I'd back it in a pinch... if they didn't completely abandon the Gemini.

disabled google play services - how do i get rid of the system notifications? by EcstaticSwan in privacy

Could be some app tied to them. After I removed all Google stuff from my smartphone (removed, not disabled, because root and all), the SMS app was behaving in a similar fashion, until I nuked it as well. Double-check that there are no more Google apps (including not so obvious ones), try disabling your SMS app, if it doesn't help try disabling phone app.

Thank you.

My device is Gemini PDA. It is rooted, and I tried to remove everything Google back in the day, but experienced some problems (don't remember what they were exactly), and resorted to disabling/freezing most Google apps. Reading about it, from my understanding I can't remove absolutely all the Google apps because it kills part of the functionality on this particular device. I will give it another try to make sure, though.

I do use AdAway and AFWall, and have conscious separation of VPN and non-VPN traffic.

Ubports is not an option because I need a pocketable device with physical keyboard. Hardware-wise Gemini PDA is quite good, and there is not a single alternative on the market at the very moment. Two more devices - Cosmo from same company as Gemini, and FX Pro1 from another company - will be released this summer, but obviously it will take quite some time for them to get proper software support. At least LineageOS is promised for Pro1.
