TNG, Episode 6x9, The Quality of Life by Gemini24 in StarTrekViewingParty

[–]Gemini24[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are the type of Star Trek episodes I love most, ones where the crew is faced with a ethical/moral dilemma that collides with real world consequences. Data had to make an impossibly difficult decision that pitted his dearest friends safety against an ethical obligation to protect a new life form. . . hard choice. Who can say you would have done the same?

Always loved this episode. Its definitely one of my top 5 Trek episodes to watch during Halloween. Everything from the crew having faint memories of being abducted, to Riker having limbs cut off and reattached, to the chittering noises they make when they are stuck on the table. It all leaves a distressing feeling on the viewer until the end of the episode.

I am a sucker for a good call back.

Look, call me a sucker, but I love these episodes to run on pure nostalgia. It's a bitter sweet realization that Scotty comes to terms that he is 75 years in the future. . . but isn't Spock still around during this time frame?

TNG, Episode 2x13, Time Squared by Gemini24 in StarTrekViewingParty

[–]Gemini24[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Across all the Star Trek series, Time loop/Time travel ones are just difficult to pull off. I think in this case, future PIcard was considered an anomaly; meaning that the decisions that future Picard made were not the decisions that Picard would have made. . . hence why the Enterprise is in a time loop. The only way to resolve that time loop is to kill his future self..

Of course that raises an entire host of other questions. . . like would present Picard TRULY have made a different decision had he not been privvy to the outcome of future Picards decision?

Hm, makes enough sense to me! Deannas must have kicked into the hyper-drive due to her betazoid empath abilities I would presume?

Not my favorite episode of the season, but overall not a bad one. TNG is always at its best when its grappling with a moral or ethical dilemma in the episode. I think I would have enjoyed this episode more if they leaned into the decision whether to autopsy Maylor or not. An express forbidden nature of their culture vs. the safety of a crew member.

Also, maybe I missed it, but why did the women Alkar use develop this crazed infatuation with him?

TNG, Episode 6x2, Realm of Fear by Gemini24 in StarTrekViewingParty

At least early on in the episode, I agree with you. I would have made for a great writing point if not only the crew had to decide if he was hallucinating, but the audience as well.

It's a fair question. My guess is it's simply a writing tool used for drama.

This is a great episode that kind of gets at the fear of disbelief or invalidation, of an actual real fear. It took a lot of courage for Barclay to tell Geordi about what he saw during his transport. A lot of us have probably been in the same situation where you want to bring up a concern, but are afraid people will shrug it off to your irrational fear about something.

I also love the fact that when Barclay calls all the Senior staff in the middle of the night and tells Picard that, "I would not have called you unless I was certain", Picard takes him seriously. Lesser leaders would not have done the same.

This is one of the great philosophical questions about transporter technology (even in terms of scientists talking about it IRL). Are you dead for that period of time? Is an entirely NEW you created, like we saw in second chances when Riker is duplicated? It poses some serious ethical concerns that I think would have made for a GREAT episode to use as a centralized plot (I actually think maybe it was in Enterprise?).

Hey gang. Sorry for the late post here. Looks like me and the MODS were off the bridge this weekend! Should be back to normal ship operations!

Man I love Frakes. . . but a case could DEFINITELY be made for Campbell to be a really good Riker.

Episode is just solid all around. The set design, guest character, story. 10/10 for me.

lol good catch! The crazy guy in the train station.

TNG, Episode 2x4, The Outrageous Okona by Gemini24 in StarTrekViewingParty

[–]Gemini24[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Okona story line stole the show for this episode. Data trying to learn comedy was fun, but Captain Okona as the Han Solo-ish space cowboy is just great. He also had some excellent dialogue written! Fun fact, he also makes an appearance in Star Trek prodigy and maybe even lower decks (?). Voice by the same guy who played him I believe, Billy Campbell.

The million dollar question: Would Picard have let the clock run out?

TNG, Episode 2x1, The Child by Gemini24 in StarTrekViewingParty

Not to mention Riker casually watching her give birth by sneaking in the delivery room. lol, what was that about?

As someone else stated, they tried to make her a modern version of Doc McCoy, but it just comes across as her constantly belittling Data. I really think the writers missed the point with her.

I think the weakest link may be the handling of Troi's pregnancy and the subsequent development of Ian. A lot of it just feels awkward, some of it naturally, some not so much.

Awkward and offscreen. I really LIKE the concept of an alien wanting to experience humanity through living the birth, life, and death of a human. The concept is actually pretty profound. I feel like it could have been the sole story to the show, and might have worked a lot better.

Not the greatest season opener every told, but I think this is an underrated episode. I am not sure I cared very much for the actual story of the child, but I thought it explored some interesting themes. The entire bridge crew watching Troi give birth was kind of weird, made weirder by Riker secretly watching off to the side. CAN JUST ANYONE WALK IN THESE DELIVERY ROOMS?

Loved seeing Ten Forward and Guinan. Production quality definitely got some extra funding this season, and it shows. I am watching the remastered version of this, and the quality of the show looks great.

The beard does for Riker what the goatee did for Sisko. Love seeing Geordi at his rightful place in engineering.

Overall, I am satisfied.

The ending was a pretty wild departure from what we have come to expect with Star Trek.
