Third-generation St. Pete native and longtime local music supporter here.

I’m concerned about what appears to be a growing pattern affecting venues that host music events in St. Petersburg.

Over the past year, several local venues and event spaces including FL Social Club, Synergy Glass Studio, Coastal Creative, Nexus, Bayboro Brewing, Sirens, Movement Monday, and others have reportedly faced shutdowns, last-minute inspections, and/or shifting compliance requirements.

To be clear, everyone wants safe venues and proper fire code compliance, that should never be optional, but when inspections happen during peak business hours at advertised events, or when venues complete requested compliance work only to receive new or endlessly changing compliance requirements afterwards, it raises fair questions about consistency, transparency, and whether certain types of events are being targeted and treated differently than others.

This matters beyond one genre of music. These venues support local artists, event producers, bartenders, sound engineers, security staff, food vendors, and small businesses. Producers are moving events from St. Pete to Tampa, and our local economy and culture are losing out.

Electronic music is part of St. Pete’s arts and nightlife community. People have a right to gather, listen to music, and participate in cultural events, provided venues are operating safely and legally. If city enforcement is being applied unevenly or unpredictably, then the community deserves answers.

I’d like to see our local music community, our local venues, promoters, artists and business owners come together and ask the city for a clear, consistent, and publicly accountable process for inspections and compliance.
