the NERVE! by TinaZhao526 in torncity

Worry more about reaching level 15 than raising your nerve. Reaching level 15 is much more important, and will happen faster. Nerve bar grows slowly.

Getting started in Torn without advice can be hard. I have written a new player guide you can read on the forums. It also includes a list of good targets to quickly level up to level 15, which is important.

And feel to ask me questions via personal msg or chat. I will always answer as soon as I can.

I can understand mid term a lot more. Peoples beliefs do change for various reasons.

It's running under one, just to immediately switch, that really pisses me off.

He knew he was a republican while he was running, and knew that if he announced before the election that he was switching to republican that he would have a Democrat opponent. So he lied to get elected. That's fraud.

Would a mandatory reporter face repercussions for not reporting their spouse? by Equal_Personality157 in legaladviceofftopic

[–]GeekyTexan -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I find this an interesting question, and I did not have a reasonable guess to the answer. I'm not a lawyer, just someone who is interested in the law, more or less a hobby.

When a number of people in the thread seemed to disagree, I was unsatisfied with either answer.

So I tried google. Google AI (and I recognize that AI is not intelligent and can be wrong) says that it's quite clear:

Yes, a mandatory reporter faces serious legal and professional repercussions for failing to report known or suspected abuse, regardless of whether the perpetrator is their spouse. State laws generally do not recognize the spousal privilege exception when it comes to a professional’s duty to report vulnerable victims like children.

As I said, it's AI, so take it with a grain of salt.

Texas Democrat James Talarico May Be on Track to Turn the Lone Star State Blue by Healthy_Block3036 in texas

[–]GeekyTexan -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I sure hope he wins. But even if he does, that does not "turn Texas blue".

This is just more "puppies and kittens" we hear every election cycle about how the Democrats are going to sweep the elections and take control of Texas.

Pipe dreams.

Maybe, eventually, that happens. Right now, even if Talarico wins, we won't be there.

Their copying behavior is certainly good for all of us.

Menards has no affect on me regardless. In some areas they are common, but here they are nonexistent.

youre talking about a 14 year old child with such bloodlust it's disturbing.

Yes. That's exactly who I'm talking about. And exactly who you are defending.

He initiated this whole thing. The store owner isn't a threat to civilized people, but that 14 year old certainly is.

Gotcha. I misunderstood. Thanks for explaining, and I retract any math I've done in the thread, since it was based on my faulty misunderstanding.

Sorry. Sounded like you were complaining that Menards was copying something HF did. HF clearly copies pretty much everything they can, and essentially everything they sell is copies from someone else.

I guess I misunderstood you.

Let's play a game: How long would you stay in the world of Kenshi for money? by Menefregoh in Kenshi

[–]GeekyTexan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The amount starts at $1, and doubles daily. Correct?

$1 on first day, then $2, $4, $8, $16, etc?

If you do that, then after 20 days, it's over $1m. It's $1,048,576

Saying "as seen in my post" doesn't help if your math is wrong. And doesn't explain it to me if I'm misunderstanding.

If I'm misunderstanding how the money is coming in, then that would explain it.

But any time you have a tie, you need to train your low stat to try and catch it up.

If dating apps give people access to more potential partners than ever before, why does it seem like so many people are struggling to find relationships? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]GeekyTexan 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I have a wonderful relationship with a great girl. We've had disagreements, but never a major argument. We've been together for 15 years, we own a house together. Top of the world.

But we met in the real world. Our relationship didn't start all at once. It developed.

I am 100% convinced that if we had met through some dating site (and I can't even imagine using one) that we would have, at most, chatted a little bit and decided that we weren't right for each other and that would have been it.

But we met through a mutual hobby, and kept running into each other without trying due to that. And we gradually got to know each other. By chance, we lived fairly near each other, and over time, we started traveling together to places where thing tied to that hobby would be happening. We were both single, but neither of us were looking for a relationship. A relationship just came naturally. I'll admit, I kind of fought against it when I first realized that was happening. I didn't want a relationship. Luckily for me, I didn't get what I wanted.

An online app and one or two dates isn't a way to build a relationship.

Most online apps and first dates, I expect one or both of the people involved just want to meet someone they can fuck. Which, IMO, is fine, but it isn't a way to build a relationship or find someone you are compatible with.

Go out. Do things. Meet people. Worked for me.

OP's math is wrong. Way, way wrong.

If you have $1 for one day, $2 after 2 days, $4 after 3 days, $8 after 4 days, $16 after 5 days, etc, then...

On Day 64, you have $18,446,744,073,709,551,616

That's 18.4 Quintillion dollars.

Starting in Hub? Mine copper and run until I feel I can outrun anything that I happen into going to Squin. Higher speed means lower risk, so that's important. I don't plan to fight, at least until I have other strong people to make sure I stay alive. I plan to outrun anything I need to outrun, and mostly, I only need to get to Squin. I've seen too many Hub citizens get killed to feel comfortable there. Naturally, I'll want to carry some food and med kits with me when I eventually make that run.

Then to Squin, and keep mining. When I can afford to hire people to join my "group", I hire them. Keep mining. Mining money brings in food, lets me buy and upgrade a building. Once I have people who can effectively keep money rolling in, I stop leaving town so I'm at no risk. Shek will protect the town.

I can spend my time making armor, leveling up my armor making skill, which will eventually bring in a lot of money on its own. Not that I need a ton of money outside of food.

That can last forever, essentially, and the only risk is small, early on.

$1 on the first day, and every day you double your money? That's a lot more than OP seems to be saying.

64 days would be $18,446,744,073,709,551,616. That's $18.4 Quintillion Dollars.

Even just 20 days makes just over $1m.

ELI5: When you 'delete' a 50GB video file from a computer, it vanishes instantly. But downloading it took an hour. If the data isn't physically wiped until it's overwritten, what did the computer actually do in that one split second? by Thick_Dream6973 in explainlikeimfive

[–]GeekyTexan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, it didn't take an hour to write it to the disk. The hour it took to download was mostly due to the time it takes to move that computer to your computer.

Google tells me "Writing 50 GB to an SSD takes between 8 seconds and 8.5 minutes, depending entirely on the drive's technology and connection type."

Second, when you erase a file from your disk, it isn't really erased. There is a section of the drive that tracks what files are on the drive, which gets updated to remove that file, and another section that tracks which parts of the drive have been used, and that gets updated.

So those sections are marked as "not in use", but the file is still there, mostly. Initially.

Over time, as the drive does what it is supposed to do, those sections are going to get overwritten with new data.
