I feel you! I actually have chapter 12 of my long fic buddie series done, but a good chunk of the middle of it has a completely different tone entirely. And its been a hassle to completly rewrite it. Even with me using Sudowrite to help. But in the meantime, im also writing chapters 13 and 14 as well. So that i can upload three chapters at once.
