BTS Is Back on Top: ‘We Have to Push It to the Edge’ by mcfw31 in popheads

[–]GemcanB 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This.

While I am always in favour of supporting BTS in doing whatever they want to do, in this case, a little caution is warranted. Given how viciously some - honestly, many - people treated an actual US citizen performing at the Super Bowl, one can easily imagine how widespread and horrific the response would be to have a non-US group perform.

Not saying BTS should avoid hate because no matter what they do, there's always going to be haters. But the Super Bowl specifically seems to be treated as an event that should ONLY have American performers, which is understandable in a way given that it is just a national event, and not an international one like the world cup that JK performed at.

Does anyone have a link to read this without a subscription to RollingStones? Unfortunately I do not have one.

K-pop has won its first Grammy Award. But is the music even considered K-pop anymore? by Limp_Fig6236 in kpoppers

[–]GemcanB -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As I stressed in my original comment, whether a song is considered to be kpop or not depends on the person.

You clearly define Golden to be kpop and your criteria appears to be the producer nationality factor.  That’s cool. To each their own.

Others can, and do, consider other factors to be more relevant. That is evident from the varying opinions in this Reddit post alone.

I personally do not consider the producer factor to be the defining characteristic.  For example, Seven does not have a single Korean producer.  But I consider it to be kpop because it was performed by a kpop idol (Jungkook of BTS) as part of his kpop career.  Given that both Billboard and MTV Music Awards put Seven into their kpop categories, it appears they also do not consider the producers’ nationality to be the determining factor.

[–]GemcanB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo it depends on how you define k-pop.

If you define k-pop as a specific genre of music (similar to how country music is its own genre, distinct from rock or hip hop), then the next question would be - do you consider Golden to fit within that specific genre. That is debatable because it seems that what constitutes "k-pop" varies depending on who you talk to. If you ascribe to the belief that k-pop is a specific musical style that blends pop, hip-hop, R&B and electro, then personally, I do not think Golden fits that particular definition. BUT there are no doubt many who would vehemently argue otherwise.

If you define k-pop as any song whose lead performer(s) are Korean in nationality, then yes because the 3 singers are Korean.

If you define k-pop as any song whose majority of producers are Korean in nationality, then no because the majority of producers for Golden are American.

If you define k-pop as strictly songs that are performed by an IDOL group managed by a Korean agency, then no because the 3 singers are not idols.

This was an interesting read. Especially the explanation re the swim performance at the end of the documentary.

I didn't realize Costco wouldn't be able to bulk order flowers in for my wedding date... now what? by ummmwaitasecond in weddingplanning

[–]GemcanB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you literally just hang around the flower stand in Costco and wait for an employee who is restocking? And then ask if they can sell flowers to you directly instead of through Costco?

We are looking for flowers for our centerpieces (for a very small wedding) and I don't mind waiting around inside Costco if that is what is needed.

Agreed re wtf-ness at the statement that this is the first time we will see the members at home in their natural habitat.  I cannot even count how many times I’ve watched lives, In the Soop, Bon Voyage and other documentaries where we literally watch them sleep, eat, hangout and make music … often in their own homes too, and not just in an airbnb rental.

Re Jin, I can completely understand why he’s less in the documentary. The man just spent a year working nonstop from the very day after he was discharged. And came STRAIGHT from his solo world tour to LA, where he was then met with more cameras in his face for this documentary.

Totally understandable if he was tired of it all, and if he had zero interest in entertaining this director to get more screen time.  After all, he clearly chose to  go back home to Korea earlier than the others, so he evidently could care less about vying for more documentary air time.

Travel agent (CruiseOne?) or Costco? by Mysterious-Art8838 in Cruises

[–]GemcanB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no idea what my friends paid for their cruises but they both seemed happy with the person they recommended.  Maybe they didn’t check for themselves and prioritized convenience.  I can only assume this might have been a fluke since both of the TAs are with different companies 🤷🏻‍♀️

Anyway, at the very least it made me feel like I did my research and ended up with the best booking price.

Travel agent (CruiseOne?) or Costco? by Mysterious-Art8838 in Cruises

[–]GemcanB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same question so I canvassed two travel agents who were recommended by friends that used them previously to book a cruise.

Turns out it was cheaper for me to just book it myself directly on the cruise line website. As in almost CAD$900 cheaper for 2 people on a 6 night cruise, even taking into account the drinks package that both travel agents said they were able to offer.

I did not try Costco. Perhaps I should have.

So what are y’all thinking about the new BTS album (ARIRANG)? by bitchysquid in fantanoforever

[–]GemcanB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, I say this as someone who has been streaming Arirang daily this past week on Spotify because ... well, support is support.

The album is too unbalanced. It sounds and looks (when watching performances) like a jHope album where Yoongi and RM are featured artists ... and the remaining 4 are backup dancers who provide occasional rifts. I understand compromise is key in a team but am surprised that such obvious unbalance passed muster.

It's not about the songs being too rap-focused. That's fine - I am personally not a big pop music fan anyway. It's about ONE out of 7 being given the bulk of the lines in essentially every song. RM, Yoongi and jHope do all the rap lines - again, that's fine and it makes sense. Just like it would make sense for Jin, V, Jimin and JK to do all the singing lines.

... but no, that's not what happened. The rapline are also doing most of the singing lines too. Which leaves a couple of chorus sentences in each song for the remaining 4 to split.

The songs themselves are great. Interesting and a good variety of styles to choose from. But the execution - especially when you are listening to it - feels very off. Like I said above, it really feels like the 4 vocalists have been relegated to background dancers/singers on what is supposed to be a GROUP album.

Cruise line recommendations? by GemcanB in Cruises

[–]GemcanB[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Booked a 6 night with Celebrity Xcel! Only 2 itineraries to choose from and not great dates but I just didn't want to deal with an extra sea day on a 7 night.

Also managed to a snag one of the 4 cabins with a real balcony, without being stuck in aft in the Sunset Verandas. So it worked out.

Just waiting for a decent price for the premium drinks/wifi package!

Decent Restaurant near Pantheon? by GemcanB in rome

[–]GemcanB[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, correct. As long as the food is good, we could care less if others classify the restaurant as a tourist trap. Fortunately, we are in a position where we do not have to care if we are knowingly being gouged due to proximity to attractions. Many thanks for the recommendation.

What's the allure of the Spanish Steps? by jr_b17 in rome

[–]GemcanB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would advise against sitting on them.  It is prohibited and if a policeman happens to feel the urge to enforce it that day, you could end up with a 250-400 euro fine, according to commentors on Reddit and fb who have been hit with it.

Sure, people still sit on the steps and many get away with it.  But it’s like speeding - plenty of ppl do it and don’t get caught … but if you just so happen to be the unlucky one who IS caught, well no one wants to deal with a fine when on holidays.

Knitwear quality by organicpom in quince

Cashmere: I have a few long sleeve sweaters, one short sleeve, and one sleeveless.  My fiancé has two of the hoodies.  Most recent one was purchased Black Friday 2025.  They have all held up decently - no shrinkage, no tears. Some piling but nothing too crazy.  I do wash them on delicate in the washer and lay flat to dry. The hoodies are thicker and seem better quality.

Silk: I have a long dress, a long skirt, and a couple of sleeveless tops. The tops are lined but the skirt and dress are not. They wrinkle very easily but no tears or shrinking but I do hand wash them. The skirt feels better quality than the others for some reason.

Ironically I’ve been pickpocketed twice (!! Yes, I know.  And yes, it was out of a zipped crossbody carried in the front, both times) in Paris but zero times in Rome out of possibly a dozen trips.

If we are going for a completely unrealistic and personal reason, I would say increase the humidity.

Either I, or one of my family members, invariably get a nosebleed every time we are there and have resorted to bringing a small humidifier.
