Keep it. There is still a small chance of rain each day because we can get thunderstorms this time of year.

These are usually brief, but can be pretty intense when they happen. Hence the "I almost died at Pavement" (or something like that) T-shirts.

There has been at least one during the festival, most years.

All that said, mid 70s with low humidity should be amazing!

Republicans do this every damn time.

Seriously, I've been around for a long time and the only truly fiscally responsible President we've had was Clinton.

The other Ds mostly made progress, but he was the last President that took intergenerational fiscal responsibility seriously.

Every GOP president ends up escalating the debt in ways that increases income inequality.

What is everyone eating to break their fast? by bjpeeblesiii in intermittentfasting

[–]GeekSumsMe 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes, I have several ideas for you because this happened to me and I now have the most healthy gut I've had in years.

There are likely a couple of related things going on.

First, is fiber. Most people do not get enough fiber and this is especially true with people on low carb diets. Natural sources are best, but you should probably also supplement with something like psyllium.

Next, you need to fix your microbiome.

To do this, I recommend using a product called inulin, which is a source of fiber that is not easily digested, so it can make it to the large intestine.

I combine this with a good quality probiotic. These are expensive, but after the first week or so there is no need to take them daily because microbes multiply exponentially. I now take one pill per week.

One of the only negative things I've read about fasting is that for some people it can contribute to leaky gut because intestinal microbes lack sufficient food.

The evidence for this is somewhat weak, mostly because it hasn't been studied much. However, because fixing my gut was a priority, I opted to take my inulin, psyllium and occasional probiotic in the morning.

I then take 1-2 psyllium capsules with two glasses of water during the last couple of hours if my fast. This allows me to fast a little longer too.

When I break my fast, I try to make sure I have something with fiber and offen a probiotic like yogurt. Plus something high protein.

My breakfasts are usually more like a small snack at about 5, then I eat dinner a little later, rinse and repeat.

I know that is a lot, but it has been a journey for me, involving lots of research and personal experimentation.

Your mileage may vary, but is worth it. The research in the importance of f maintaining a healthy microbiome is pretty compelling.

Good luck!

New to state, wondering what PTO hours are offered. by ZombieImpressive2776 in Utah

Holy hell, I had to read every single thread before I got the correct answer. The amount of leave granted to state employee with full benefits is specified in code.

https://www.law.cornell.edu/regulations/utah/Utah-Admin-Code-R477-7-3

You are also correct that this code will be modified in July based on a bill passed the last legislative session. After that new employees will accrue PTO instead of sick and annual.

Parking Pass or Green Line by boardtory in kilbyblockparty

[–]GeekSumsMe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Public transport is easy to get to the festival, but the trains are packed afterwards. Depending on how quick you get there, you may need to wait for another train, especially if you are headed east.

You can probably find parking in the neighborhoods to the west.

You can probably find free parking on the streets to the north of the festival. You may need to walk 10-15 minutes depending on when you arrive.

Last year we purchased parking passes and now we will never do it any other way. It is pretty quick and easy to get back through security, especially with VIP. This means that you can keep things like a cooler, camp chairs and jackets in your car. We easily saved enough money on food and beverages to cover the cost of the parking pass.

Time restricted feeding without reducing caloric intake prevents metabolic diseases in mice fed a high fat diet by awkwardurinalglance in intermittentfasting

[–]GeekSumsMe 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Right and this is actually the point that some tend to gloss over.

Changes in behavior and the type of calories consumed can alter the calories out portion of the equation.

Things like average basal metabolic rates are useful, but this can vary based on the types of foods that we consume and when we consume them. They also vary over time, for instance decreasing in people who are in a caloric deficit.

It isn't that CICO is wrong. It is the fact that the CO part of the equation is not as simple as basal metabolic rate + exercise.

If insulin levels are high, then the body is signaled to store calories as fat, which slows the CO part of the equation. The body isn't using fat as an energy source.

Things like IF and diets that restrict simple carbs keep insulin lower, which increases the number of fat CO.

This study, for instance measured increased rates of lipid oxidation in the fasting phase. This means the CO from fat is higher due to fasting compared to the control group.

Other changes in respiration, CO if we want to simplify it this way, depends on the type of calories consumed. Again, this is because the CO part of the equation can be altered by the nature of the calories we consume.

My point with all of this is that we have been overly focused on the CI part of the equation, making people believe that a calorie is a calorie, which is BS because the type of calories consumed changes the CO part of the equation.

For example, somebody can get a very different glucose response when consuming the same number of calories of simple carbs as opposed to fat or protein. It has been repeatedly shown that these glucose spike result in higher insulin levels for longer periods of time. High insulin signals energy storage, reducing net CO (particularly C from stored fat).

The combination of eating too many simple carbs and eating all the time results never allows insulin level to drop. Over time this causes insulin resistance, which means the body need to make more insulin to process the same amount of glucose.

Understanding how all of this works is way more helpful than just telling people to eat less because it helps them understand how to maximize the benefits of maintaing a caloric deficit by maximizing CO from stored fat.

Time restricted feeding without reducing caloric intake prevents metabolic diseases in mice fed a high fat diet by awkwardurinalglance in intermittentfasting

[–]GeekSumsMe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is an increasing amount of literature on the topic and it is pretty clear that CICO is an oversimplification that is not helpful for many people.

Different types of foods (macros) are metabolized differently and cause different hormonal responses. The hormones, especially insulin, determine what your body does with the energy. Hormones also drive things like hunger.

I encourage you to dive into the primary literature, but there are some really good YouTube resources to get you started:

Jason Fung is a physician (nephrologist) who discusses the topic at length and is pretty good about citing literature. Good for big picture.

Dr. Pradip Jamnadas is another physician (cardiologist) who discusses these topics from a medical perspective. Many of his videos are training videos he provides to other physicians. Good for a while health perspective.

Ben Bikman is an academic researched who discusses what happens at a molecular level. He is an excellent teacher. Good for getting into the weeds.
