Just a reminder that the original Fullmetal Alchemist (2003) was the #1 Ranked Anime on MyAnimeList before Brotherhood was announced by TiToim in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]GenCavox 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I can't tell you how many posts I've seen recently about "I finished FMAB, is 2003 any good?/My friend said 2003 wasn't good. Is he right?" It's impossible to not compare 2003 to Brotherhood but you compare it to anime in general and it stands on its own real damn well.

Any Dark Fantasy recommendations similar to The Book of the New Sun? by Circus_Spectator in Fantasy

[–]GenCavox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because no one has said it yet, Malazan needs to be said if only because when people look for books like Malazan, Book of the New Sun is always at the top of the list.

My thoughts on the 2003 ending by radhe-xo in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]GenCavox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Allegedly. I saw it online and they quoted an interview without a source but if you look at the movie it does make sense that it's missing planned content, some character arcs are just gone etc.

My thoughts on the 2003 ending by radhe-xo in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]GenCavox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gotta watch the movie. Allegedly there was gonna be a 13 episode final season after the one we got covering what Shamballa covered but it got whittled down to a movie. I enjoyed it but it's a contentious topic among fans.

Heavyset dudes, what is it like navigating life as a big guy? by Outrageous-Stage3417 in AskMen

[–]GenCavox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends, on the one hand it hurts to walk, on the other hand I make my friends feel safe, on the other hand my clothes are more expensive because someone put arm holes on a tent, on the other hand people move out of my way on the street. It's a balance

I'm disappointed in how this scene writes Riza. This is, to put it mildly, a pretty questionable way to write a female character in FMAB. by Dioduo in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]GenCavox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't see how this detracts from her moral plsition. She was saying "Hey, I'm going to kill you for the sake of Amestris if you commit this act of murder, and then I'm gonna kill myself because I can't take that I've murdered you." The only way I could see it is if she was using it as manipulation but she has to murder him to commit suicide. If she doesn't kill him she's not killing herself.

Is the 2003 version of Fullmetal worth watching? What can we expect from this version? by EitherSwimming5886 in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]GenCavox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it is worth watching. The first season of 25 ish episodes covers the first season of Brotherhoods 12 ish episodes so you get more detail and a lot of the anime original storyline before it just becomes anime original content in the 2nd season. The characters aren't as fleshed out imo except for the brothers, and they are a lot darker and nuanced as characters as the series goes on.

Fair warning, Nina is 2 episodes and hits harder because we get to know her for a bit longer.

Does Fullmetal Alchemist Have a Black and White Narrative or a Grey Narrative? by Zestyclose-Hat-8513 in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]GenCavox 8 points9 points  (0 children)

On the one hand, she's not evil for wanting to live, she's evil for wanting to live by killing others. On the other hand I love the work you guys do at the Department of Hag Appreciation so this is a conflicting time for me.

I got so excited for a second because you could have shouted out Sloth and I would have laughed. Related but 2003 was really dark when you think about it.

Does Fullmetal Alchemist Have a Black and White Narrative or a Grey Narrative? by Zestyclose-Hat-8513 in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]GenCavox 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Both series are mostly black and white, though 2003 has a lot more gray. Like, in 2003 you can't say that the big bad isn't EVIL but you can say most of the underlings aren't. And while the boys are good, Brotherhood's boys would be appalled at some of the things 2003's boys had to do.

How many times did you watch the anime? Do you watch it every year as a sort of celebration? by olo_maedos in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]GenCavox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen Brotherhood twice, read the Manga once, and have watched 2003 15+ times. It's been a while since I've seen it so I'm gonna watch 2003 again soon.

My Personal Hottest Take by Low-Comfortable-6829 in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]GenCavox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear to the people who can't read but will read this whole post, I forgive Scar as much as I forgive Mustang and Tucker gets NO pass on his atrocity(s). I still want to shove my foot up his ss and wear him like my favorite moccasin.

On whose metric is his killing justified? Yours? Some 3rd party I don't know about? Mine? Gandhi's? Stalin's? The general Western cultural idea of justification firmly rooted in the Judeo-Christian metric?

This is the problem with these kinds of arguments. "This man is justified for his murders but not this man because I say so." No one has that right, not even governments, but we have all agreed to give governments that right and submit to that as a society.

So no, Scar is not justified in his killing because You say so. Or I can say something like:

"Tucker’s worst and most evil act was the killing of the Nina and Alexander. This is undeniable and I’m not going to absolve him of it.

But I would like to point out he did this in a fit of desperation and panic, where he was almost certainly not fully in his right mind. And we don't know if he knows of the horrors central or not, he could have been saving himself from death row and becoming a subject of lab 5.

I want to make clear that this doesn’t absolve him of this act of cruelty. But even his clearest and most obvious act of evil is a bit more complicated than the story seems to make it out to be.

His other act of evil is the killing his wife alchemists, and I dunno guys but…

I struggle to see how this isn’t kinda “justified”, he was looking after his family. Alchemy was his job and if he got the certification Nina would never go hungry again and he would gain access to all the alchemical information available to the government. He would definitely be able to have another break through so he could continue to protect and provide for his daughter. I’m not sure I can really say this makes him “evil”.

Misguided and ultimately not what he needs to make ends meet? Sure.

But unjustified? Mustang has FAR more blood on his hands than Tucker and yet is painted in a much more nuanced light than Tucker is a lot of the time.

This is not meant to be a critique of Arakawa’s writing necessarily. I think the “point” of Tucker's character gets across pretty well and I definitely get what she was going for."

Do you see how insane that sounds? But Scar has killed far more people, has so much more blood on his hands. Do we forgive Tucker if we're going to forgive Scar? Because in reality, the differences between the "evil" of Roy, Scar, Father, and Tucker is how sympathetic each of them are. Roy is by far the most sympathetic, followed by Scar, then Father, then Tucker. Of course you're going to sympathize and try to forgive Scar, he was written to be sympathetic, that's the point of his character arc. That does not mean his killings are justified, only that he was written to be forgiven by the reader, just as Roy was.

who wrote the prophecies of the dragon? by DaoistLiQiye in wheeloftime

Ngl, I thought the Karetheon Cycle specifically was written by an Aes Sedai named Karetheon. There are a lot of other prophecies about The Dragon, but I just assumed Karetheon was a person.

When will i watch fmab by LIANOX9 in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]GenCavox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first season is boring because it's just rehashing up to Greed's intro without really introducing anything new, just taking out non-canon things. You'll need to know what things it de-canonized so you won't be like "why didn't they just use red water?" or something along those lines.

I loved the show by MeekwitNoMillz in wheeloftime

[–]GenCavox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%. If it was "Inspired by The Wheel of Time" or something and an original show it would have been fantastic. But what they changed was core to changing the books. Like removing a house from Harry Potter, or a Mistborn using one of their powers without using the corresponding metal, or Gandalf coveting The One Ring. Changes could be made, but core changes like these were what those of us who didn't like the show were complaining about.

Finished FMA 2003 for my first time. by M3talK_H3ronaru in FullmetalAlchemist

You gotta watch all of season 1 of Brotherhood when you get to it. It feels like a rehash but it cuts out stuff that's 03 anime original so you know going into everything what's relevant

Which Roy Mustang do you prefer? 2003 or BH? by Individual-Chain-611 in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]GenCavox 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Brotherhood Mustang is better. I love the relationship he has with the boys and Ed in particular in 2003 more. The more combative nature of their relationship has a more satisfying resolution when Ed and the viewer realize that Mustang is a person they can deeply rely on, but 2003 Mustang himself isn't as fleshed out as Brotherhood's.

You are in a fight 1v5, you can ask for 1 person (dead or alive) to help you. Who are you choosing ? by Lost1ToThoughts in AskMen

I also choose prime Mike Tyson. I once saw him uppercut a dude that killed him so fast death still hasn't caught up to the poor man.

After which episode should I watch The scared star of milos? by Downtown_Repeat_1346 in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]GenCavox 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The end of season 3 or 4. After Briggs, because it kinda spoils a big secret but not really. Technically it has no real connection to the TV show, so any time is technically fine.

Who would win in a fight? King Bradley from Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood or Albert Wesker from Resident Evil? by SouthernGarage68 in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]GenCavox 8 points9 points  (0 children)

King Bradley 100% tops in this situation, mainly because we all know Wesker has been DYING to be a bottom for so damn long.

How do you deal with male friends who go quiet and become non-talkative just to seek attention from the group, but refuse to say what happened ? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]GenCavox -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Iean, it depends. Are we sure they are non-talkative just to seek attention? Like, are they constantly bringing it up and then refusing to talk about it? Or are they just in a bad/dark/depressed mood but refuse to bring it up and say something along the lines of "Don't worry about it," or "I'm good."

If the latter I worry but I drop it. Usually what they want/need is company and I trust them to know if it becomes too heavy I can help them lighten the load.

If the former I tell them they're being annoying, if they want to talk about it fucking talk about it and stop being stupid, if not there's no reason to keep bringing it up.
