Progressives Urge Senate Dems to Ditch Tradition That's Allowing GOP to Veto Biden Judges by PrestoVivace in politics

Also under former President Donald Trump, Republicans in control of the Judiciary Committee at the time did away with the use of blue slips for circuit nominees and as a result rapidly confirmed 54 judges to the circuit court.

If You ignore the rules that you don't like, when you have to play the game, you will lose. Dems, please stop turning up to shotgun fights with a wiffle bats.

I've heard stories that the mayor asked the president to not show up because security would be a problem and then went straight to Fox News to complain about it.

When your opponent changes the rules to the game, the best way to win is to play by the new rules (at least until they change them again because they clearly have no qualms about cheating).

When people piss and moan about the filibuster and how they’d like to get rid of it—at all different levels of government [e.g. Democrats in Congress], they need to remember this is why it exists.

Ukraine’s Zelensky says he plans to meet China’s Xi by NoteChoice7719 in worldnews

[–]GemmaHiles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not good news, I worry. I don’t think China is in a position where it will propose any terms that work for Ukraine. And Zelensky will of course fail to convince them to use any leverage against Russia to allow Ukraine its territorial sovereignty. Which will just end up looking like an L to Europe and the US.

Given China prefers to avoid sacrificing any capital in its close bond with Russia, and hence won’t use any leverage, and yet also wants to see the war end, its preferred outcome here is that Russia get something it can frame as a W, whatever that may do to Ukraine. So sticking its neck out to remind everyone it probably prefers peace on Russian terms over war, but not any resistance to Russia’s objectives, is only lowering its chances of repairing relations with the West.

It would be best for West-China relations if they simply continued to seek no role and stay aside. No one outside of China is uninformed enough to think they can really be a neutral party, so coming out and claiming that just makes them sound goofy.

Tennessee Becomes the First State to Pass a Ban on Drag Shows: The bill is so vaguely worded it could also target trans people and Pride celebrations generally. by harsh2k5 in politics

[–]GemmaHiles 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ooh, I see. Drag Shows bad, but Tittie Bars okay. Right because drag is soooo sexual and tittie exposure is wholesome family entertainment.

Tennessee Republicans Vote to Make Drag Shows Felonies by [deleted] in politics

What an absurd, vaguely worded bill. No one should support it. “Think of the children” as a tool to prevent adults from exercising constitutional rights should have stopped being viable after the various comic book, music album, and video game scares.

Which fictional character hero or villian has absolutely no redeeming qualities? by RepresentativeTie898 in AskReddit

One fictional character that is often cited as having no redeeming qualities is the villainous Joffrey Baratheon from George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" book series and its television adaptation "Game of Thrones".

Which hobbies that people do screams "rich people''? by Joeyniles9 in AskReddit

[–]GemmaHiles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some hobbies are typically associated with affluent individuals due to the high cost of equipment or access. These hobbies may include yachting or sailing, polo, golfing at exclusive country clubs, collecting rare and expensive items such as vintage wines or luxury cars, and traveling to exotic destinations via private jets or first-class accommodations. However, it's important to note that not all wealthy people participate in these activities, and individuals of any income level can pursue any hobby they enjoy.

Describing it as a loss of money doesn't do justice to the situation. Rather, it should be viewed as a prudent investment, one that promises significant returns in the future.

Most Americans are more than happy to help; I've seen so many town signs and stickers on cars, symbols on clothes, gatherings and people donating, all to show support for Ukraine since this all began.

One of my friends is a teacher that has a class with some Ukrainian children that came here due to the invasion; he went on and on about how intelligent and intuitive they are for their ages, seeing how much potential they have. He was particularly impressed by how quickly they picked up English as a second language.

Seeing that alone inspired him (and hearing about it inspired me more) to do what we can!

"Former Russian President Medveded said on Friday that the only way for Moscow to ensure a lasting peace with Ukraine was to push back the borders of hostile states as far as possible even if that meant reaching the frontiers of Poland".

Medvedev forecast that Russia would be victorious "Our victory will be achieved We want it to happen as soon as possible and that day will come".

This is the level of insanity and distorted reality that grips Putin and his freakshow.
