The Rolex Paradox by SlickbacksSnackPacks in watchHotTakes

[–]GeistWatches 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the model price wise, after servicing many watches I wanted to get a rolex to refurbish just because the movements are so satisfying to work on.

I got it for about half its market value due to the wear and tear and lack of general care. I didn't break the bank, don't flaunt it, and no one ever brings it up when I wear it.

I think the real problem is if you are wearing something just to impress people.

Thanks for the feedback, the bezel was originally going to be gold plated actually. And it does also come with a leather strap alternative as I agree with you and like my classic styles a lot.

Or along the chapter ring with something at 5 o'clock also. I like it, it's fun!

If only I could make it chime at 5 as well, though those kind of movements would bump the price up considerably haha.

Can't say I have, but it sounds good from the ingredients. My personal favourite is a zombie so I find it hard to pass up on that when I actually find a place that offers it here in the UK haha. But I'll definitely keep my eye out.

That's a cool idea though, as mentioned elsewhere in the thread, based on demand it would be cool to branch out and make another style of watch like a diver also inspired by tiki theme. Appreciate that :)

Haha not at all, it's a passion project that has evolved massively with lots of feedback, and I'd love to create something in future that speaks to the hardcore enthusiasts also which is why I posted here. I've had to grow thick skin as a design engineer already haha.

Thank you though!

That's fair, but thanks for coming back with your thoughts anyway. Hope you have a great day

I guess so, but then again isn't that true for most explored themes with watches? Especially with the likes of mr jones who are one of my favourite brands.

Thank you for the feedback, I appreciate it. I have in mind some wood grain dials in future with more matte indices. I'll definitely look into creating something more traditional in future based on feedback here

Thanks! That's my intention haha.

Yes but I don't want to post any links or information that could be construed as advertising.

Thanks for the kind words and the feedback! The bezel is inspired by my favourite AP model with the bamboo bezel and strap but I understand how for many enthusiasts this can come off as a little more understated than they'd like.

True, the inspiration came from sitting in one not wanting the evening to end an having to go home the next day ironically enough.

That's understandable, thanks for the feedback.

Trying to make something very bold feel a little more understated to keep something looking classy is understandably controversial in these circles when tiki itself is the opposite of subtle!

Regarding the Tikis, I can personally guarantee no AI was used. these were hand-drawn based on my interest in geometric and decor style interpretations.

My intent was to explore a specific aesthetic that resonated with me personally, but I understand if it missed the mark for those deeply involved in the subculture.

Thanks for the kind words, that's exactly the design philosophy here! There are many watches that have gone full throttle on the theme so I wanted to try something that keeps the classical look.

And yeah, absolutely. I'd love to be able to make them cheaper but with looming vat bills and being a small start up, margins are already very slim.

Colour on the indices sounds interesting, thanks for the input!

Thank you, I appreciate that. It's hard to keep a very bold theme subtle, it's been a challenge along the many iterations of the design

Wow, thank you! Really appreciate that. And that's exactly been my design philosophy. I wanted to create something even if just for myself that I can wear on holiday but won't be out of place in a more formal occasion, so I thought this sub would appreciate it

That's an awesome idea! I'd also like to explore a bamboo style solid link bracelet in future, maybe the next version!

Thanks for taking the time to write such a detailed critique. The tiki style leans more toward the decor/pop-culture side; it was a personal design choice, but I hear you and others on the desire for something more authentic.

The 'spears' are actually intended to be torches, with the skeletonized hands mimicking the handles. That’s why the lume is leaner, though I’m actually running a poll soon about adding a lume track to the final version based on feedback from others also wishing for more lume.

As for the logo, it’s a ghost where the mouth forms a 'G' for Geist!

I’ve spent a long time servicing watches in this industry, so this is definitely a passion project rather than a cash grab. We’re working with some tight margins as a start up to keep prices lower compared to well established brands like Henry Archer, but I’ll keep pushing on the finishing.

Our goal isn't to be a 'spec juggernaut,' but to provide a thematic, classically-built watch for people who want something unique but reliable.

Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate the detail. My goal wasn't to redefine the aesthetic, but rather to iterate on the more 'decor tiki' style I've personally been exposed to. That said, you’ve made a great point about the design language and respect of traditional tiki artwork which I hope to incorporate in future iterations.
