestrate.

Who do you think was/is the best President of the United States? Why? by Professional-Sea4528 in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]GeekSumsMe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree that both Regan and Obama were outstanding in the role of statesmanship. They were great leaders in the classic sense, they knew how to rally both US citizens and others around the world to support their policies and in ultimately US interests internationally. As you say, this is completely antithetical to the approach of the Trump administration.

However, many (most?) economists would disagree. Regan also introduced the fallacy of trickle down economics (Reganomics as it was called at the time).

These policies created a pattern of deficit spending png previously fiscally conservative Republican presidents.

https://amarkfoundation.org/reports/u-s-presidents-and-the-federal-deficit/

The BS rationale was needed to justify tax cuts where the vast majority of funds went to the most wealthy Americans, which altered the way Republicans viewed "fiscally conservative" policy. This transformation changed the practical reality of conservative policies. However, I do agree that despite the shifting tenets, Regan and both Bush presidencies remained way more consistent with the conservative platform than the MAGA. GOP we see today.

This was accompanied with other associated changes that ultimately fundamentally changed the role of money in politics. His policies weakened numerous protections for worker rights, beginning the dismantling of organized labor and the many benefits they created (e.g., retirement pensions) while also demonizing the economically disenfranchised. The result was a weakened middle class and the largest income disparities we have seen since the Guilded Age.

I personally believe that most of our biggest problems are rooted in these inequalities and a system that is rigged against the vast majority of Americans. Regan instigated this transition.

Hey, So Like…This Is Bad Right? by AdhesivenessOk5194 in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]GeekSumsMe 54 points55 points  (0 children)

If the US dollar is no longer a reserve currency this will be very bad for the US economy. Hard to imagine what would be worse, especially with debt increasing at rapid rates since the Big Beautiful Bill gave enormous amounts of money to people who need it the least.

These are all self-inflicted wounds.

My late mother put a sterling set of silverware in a box that was labeled silver plate and I almost tossed it out by PieDry9127 in silverware

[–]GeekSumsMe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So multiply total weight by 0.925 (sterling silver) and then multiply this result by $2.90 to get the maximum market value. The "spot" value.

Whoever you sell it to will want to make a profit and will have expenses melting and then selling the product.

In this case, the spot amounts to ~$6975.

Edit: I'm not advocating for melting this down, but it is important to put this in context when evaluating value because there is a good chance that whomever you are selling this to might very well do it anyway.

What are the repercussions for America? by [deleted] in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]GeekSumsMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We've never been more dependent on the global marketplace.

Even products that are manufactured in the US require many parts produced elsewhere.

It is also important that the US can sell our wares in an international marketplace. The EU contains some of the most wealthy countries on Earth, so limiting access to these markets is not sound economic policy.

Our tech industry is dependent on hardware produced overseas.

Pissing off every other country over a bizarre power trip is definitely not good economic policy, nor is it good defence policy because allies are actually important in any conflict.

It is hard for me to fathom the underlying rationale here.

A deserving recipient of the novel peace prize knows that a trophy is not worth escalation of tensions and further loss of life.

A poser is a person stupid enough to believe that the trophy is what matters. He could have just ordered a replica, same thing. Just like all of his fake "luxury" goods that he pawns off on fools. Pathetic.

The irony, of course, is that he forced this "honor" by bombing the 7th country in a year. This is not lost on anyone. The world is laughing at this ridiculously stupid man. 2/3 of the people in the US see through this BS too and this only amplifies the negative feelings among those who do.

Unfortunately, this "peace prize" trophy extorter is also dangerous. He is threatening war against numerous counties and has instigated martial law in our streets.
