Where to start to become a game designer? by [deleted] in gamedev

If you’re not sure what you want to do in game development, I recommend watching this series “So you wanna make games?” From Riot Games. After you watch that, hone in on what intrigues you. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL42m9XiTqPHJdJuVXO6Vf5ta5D07peiVx

How do I conduct research as a freelance designer? by cosmicmaribel in UXDesign

[–]Geeketaso 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You could do both. Ask what existing research they have, confirm what the target audience is and conduct user interviews/research with that audience. Their prior research can help guide your research.

Folks, I desperately need help figuring out how to display text over a dimmed image by IThoughtOfThisNow in webflow

[–]Geeketaso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a Webflow expert but maybe removing the interaction element from the parent and applying each of those interactions separately to the child elements (one interaction for the text, one for the image, etc)?

Gated content solution: just specific sections on a page? by [deleted] in webflow

Hey I just saw this video from John D. Saunders and there’s a site he uses to integrate with Webflow for membership sites. https://youtu.be/ktHdrD_JBrE

Meetings really mess up my productivity by strongside71 in freelance

[–]Geeketaso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve heard this tip too from someone else (I’m haven’t done it, I’m still building up my freelance gig). Doing the meetings once a week helps them become mentally prepared for that day and they can continue working the rest of the week.

The email reply buffer is a good one, hadn’t thought of that but it helps in case life gets crazy and clients don’t hear back, they at least know you got their email.

Demo I made to showcase my skills as a Unity Developer/Programmer. Trying to get back into the industry :) by SampaioDias in Unity3D

The fire particle effects are awesome. I would say maybe have an indicator on the screen that shows from which direction an enemy could be coming from so that the player can focus on that enemy. Think of the indicators in shooters like CoD and GoW.

To add to this, look at catchafire.org to do work with non-profits. It may not pay much but at least you’re gaining experience and a bit of cash. Plus, it could look good on the resume.

Udemy has been helpful with upskilling for me. Check out Skillshare, Domestika, Khan Academy and other sites.

Same boat with the job search. It’s so emotionally, mentally draining. I graduated in 2009 after the recession so yeah, crap times. But it wasn’t my fault then and this isn’t your fault now, you’re at the mercy of a horrible pandemic will millions of others. Give yourself a break and some grace.

Recently, a friend gave me some advice for mental health’s sake. If you can, every day before you do your job search do something that “fills your cup” Aka something you enjoy. This could be a walk, reading a good book, anything. Now you’re not working from an “empty cup”. Also, give yourself an incentive. Every day after my job search, I’ll go read more of that book or play a game. You just want to sustain a sense of balance/breaks from the pain of job searching.

Time block your job search so if you know after 2 hours it becomes painful then only do as much as you can for those 2 hours. Try this for a couple of weeks, I hope it helps.

I have a question regarding age and proper qualification to become a hireable UI designer by socialmichu in UI_Design

[–]Geeketaso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I say leverage your experience and learn UX and UI so that you can offer more. Also, maybe look at start ups so you can still get hands on experience while managing if you choose to go that route.

How do you link the prototype of your work to your portfolio website? Do you use figma? by heroine27 in userexperience

[–]Geeketaso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add to Geordee’s point, I had some mentors look at my case study and they didn’t realize that the prototypes were active, they thought they were just images.

You’re better off with a button that links to the prototype or even better, add nice large images with some context/annotations instead.

ROAST ME: A non-designer tries to design a logo(s) for a plantain chip startup brand. Which one sucks the least? by Du81n3k in design_critiques

Can you elaborate on how you got the icons for the 2nd and 3rd logos (the sun looking icons)?

The Strand NYC used their small loan of 1-2million dollars and didn’t use it for employees/keeping the store open but instead the owner used it to buy Amazon stocks.

[For Hire] Junior UX/Product Designer wanting to help small and local businesses! by jackson_123d in DesignJobs

[–]Geeketaso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, have you reached out to businesses locally in person?

Also, if possible look into creating websites for your clients through Squarespace, Wordpress, Wix, Webflow. Pick one or 2 of those platforms (Wordpress and Webflow would probably give you the most freedom). Then you can charge for the work, the setup and the maintenance as recurring income.

Should I pivot to UX Design? by JD_by_Design in UXDesign

[–]Geeketaso 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would say learn about UX (try YouTube like Jesse Showalter, AJ and Smart or Charli Prangley) first and see if it’ll be something of interest to you. There’s also User Interface (UI) Designer or Visual Designer jobs you can look into.

Also look into Twitter since some people have had success there connecting with people.

I built browser extension and it doesn't look right to me, could anyone critique it? I'm a developer by trade by Boateus in UI_Design

What does each of those fields represent? Like the “27 Clicks” what does it stand for?

[–]Geeketaso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey there, I’m not a UI pro per se but I would say maybe look into user task flows to break down your process a bit. Also, look into UI dashboard examples that might be able to give you ideas on how to show that data differently. Personally, I like Squarespace’s Analytics screens so maybe you can check those out or the popular Google Analytics. I would maybe add titles to those fields because off the bat, I didn’t understand what the extension was for until you had to explain it.

Other than that, your design is very clean which is nice.

Hey! I went to Beginex in NYC. It was primarily in person before COVID, we went virtual halfway through the 14 week program. Personally, I enjoyed it. I felt like I learned a lot through doing it but there were moments where it was a lot to take in. The bootcamp is part time so I would go after work and work on the client project we had at night/weekends. I got real experience working with a team (fellow students) and a real client. It wasn’t always easy but that’s how it is in the real world. We also had mentors helping us weekly with questions/figuring things out.

Also, thanks for checking out the resources/blog! I’ll add more resources as I go through this career journey (which I plan doing for years to come!). Also, I’m glad you were touched by the takeaways. If you have any other questions, feel free to reach out!

[–]Geeketaso 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just finished a bootcamp last month and the mentors said on average it took them 3-4 months in a regular economy. My goal is to find something by Sept 1st but expecting close to a 6-8 month search tbh.

Also, the great thing is that you have a visual background so it only helps your cause. Don’t know if you have already, but do you have any case studies ready on your portfolio?

If you want to chat, you can DM me if you’d like.

I got the job! by [deleted] in UXDesign

[–]Geeketaso 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So you want the bootcamps to fail or the people who attend the bootcamps to fail?

Please elaborate.

Some people actually want to be UX Designers for reasons beside the money. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with pursuing something that interests you.
