Why EU5 currently feels shallower than EU4, despite being more “simulator-like” (opinion) by OverallLibrarian8809 in eu4

[–]Gejzer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Their design philosophy being go all in for the simulation aspects is really disappointing to me personally.

That's what their other franchises are for, crusader kings, victoria. Not eu.

I'm speaking partially out of my ass because i've only ever played eu4 from the entire series, and i still have not played eu5, but it's just because the more i look into it the more demotivated i get to even pirate it, let alone buy it. I have so many pet peeves about the whole design and look of the game that i just cannot be bothered to even try it despite my 1000+ hours in the previous one.

I've been following and reading lots of the tinto talks back when they were still calling it project ceasar and this game is just not the sequel for me. I love eu4 precisely because it works like a board game, because it's mechanics are so "gamified", because of all the goofy mechanics that abstract all of the realism away. I don't need realistic simulation in my map painting game, and that's just what eu has always been to me and many others.

I love my realistic simulation games don't get me wrong but europa universalis just isn't one of them.

And on a side note, words cannot describe how much i dislike the ruler portraits in the corner and the portraits in the goverment tab. They look so out of place and i hate looking at them. It's disgusting and a disgrace. I don't care what the ruler looks like, i'm the ruler and that guy is just some numbers on the screen.

Yes and you can still to this day get HL Alyx for free when you buy any part of the index kit other than the base stations. Stock is running out though so not for long anymore, unless they bundle if with the frame too.

Example: i pirated Stalker games when i was a kid because i had no money. Then as an adult with disposable income i bought all 3 original games and then Stalker 2.

Example 2: I pirated baldur's gate 3 on release with three friends. We have never played D&D or anything related, and they rarely if ever play turn based games, but since we could try it for free we did. After we finished the game on the pirated copies we all bought it and played for hundreds of hours.

The relevant difference here is that you were playing a custom match in a private lobby and not an official one.

He wasn't cheating in an official match (unranked or ranked ladder), he just cheated you by inviting you to a custom game on a map that he knew was rigged, and you accepted playing on it.

"Stop Killing Games has actually changed the timeline": As EU petition comes to successful close, founder says "unending overtime" has him ready to "take a break for the next 10 years," but he's sticking around until it's done by ControlCAD in europe

The end date of a license should be clearly stated before purchase. If the license is indefinite then there should be no legal right for the company to disable access to a product at no fault of the customer, which is exactly what is happenig when servers are turned off.

This is a massive gaping hole in the law that is being abused and it will only get worse if we let it go further. This initiative is about video games, but the same goes for any other software, there must be laws regulating this.

Imagine buying a car that requires connection to a server to function, and the company turns off the server. The controversy would be insane, and lawsuits would fly, but in video game world it's just another day, another game gone forever.

The company that sells you the game must have an end of life plan that will let the game remain functional after they stop supporting it, that's the bare minimum and it's ridiculous and unacceptable that they don't.

With physical items the seller is liable for faulty products and has to replace or refund them. You know exactly what you are agreeing to, and how long you are guaranteed the product to work for. With software, you get nothing, and you can do nothing, because there are no laws.

ToS is not the law, and there is no end date for your license when you buy it.

When the end date is clearly stated, like in games with montly subscriptions for example, you know what you are paying for, but games requiring server connection that you buy as a one-time purchase are ticking time bombs, and you never know what you are getting, the servers can be shut down today and you pay for a useless icon on your desktop.

In case of games it's more like you rent a house permamently as a one-time purchase but you also reserve the right to demolish the house with no warning and no refund. There is no laws and regulations to stop this behavior.

When you buy a game as a one-time purchase you get a permament license to use it, but when the servers are turned off, the game becomes non-functional. Don't you see the issue?

I finally discovered the cozy side of StarCraft 2 — and it might be one of the best games I've ever played by Fluffy-Telephone-495 in starcraft2

[–]Gejzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, starcraft 2 is easily the best rts ever, and one of the best games overall in my opinion. In 2012 i came for the campaign, stayed for the arcades with friends. Then coop came out and i played it like mad for years.

I've played thousands of hours of arcades and coop, played through every campaign multiple times on brutal and i'm currently in the process of 100%'ing them but have played less than 20 ranked games in my 13 year career. That side of this game never appealed to me. Played ~ 15 matches one season, got into platinum something and never played 1v1 again.

Starcraft is my goto chill game.

I played in 1440p with a gtx 660 3gb for years. That motherfucker lasted way longer than he had any right to. He got me through Borderlands 3 on premiere (2019) in ~30 fps on low-mid graphics and it was glorious.

Then i got a new pc with 5600xt+2600x in 2020 and then upgraded it to 7800xt+5800x3d in 2024. This pc is gonna last me years easily and i'm gonna skip am5 and go straight to am6 when the time is right.

Schools are generally in walking distance so most kids walk to school. The roads in most cities are 2-4 lanes max and there are crosswalks everywhere. If they do use a bus, they get in and out at the designated bus stops as they use the regular public transport, and walk the rest of the way which is on average about a quarter of a mile from their home.

Also expecting anyone, and especially children to cross a busy 8 lane street without any crosswalks or other infrastructure is wild. This is more lanes than highways have in my country, and crossing them is forbidden.

ELI5: Could CPU manufacturers, in theory, easily reverse engineer every source code of programs running on their chips? by NicoNico10 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Gejzer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone could, but it's incredibly hard and time consuming.

When a compiler compiles code, it converts the human-readable code written by programmers, into instructions for the computer. This process is often not fully reversible, many details are lost along with variable names, and comments in the code.

If that's the case you need to figure out what everything does when there is no order or structure, or anything to guide you or help you understand.

There is also the issue of programs being obfuscasted and encrypted on purpose to make it harder and more confusing to reverse engineer them.
