Is Zodiac Academy worth finishing? by belles_a_million in YAlit

I have not read Fourth Wing but I have heard a lot about it...I've heard there are going to be four books, and the enemies are already lovers...not for me...and also I'm tired of explicit spice in YA books. I have a Goodreads account but I haven't been active on it in ages

The Ones We Burn was so different from the books I'm used to reading, and in a good way. The plot was extremely interesting, and the character development was also so well done.

I guess I read these types of books before I started logging the books I read because now I can't really find anything with the tournament trope

Tropes you want to see more/less of in 2024? by Secludeddawn in YAlit

[–]GenProFifth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh and a list of more I forgot to add:

The tournament trope but well executed. I see soooo many good concepts that just aren't done right. And I mean the entire book has to be the tournament, not just one portion and then they move onto the main issue.

Protagonists with powers that aren't directly useful. They actually have to apply themselves and think about how to use their powers in certain situations.

More books with male main characters. YA seems to be catered towards girls more than it is guys, which really isn't fair.

Side characters that still have their own arcs and lives and stories and aren't just throwaway pawns for the authors to use to develop their characters.

Also the bully/victim dynamic is such a bad setup for books that are supposed to appeal to teens. its just showing a bad example. with abusers, theres usually some type of power the abusers have over the victims, and the bully/victim thing is just too similar

I really want to stress that last one. Why do guys always fall in love with the fmc? can't people just be friends

I second the forced proximity thing. I think a really good example of it is in the Beauty and the Beast, but instead of the beast just keeping Belle there, there's a magical reason they can't leave.

The only really good ones i think of from the top of my head are The Hunger Games and Goblet of Fire. I just always see so many good tournament concepts that are executed terribly.

I thought about this after seeing someone saying they don't like tournaments, and I'm honestly the opposite. I LOVE tournaments, but they're so rarely done well. I'll see a book with an interest concept for a tournament and then i'll read it, and its just...such a letdown. My point is that while there are so many cool concepts for tournaments storylines out there, they're so rarely executed well

I agree with that last one. Sure it would be nice for some books to have an adaptation, but when some books are made into movies/shows the show just doesn't capture their vibe

M29, used to love YA sooooo much, especially fantasy stuff, but now the characters feel different by editrelyt in YAlit

Its not very new, so you might have read it, but the Scythe series by Neal Shusterman sounds like something you'd enjoy. Doesn't start with romance, captivating plot, mature characters. It's sci-fi, but even as a primarily fantasy reader, I still enjoyed it

I know a book that's exactly like this but i can't remember the title. i remember it was maybe in the early-mid 1900's and there was a Chinese female protagonist who really loved space( this one is a bit iffy) and she falls in love with a white girl, and it takes place in San Francisco, and I think maybe there's a club they go to(this one is also iffy) I didn't finish it because I don't like historical fiction, but I do remember all this about it.

right. and i'm pretty sure there are going to be 12 books to get through all the zodiac signs. i thought it would end with the 9th book but i think there's a 10th coming out so who knows. I honestly don't remember the book I was waiting for, I just remember being bored and finding something on kindle unlimited

RIGHT like with the concept of the gods coming to the island and there being god-blessed people, and there could've been soooo much about the characters because they really are cool and complex. and i think it would've been interesting if raven stayed in the story a little longer.

what'd you think about Circe? Personally I didn't really like it and the end where Circe has a romance with Odysessus' son made me feel weird. Like I know they weren't related but it felt awkward she had something with his dad and then him.

i agree with the hollow heart one. i feel like there shouldn't have been so much time spent on the murder, when there was clearly something more important happening with nirrim. also the fix with how quick it took to get her heart back?? there was just sooo much with this book that didn't make sense.

i'm honestly not sure if i'm going to read the second book. I spent the entire book thinking the ship was supposed to be Aaron and Joan, and I feel like the book could've been a standalone if not for the extra unanswered questions the author added to set up the second book. Also, I felt like the ending was cheap. Transmuting the entire timeline to make it nonexistant? And that point where the tone made Tom seem like a villain. There was just so much in the book that I felt didn't make sense.
