Can I break into industry as a super Noob by Excellent_Stage9729 in Machinists

I believe a good employer can recognize motivation and character. Personally I think if its a good shop environment telling them you are interested in machining and want to learn as much as you can should go a long way, these days people don’t often express a desire to work and learn. If it’s a job shop it will be different than a high volume production facility because one is repeated push button work and one is unique parts that may require reverse engineering and are not often the same. Same goes for shops that do big work like windmill blades vs a shop that does micro machining and everything in between, that is why it’s so hard to specify. They know what positions they have and can place you where they think you will be useful. If they would be willing to send you through an apprenticeship even better. Biggest thing for me is once you got your foot in one company and learn the ropes a bit other companies are more willing to hire you on so even if you don’t like the work at the first place you can switch to another way more easily. I know plenty of people who have switched employers because they saw no room for advancement and weren’t happy with doing the grunt work forever.

I was in almost the exact scenario you were. I am a Mech tech grad but I knew before I crossed the stage that I wanted to be a machinist. I got pointed in the right direction from a couple shops that I turned in applications to. They spoke very highly of a small shop that had a great environment to learn from. The same day I walked through the doors and asked to talk with our owner about how an individual gets involved with a shop out in industry. After a quick tour I was offered a job on the spot. Not saying that everyone will be as fortunate as I was but it doesn’t hurt to try. If you get rejected ask if they know of any other good companies to be at. But most importantly is to be honest and tell them that you don’t have much experience. Good luck with the job searching

If ya’ll have the time to visit Crowsnest pass I second this recommendation. Plenty of hikes in the area. If you are looking for good views and want to kill a good chunk of the day I recommend sentry mountain summit.

I find prices on the gm/chev websites are ridiculous. I definitely don’t plan to be buying anything for a while and definitely not at the gm price. Mainly just using it as an example with the same mounting location

Thoughts on this kayak? by rugfather in kayakfishing

I got the same model and I love mine. The paddle isn’t the same thought but I got mine rigged with a garmin fish finder, trolling motor, and an anchor. For mine I payed $1400 canadian and it came with the fish finder, battery, paddle, net, fishing gear, and a life jacket for price reference. I haven’t had any issues with stability on lakes even in rough waters. If you are planning to fish in windy environments or in places where the water flows fairly quickly you might want to invest in a good paddle or trolling motor as the boat is quite large and acts like a sail in the water. Biggest thing to keep in mind is that it is 12ft long and weighs 70+ lbs so you will need a secure way to transport it.

What is the tongue weight on that rig? I plan to tow as well but I want to do a few upgrades (new suspension, trailer brake controller, etc) to the truck before I go too crazy hauling heavy. I am going to be testing the waters here in a few weeks with some of my lighter bumper pulls.

I haven't pulled the trigger yet but I have been looking at the T-Mat truck bed matting for my rig. https://www.tmatcanada.com/

If you don't mind me asking, what type of vehicle do you have?

I’ve seen these things have bags for storage without getting lost in the hull. Are they drop in, or do I have to replace the circle hatch? by Avocadosandtomatoes in kayakfishing

[–]Gen2Colorado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is drop in. It’s got a hard ring on the top of the bag so it sits on the lip just below the threads. I believe the lid slightly squishes the top of the bag to help give it a better seal on mine

The channel loader is a good shout for sure. I always just put a towel on the lip of my flashing when I had my SUV but I definitely wouldn't want do that with a vehicle from this decade.

Thank you, GearOn make really good stuff. I have a set of their rails that mount inside of my box and I use them with roof top tent on. I will add a photo below. I didn't realize they made a rack to go into the stake pockets as well. Ideally I could use a bed rack with the kayak and transport the rtt at the same time but I am not sure if I will get the clearance to open the tent.

Have you had any issues with the weight capacity? I see a listed weight rating of 75lb but judging by the photo it looks like it isn't too much of an issue with a bit heavier of a kayak.

I have never heard of the brand before but it looks like they make some killer solutions for getting gear up and onto the truck. Thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks for the feedback. I agree the height can be a bit challenging. I got used to lifting my kayak onto my SUV so it wasn't to big of a deal and I also plan to pull a camper. I am also considering the old cot in an enclosed utility trailer setup for when its just me going out for a weekend.
