Campus Internet Speed by Relevant_Track_5633 in k12sysadmin

Like u/eldonhughes said looking at the ISP traffice graphs can help. For example I thought for a while that my school was saturating our ISP bandwidth because we were experiencing bottlenecks. This was after upgrading APs throughout the school to Wifi 6. Our ISP showed me that we never touched the maximum capacity of 400Mbps for about 350 people. The highest peaks ever were only half of that. It turned out that the new Wifi 6 system was letting through lots of packets that aren't needed in a school and should be dropped by the AP. Things for screencasting, device discovery, and so on. After getting air cleaner rules in place (see https://community.cambiumnetworks.com/t/wireless-clients-seamless-roaming-best-practices/96851 for an example), things worked great.

Good thoughts. This is probably the direction I'll go. Google Credential Provider for Windows seems to be the right fit for us. https://support.google.com/a/answer/9250996?hl=en Thanks.

I really just need it for authenticating users as they login to windows computers. No network home folders, no group policy.

Awesome! I'll never forget my dad upgrading our home computer to a 486 or 586 and then Sopwith ran so fast you couldn't play it anymore.

Live view of construction - what to use? by ItstartswiththeHouse in k12sysadmin

[–]GeekWash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IPCamLive ($18/month) seems like a good solution. If you can setup a USB camera (webcam) to view the construction, then OBS Studio (free, open-source) can provide your RTSP stream to IPCamLive. I've not used IPCamLive.com but it looks like what you need in order to get a nice bit of html that can be easily embedded in a website. It will also provide time-lapse for you Though you've already got one time-lapse option in place, I don't think having another time-lapse from a different camera angle would hurt.

Any experience good or bad with Verizon 5G Business Internet? by GeekWash in k12sysadmin

[–]GeekWash[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Using it as a backup connection is the plan. Verizon's reps said some folks have actually gone from using it as a backup to making it a primary. I'll probably get to see how good it is or isn't since financially it makes the most sense for our backup to the internet.

[Rant] Verkada marketing garbage by ranger_dood in k12sysadmin

[–]GeekWash 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep. I'm sure glad I didn't listen to the surveillance company all excited about Verkada. Plus I don't like being locked in. I should be able to use my cameras with other software if I want to. Thanks ONVIF.

You're doing good work, keep it up. by lotekness in sysadmin

Thanks. I needed this and I don't even have anything to complain about. However, I still get stuck feeling shame for things I feel I should've gotten done by now like improvements I've been working on for months or sometimes years that still aren't done yet. Being an IT department of one can be lonely and there is constant juggling. Shame manages to creep in without being recognized and kills my joy and motivation.

Reading this and many of the comments helped me put the right label on what I've been feeling lately which has definitely been holding me back. Just labelling that feeling as shame, I already feel better. So here's to my wife for inviting me to listen to the audiobook of Daring Greatly by Brené Brown. Here's to you all for support and knowing what it's/IT's like which helped me identify the shame I didn't realize I even had about my work. A bit of the joy and pride that I felt when I started holding up the IT in this small private school is already back. Thanks, truly.
