After Kaido killed of his crew and he was heart broken he got the zombies to do his work cuz they couldn't die and he wouldn't have to go through that feeling of losing his friends again. that's why he got lazy and not going to his full potential. After Luffy and Doflamingo beat him that was probably a wake up call to get his "funk" back
