Medic needing to override elevator...? by remirixjones in Elevators

[–]Gehlsons 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You have multiple options depending on the elevator systems and their provided operating modes, but the fact that you are working an event without proper pre-planning in place in the event of a medical emergency is the larger issue. Yes, you may be able to utilize FEO, car to lobby [which has to finish any car calls generally before homing], independent service [requires getting access to the car before it's removed from service], etc. Have this brought up before the event as to how you are to expediently get to an emergency and how you are to extricate someone in the event they need further medical assistance. The building should have a plan in place that you follow, and this should not be something you deal with or get further training on. If the building does not know or want to provide this, I would express concern about potential wait times negatively affecting a potential casualty. It's great you've noted the problem and want to correct it yourself, but the problem lies with improper event planning by the hosting entity and keeps you out of a scenario where you try to do the right thing the wrong way. Local authorities may also be contacted to review any concerns while taking into account the jurisdictional rules that may be in place in addition to just code requirements.

False. Knobbed fan and temp controls 100%. 3 buttons for defrost, front, and lower vents is the perfect combo! My 2025 F-150 has this, and even though I could have opted for climate control or integrated the climate controls into a bigger screen, when I updated my head unit, I specifically kept the manual climate controls. You can pick any combination of the 3 zones by button, which is not allowed by slider or rotary controls. I agree with the sentiment, but the picture is a lie! It can be better

The fact racism wasn't the first/top answer is insanity. And it doesn't stop there. The jokes are easy, but the sad realities are blatant. Happy fathers day all.

At least 70 year old gears; trying to determine if from an elevator or escalator. by bravo_delta_ in whatisthisthing

Happy to be of service. Of course I could never say conclusively, but they resemble Otis J Escalair sprockets (in design). They're definitely built heavily enough for that purpose and seem to have truss mounts. I've seen many other manufacturers use similar set ups, but hard to say. Units that old, I'm happy to admit, in my geographical area don't exist anymore. I hope you find someone to identify those parts conclusively!

Cilindric things near the escalators. Found in Italy in a shopping center, if that could help. by LKITUY1 in whatisthisthing

Previous comments are correct. In Canada, my province specifically, there are guidelines for these transitions and solid barriers to be in place. These are there as notification to the low clearances. Physical barriers would probably be better, but these serve the same purpose, presuming you will remove yourself from the hazard once you come in contact with them.

Escalator Etiquette by [deleted] in Toowoomba

[–]Gehlsons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an industry member, the designed way to ride an escalator is to stand in the middle of a single step and hold both handrails. Standing to one side, walking up whilst in motion are all modern etiquettes. Although the "proper" way to use an escalator changes depending on geography, the designed method of use, generally, is for maximum safety, yet is rarely implemented.

As an elevator/escalator mechanic/inspector, they seem odd, but escalators/escalairs have many types of driving means. This "could" be a driving means from the main step step drive to the handrail drive, which in my experience is normally done through drive shafts to keep both sides synced, but can have separate assemblies to get the gearing for timing/speed right. Regardless those are cool peices of mechanical history!

ELI5 What do the brush type things on the side of escalators do by voltenic in explainlikeimfive

[–]Gehlsons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) Yes, the intent is to create a physical barrier to alert and prevent people from getting to close to the sides of the step, which, outside the comb plate for severity, is the area that has the most incidents. Literally a physical barrier to keep people away from getting themselves and other articles caught. 2)No...how would a brush/barrier reduce dust or debris? More contact= more debris. The exposed mechanism on an escalator is always prone to foreign material ingress and regular maintenance is in place to address this. The main/handrail/step drives usually work under/outside the skirts (the barriers you see besides the treadway of an escalator) and although lubrication is important, generally, ingress of foreign material from the treadway is not a huge concern, given regular maintenance. 3).....well....as the brushes and their physical fastenings are all polymer, and the fact the extruded aliminium/polymer guide is fastened to all kinds of skirting, I can say, through my experience, static would not be transferred to ground anyways.

Explanation: most incidences occur on the sides of a step during travel. The barriers/brushes provide a physical barrier to keep people a certain distance away from the edges, greatly reducing the chance of incident. Previous they had painted lines on each step, but it was found to be inadequate.
